So does The Artist knock out Moneyball? Or will it replace The Descendants, officially eliminating its shot at Best Picture? My guess is that we’ll see:
– The Artist
– The Descendants
– The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
– Hugo
– War Horse
But I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Moneyball over Descendants.
I liked “The Help,” but it’s hard to believe dozens of Oscar voters will put it at Number 1 on their ballots. It may well be snubbed.
I still believe that the directing category will include both David Fincher and Terrence Mallick. Mallick needs his obsessive fans and there should be some at the Academy. It’s even possible for Mallick to get into the final five with the film being snubbed in picture (with even 7 or 8 nominees). If you think about 2001, I believe Shrek, Black Hawk Down and even Memento would have been ahead of Mulholland Drive. And if you think about the next year, Almodovar got into the final five, but I believe Adaptation, Far From Heaven, About Schmidt and maybe even My Big Fat Greek Wedding got more votes for picture. The directors could easily surprise. It’s about time. The last two years we had really boring best directing categories, especially the best most boring one ever (the 2009 race). In terms of the editing category, there’s usually one film that gets snubbed here and still gets into the final five the Academy comes up with. I believe it’s going to be Drive. For now I’d say:
The Artist
Drive
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
Moneyball
And why no real buzz for TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY? I loved the editing!
Congratulations, Young Adult! Sad to say, but it looks like Theron won’t be getting an Oscar nom. How disappointing. 🙁
Sooo happy to see Young Adult!!!
I found Moneyball dull and bloated. I was dumbfounded at the use of archival footage instead of recreating moments with the actors cast. I didn’t find it had enough details for me to understand the situation (since I’m not a big baseball fan) and didn’t contain enough performing (showing me someone “thinking” isn’t acting) for me to care.
And I’m Canadian, if that makes a difference.
Not a bad list of editors.
There are a couple of omissions, however, that I think should have been included: the editor for “Beginners” and the editors for “Drive”.
I was thrilled to see “Moneyball” and “My Week With Marilyn” recognized in editing.
Well deserved nominations for these two films in this cateogry.
BP nominees:
The Artist
Hugo
The Descendants
Midnight in Paris
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Help
War Horse
Moneyball
The Tree of Life (I insist!)
For director, Spielberg will replace one of the DGA nominees, but it’s not going to be Fincher.
non-US folks, do you love “Moneyball” as much as most of the Americans? I find it’s a nice movie, Pitt really has a solid performance, the rythm is right, it has a nice superation story, but, for me, that’s not a notable movie, just a good and correct one. And I was really disappointed with Miller. I think his work in “Capote” is genius, even more if you consider that it’s his first motion picture, and I didn’t saw 50% of his capacity in “Moneyball”. Now, I don’t know if the movie didn’t meant so much too me cuz I’m not American and baseball it’s not something in my life and in my country’s life and History. Foreing guys, what about you?
I would put Moneyball and The Help above Dragon Tattoo and War Horse. But that first 8 is very likely.
War Horse is safely secured into the Best Picture race, THANK GOD:) I love that movie! I think the Best Pic rankings go:
1)The Artist
2)The Descendants(psshht i dont know why its so highly ranked)
3)Hugo
4)The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
5)War Horse
6)Midnight in Paris
7)The Help(barely holding on, can it really get enough number one votes?)
Out of Competition:
8)Moneyball(hopefully they take this one out of the race, its just not that good)
9)The Tree of Life
10)Bridesmaids
Once again, Midnight in Paris is one of the top 3 Best Picture contenders.
wow, they really like to give the TV categories short shrift, don’t they?
The calvary charge with the cutting between the yelling soldiers, to the silent riderless horses, was the best sequence of the year in film.
Kahn should win the Oscar for the amazing transitions in Tintin though.
since now we have more slots open for best picture unlike 2007 n 2008, TGWDT might get in for best picture, but for others still not predictable.
to all those people who are celebrating TGWDT nomination and think it’ll score well at oscars, let me remind you dark knight (a better film than this) was also nominated for all guilds but sadly no major nomination in oscars. then into the wild (also a better film) was nominated in all guilds but again no oscar nomination.
TGWDT has no support except nomination in guilds.
not to mention, dark knight at least had heath ledger getting nominations and winning everywhere where the film itself was kicked out, and here rooney mara only has GG nomination which also might be because they had to select ten (they separate drama n comedy).
what a shame, these are despicable nominees, war horse and moneyball for editing, it’s insane when they had options like drive and tree of life to nominate. i hope academy announces better nominees than this.
Oscar predictions for editing.
Hugo
The Artist
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Moneyball
War Horse
Hummmm, I just remember something about “Tree” editing credits: only Mark Yoshikawa is credited on the poster (pretty sure about that) and on the movie (can’t remember precisely). But Malick used other four editors through the years. Maybe ACE has a problem with that and “Tree” was not eligible?
@Jaoa
I think Tree of Life will probably get a cinematography nomination, but it is going to be hard for it to snatch major nods though.
When specific film editors are referred to as “legends” you know you are on a movie awards site…;)
RobertlowercaseA, oh yeah, “Tree” is out, but I had the hope of at least one or two nominations besides Cinematography (because there is no way it won’t be nominated there). Right now, none. It won’t happen.
@Davey,oops, you are right, I forgot about Hugo!
@Sclub and Joao
I am sorry, HP8 and the TOL are out of the race.
No “Tree of Life”. Deep sigh……
Honestly? With all this support “Girl Dragon Tatoo” and “Bridesmaids” are shoein for a nomination for Best Picture. I have no doubt.
@Peter wish a few sequels were nominated in the film categories
RobertlowercaseA–you forgot Hugo, there is no way it is missing a best picture nomination.
The failure in this category may tank the chances of The Help. It is a feel good movie for guilt ridden people, so bad it is embarrassing.
I think the ACE winner will be The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, and The Artist..
@Sasha
Yup, it looks pretty good for Bridesmaids so far, ACE nod doesn’t hurt at all.
CraigZ, you never know about the Oscar voters sometimes.
I am not saying Bridesmaids is a shoo in to get in, but it got so many major nominations from major guilds. Actors, writers, producers nominated it, and now editors, so I would not be a bit surprised if Bridesmaids shocked the hell out of a lot of people who are biased against comedies on the 24th.
It will be nice to see TGWTDT getting in again, so far it has hit every guild too. PGA, WGA, and the fucking DGA!!!, and now ACE.
I think this is my realistic prediction for best picture nominations.
The Artist
The Descendant
The Help
Money Ball
The Girl With A Dragon Tatoo
Midnight in Paris
And NGNG
Bridesmaids
Yeah, I agree, Bridesmaids is borderline though, but I would not be surprised if it got in, like I said.
yay TGWTDT!
Still afraid to celebrate yet;))) dont think it will get Bafta love ((
& Young Adult!!!!
I can’t really see bridesmaids cracking the top 7 at the moment but 8 or 9 is possible
The Descendants was the most perfectly paced movie of the year.
I realize that about Bridesmaids Robert, that’s why I listed it as ninth for the moment.
As happy as I am about “Dragon Tattoo” getting as much attention (to provide us from too much saccharine this year), but it would all feel wrong to me if the Academy snubs Rooney Mara. She IS the film, in my book!
Sorry…sort of OT:
Will the Baftas annnouce tomorrow their nominees??
Really, no Tree of Life? It was probably the most effective editing of the year (except the “I give you my son” bit).
You guys realize Bridesmaids have literally snatch nods from almost every major guild except DGA, ACS??(PGA,WGA,SAG,ACE) Wow, maybe it will become one of the best picture nominations.
Wow, maybe it will become one of the best picture nominations.
Looking pretty good, eh?
Yeah Beth, safe money says your right but I still think there is a chance for the other two.
Craig, we probably won’t have the fun of a new record for Schoonmaker or Kahn, since it looks like Bion/Hazanavicius are winning the Oscar.
*sigh*
When a film receives a Director’s Guild (DG) nomination AND an American Cinema Editors (ACE) nomination AND a Writers Guild (WG) nomination, that film has been nominated for Best Picture 105 of 117 times (89.7%) during the last 50 years (1961-2010).
The Descendants – Alexander Payne (DGA), Kevin Tent (ACE), Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (WGA)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – David Fincher (DGA), Angus Wall, Kirk Baxter (ACE), Steven Zaillian (WGA)
Hugo – Martin Scorsese (DGA), Thelma Schoonmaker (ACE), John Logan (WGA)
Midnight in Paris – Woody Allen (DGA), Alisa Lepselter (ACE), Woody Allen (WGA)
Additionally, (probably) the only reason The Artist isn’t on this list is because it was ineligible for the WGA Award. Pretty much everyone agrees that it will be nominated for Best Picture … which means that statistically, these four films (plus The Artist) have a 90% chance of being nominated for best picture:
The Artist – Michel Hazanavicus (DGA), Anne-Sophie Bion, Michel Hazanavicius (ACE), [ineligible] (WGA)
The Descendants – Alexander Payne (DGA), Kevin Tent (ACE), Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (WGA)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – David Fincher (DGA), Angus Wall, Kirk Baxter (ACE), Steven Zaillian (WGA)
Hugo – Martin Scorsese (DGA), Thelma Schoonmaker (ACE), John Logan (WGA)
Midnight in Paris – Woody Allen (DGA), Alisa Lepselter (ACE), Woody Allen (WGA)
Lots of people are saying there will likely be eight nominees for Best Picture which would leave three slots open. Now, the questions are:
1. Which films are fighting for the remaining slots)?
2. How many films will get at least 5% of the first place votes on the nomination ballot?
A formula for determining Best Picture nominees
http://www.davidhanks.com/film/formula2.html
(DGA, ACE, WGA correlations)
Me too Steve, I’m praying for some Drive love but…..alas. Sometimes naivity makes the race more bareable. Good thing for me two of my three favorites is very much in the race (Hugo and Midnight in Paris). So I don’t have to cling to hope too badly for my underdog choices.
Yes, impossible to guess, Craig. Call me naive, but I’m really hoping for some blocks of strategic voting for a couple of underdogs perceived to be out of the race.
Pitty that when they have their showdown that this isn’t exactly Kahn’s best movie though…. his work was stellar in a les than stellar movie. Though but I would have loved it to be a Scorcese masterpiece(Hugo is) vs a Spielberg masterpiece(War Horse isn’t) but oh well.
Beth, I think it is crazy that we are finally getting a Thelma Schoonmacher vs Michael Kahn showdown. Two legends with three Oscars each and the go to ACE’s of Scorcese and Spielberg, respectively. If either of them win they will be the new record holder for most Oscars by an editor.
And yes in a just world Thelma would win this one but they are both legends, the only working editor I hold in higher regard than either of those two is Petro Scalia.
Moneyball is far more deserving of an editing nom than The Descendants, but that probably won’t matter to AMPAS.
Nice to see Dragon Tattoo turning up again. Also Midnight in Paris, which was well edited. Can it sneak in for the Oscar editing nom?
In a just world, Thelma should win this.
Yeah Steve but it is really hard to guess which film will get 1st place votes and which ones will not. We don’t know exactly how the Academy thinks so we just kind of have to go by the precursers for now.
We’re forgetting the passion-factor of preferential voting. I doubt there will be more than 6 nominees, if that comes into play, and some perceived leaders could be left out in the cold if they only manage to place 3rd or 4th on most ballots.
Sasha, I think War Horses chances of being nominated are dependant on how many nominees there are. If there are less than 8 it may not. It there is 8 or more it probably will.
Unless they decide that they like War Horse more than Moneyball. I see the ranking as this (the rankings of numbers 2-4 don’t really matter. They are all in.)
1. The Artist
2. Hugo
3. The Descendants
4. Midnight in Paris
5. The Help
6. Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
7. Moneyball
8. War Horse
9. Bridesmaids
10. Who knows?(between Tree of Life, Tinker Tailer, Ides of March, My Week With Marylin, Drive. Probably not gonna be this many nominees so whatever)
4 Mi
Hmm…I think The Descendants could be overlooked for editing when the Oscar nominations are announced.
Definitely agree with you Sasha that War Horse’s nomination here pretty much assures it’s very much still in the race. Dragon Tattoo now has everything it needs to seal a Best Picture nomination. The question becomes…will the Academy bite? The Artist will most surely replace one of the nominees in the Drama category here on Oscar morning, probably Moneyball if I had to guess. This would leave me to prognosticate the following nominees for Best Film Editing
The Artist
The Descendants
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Hugo
War Horse
Moneyball could obviously still be one of the five. It depends on how much they loved the film and if they really wanna push the Brad Pitt Best Actor win this year. As for The Help, the lack of an Eddie nomination obviously doesn’t mean it’s dead in the water. The strength of that film anyway is its performances. However, the lack of an Editing nomination on Oscar morning will make it very difficult for The Help to win Best Picture.
“I think Drive, Take Shelter, Tree of Life would have all been good choices.”
Absolutely. I was going to mention Drive and Tree of Life, but didn’t want to start anything (you are braver than I, obviously)
Sasha, I haven’t seen MWWM, but I’m willing to bet they added a couple of muscal numbers from the Monroe Olivier flick just to be considered in the seperate category.
Sasha, I haven’t seen MWWM, but I’m willing to bet they added a couple of muscal numbers from the Monroe Olivier flick just to be considered in the seperate category.
Yeah that’s true enough I guess. You could buy it as a musical perhaps. The Artist too.
Boo War Horse! I would have agreed with this nom had Kahn clicked ‘Delete file’. (However…)
Would have liked to see Contagion, Warrior, or Martha Marcy there instead.
Would have liked to see Contagion, Warrior, or Martha Marcy there instead.
They are decidedly mainstream this year, it’s true…. I think Drive, Take Shelter, Tree of Life would have all been good choices. Rise of the Planet of the Apes too….
Go Thelma!!!
Congratulations on the two most deserving nods to the greatest film editor of all times – Michael Kahn! Total respect!
The Help would be a shoo-in if those maids had lived in LA instead of the South.
The Help doesn’t need an editing nod, not here nor from the Academy. Its Best Picture chances are secure, provided that there are at least six nominees. It could make it in with five, too. Indeed, it could even sneak a Best Editing Oscar nod. The editing branch have made some shite choices recently – Precious’ nomination, and leaving Inception off >:(
I disagree with you, though, Tero. I think it could yet win Best Picture. It’d be one hell of a shock, but I think it still has a chance.
Moneyball hangs in there and Dragon Tattoo remains a force with the guilds. Two of the four best-edited films this year, IMO.
Only The Artist is a shoo-in.
Yay – Warhorse!
Yay – Warhorse!
I think this is a sign that it’s probably in for Best Pic even without DGA.
Of course The Help is in for Best Picture.
It will probably be a 8-film field this year and the editing category should be the dramatic nominees here with the exception of The Descendants and the inclusion of The Help.
The Help could get in without the Editing nom. It’s expected. Actors would push it through. Of course, its chances of winning are zero.
That hilarious comedy My Week with Marilyn! When The Descendants is actually funnier.
That hilarious comedy My Week with Marilyn! When The Descendants is actually funnier.
Good lord, how did the Weinstein co. ever get away with THAT.
So a field of 8 for Best Picture this year with all the Dramatic nominees here (Moneyball, Dragon Tattoo, Hugo, Descendants and War Horse) plus Bridesmaids, Midnight in Paris and The Artist? Where does that leave The Help?
Go TGWTDT!!!
