@obamawins oh i think its you that will be disappointed and i’ll be there to say “i told u so!!” but we shall see non the less
Yes! I am so thrilled for Lubezki! Such a deserving win.
Jim lovell, ron howard, james cameron, sigourney weaver or george lucas should present best picture.
Such an awesome win:) the cinematography in gravity was breathtaking!
Matt, not to be a Debbie Downer but I thought he prepared speeches for Children of Men and The Tree of Life. I’m sure everybody also thought Roger Deakins prepared speeches every time he went to bat too. Everybody, myself included, thought “Chivo won’t lose for CoM.” Then “He won’t lose for ToL.” I’m just sitting back, it ain’t over ’til it’s over.
I hope Chivo is preparing his Oscar speech.
“wasn’t it just all CGI anyway ?” kind of BS
Ugh, I hate it when people try to write off the cinematography winner by writing that nonsense. Either way, congratulations to Gravity on its well-deserved win.
ASC is a great honor for Lubezki, but it isn’t a precursor.
The award has more cred, IMO, because ASC has kept some independence from the Oscar campaign. Good for them and good for their winners and nominees.
Love the honor for Eduardo Serra. Famed for Girl with the Pearl Earring, but my fave of his is Intimate Strangers.
@joe, regarding your documentary feature winner, you’re like 19,980 feet off
Gravity deserves, Gravity wins. I respect the American Society of Cinematographers very much and I’m happy they gave their recognition to such a groundbreaking breathtaking achievement in cinematography.
I think all this Gravity success could be shockingly misleading. Sure, it is the frontrunner in Best Director, sure it wins a bunch of tech guild awards that will probably translate into a bunch of tech Oscar awards
BUT
we should NEVER forget that in order to win Best Picture it would need WIDE support that includes winning over the actors and writers. There IS a reason BP usually goes to script-heavy films with big ensembles…because actors and writers dominate the Academy…and Gravity may not appeal to either group all that much.
P.S. Gravity was probably my favorite film in 2013. That doesn’t mean I think it was the best (to me that was 12 Years a Slave) nor that I could ignore the logic behind my theory above.
Alan, you will be very disappointed next month.
I will be very glad to see Lubezki finally a long overdue Academy Award on Oscar night. Guy should have at least two on his shelf already.
Gravity is rolling all the way to march 2nd
It would be wonderful if the supremely brilliant Emmanuel Lubezki FINALLY won his first Oscar. This was his THIRD (!) ASC victory and however people will try to downplay his contribution to Gravity (“wasn’t it just all CGI anyway ?” kind of BS) it is high time the Academy made him an Oscar winner. This is his sixth nomination.
I think Gravity will probably win ACE (Drama), although 12 Years a Slave should be close behind…and I can’t shake the feeling that if there was any justice, Thelma Shoonmaker’s outstanding work should the very least won the ACE (Comedy) if the Academy was fool enough NOT to even nominate her…but I guess that will go to American Hustle. Damn.
Anyone else noticed Gravity is winning everything even when others were predicting otherwise? While Gravity’s cinematography oscar was a lock, everybody kept saying that ACE will go for some traditional fare. Gravity is going to sweep come oscar night!
AH, on the other hand, is not able to even win awards for which it was heavily favored like the WGA!
Gravity 8 or 9 oscars
12 years a slave – 2 wins
Dallas – 2 wins
Blue Jasmine – 1 win
Her 1 win
AH 0!
My winning predictions

Pic to win

Sound editing: all is lost and the hobbit desolation of smaug had better sound editing than gravity or captain phillips
Visual effects: gravity potential spoiler: star trek into dsrkness or the desolation of smaug
Original score: steven price for gravity
Original song: let it go from frozen

I’m sensing that Gravity will win ACE but lose the editing Oscar to Captain Phillips (with Gravity still taking both BP and BD).
also, as an aside, I’m glad you finally corrected the spelling error in the Chinatown quotation
i must say, Drunk History was an inspired choice
Gravity is surely winning best picture. Ah will walk home empty handed. Her and 12 years of a slave is winning scrernplay with a possible upset of captain phillips. Im predicting another tie in sound editing. The work on all is lost and the hobbit: desolation of smaug was some of the best sound editing all year.
ADG is Feb 8. Gravity will likely win there. 12 Yrs is competing in a separate drama category and will have a tough time beating The Great Gatsby.
If GRAVITY wins the ACE it will be a clean sweep at the Oscars. If 12 Years wins it, there’s still a race.
There are two categories for ACE, Comedy and Drama. Gravity and 12 Yrs are competing in drama. AH and Wolf are among the comedy nominees.
ACE will be awarded on Feb 15
When will the ACE be handed out?
So Lubezki has now won 3 ASC awards and 0 Oscars so far. Hopefully the Academy can change that.
I agree and hope you’re right, Marshall.
If..if Gravity wins ACE, then are we potentially looking at a 9 Oscar haul, 10 if Bullock becomes the beneficiary of the Blanchett ugliness?
ACE going to CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, all downhill from there.
Could very well happen, but Rouse has won before and I’m thinking that it’s time that the long-take editing of Cuaron finally gets recognized.
This is GRAVITY peaking right here. ACE going to CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, all downhill from there.
With his 3 career ASC wins, Chivo Lubezki is now only 2nd all-time behind two other legends, Roger Deakins and Conrad L. Hall. Well-deserved, very significant win for Lubezki and Gravity, who have this category pretty much in the bag now (can’t get higher than 96%, which is what AD’s Statsgasm model was predicting *before* today lol)
Go México!
It’s over! GRAVITY will take BP and BD. Congrats!
yesssssslubezki!!!
Wow. Incredibly happy for Emmanuel Lubezki and GRAVITY. This award coming from such a hard-ass traditionalist institution like ASC. They saw through the noise of “real cinematography” talk.
