That Steve Martin speech is the best that I have seen in a long time. Thank you for posting these.
Steve Martin and Angela Lansbury have Oscars.
Now, if we can get the Monty Python to be honored, also, I can die a happy man on that aspect. Erase that, give FRANK OZ an Oscar, too.
Honorary Awards are actually the most important. Competitive Oscars are product of the “flavor of the week”, as time proves constantly. To earn a Lifetime Achievement… you have to earn it, consistently, through decades of hard work. I really LOVE they went with Martin and Lansbury.
Steve Martin seems like a true class act. I also love Martin Short cutting through the bullshit with his hilarious speech (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfIwHdOxfaY),
I sort of like that the ceremony has become its own more intimate and relaxed event. If this were televised, the honorees would be rushed, there would be only one, we wouldn’t get the lovely introductions. Let’s face it, none of these speeches would’ve survived intact if this was part of the ceremony in February.
Angelina Jolie and Angela Lansbury gave very moving speeches. Wow, what dynamite television this would’ve made. It’s a shame many people won’t see these moments and have no idea what the Governor’s Awards are. And instead we’ll see a thanklessly mismanaged telecast with loads of fluff, theatrical numbers, and younger stars, none of which will bring the younger demographic ABC and the Academy keep trying to target.
Angelia Jolie is a fantastic actress, and is showing real promise as a filmmaker now. And anyone doubting Angela Lansbury’s acting talent, go watch The Manchurian Candidate, a stunning performance, utterly ridiculous it didn’t win her an Oscar 50 years ago.
Jolie is stunning. She is a fantastic actress – I wish she would act in more films but that is not her main priority anymore. And my god, what a speech. So sincere.

NEVER ! 🙂 ‘Friends’ helped me through high-school. I think we can appreciate both for who they are.

Not MANY I know who also saw at least one movie from this list : George Wallace, Gia, Girl Interrupted, A Mighty Heart, Changeling, Salt. Critics and audiences were divided or less than impressed with a few of those films but Jolie’s individual work always received praise…also an Oscar, 3 Golden Globes, 2 SAG Awards and 2 Emmy nominations
This is irrelevant to her speech, but my GOD is she stunning.
this proves how powerfull in the industry she is, despite that she turned down roles like gravity, silver lining playbook, the conseulor (thank god), lucy(luc besson film) … she is an admirable person and i wish to see her in more movies ,
she hires a new agency for her acting, so maybe she is coming back to work, at least one movie, for year hopefully…
I’ve always admired her as an actress, whether in Oscar-worthy work in A Mighty Heart and Changeling or in mainstream fare like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Salt. Her humanitarian efforts are yet another reason to love her, as a talent and human being. I wish she were in more movies, but at least we have Maleficent coming up as well as that directorial effort next year.
Are you guys throwing our Jen under the bus?
I think many question AJ’s ‘raw acting talent’.
I remember seeing Gia on HBO 15 years ago thinking (in that order) 1. most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen 2. she will be a huge movie star 3. the performance is so phenomenal it is a shame it doesn’t qualify for the Oscar.
Couldn’t agree more. Jolie is a real treasure of the acting community. She started as the wild child, doing some really risky and awesome work while being a controversial figure. And we got to watch her grow up into what she has become today. She doesn’t get enough respect as an actress (check out Gia, George Wallace, girl interrupted, mighty heart, changeling, playing by heart – to see the brilliance) but no one can deny that she is now in the business for the right reasons. And she puts her money and her time where her mouth is. I only wish 10% of the acting community would put 5% of the commitment into the world as Jolie does.
Bravo to her speech and to her deeds. So proud to be a fan.
I don’t think Angelina Jolie’s raw acting talent or her devotion to her craft could have ever been questioned but I must say I am equally (or even more) impressed with her evolution from infamous eccentric to this audreyhepburnesque, poised, elegant movie star. That personal evolution, her unique screen presence and her outstanding humanitarian efforts make her one of the most fascinating women of our time. There I said it.
Why don’t they televise this? It’s a shame that such a great part of the Oscars has become so private- it would be great to see it at least on Sundance or IFC etc.
