Romeo and Juliet trailer.
If these ‘back to the camera’ shots were chosen for how they give an audience the same grand vista seen by the person who’s facing the same direction we are, then this is one of my all time favorite reveals.
(I agree on the Last Emperor shot, Ryan – should be top of the list).
These are all grand and impressive, but my favorite shot from 2011, also from the back, shows something completely the opposite. I love THIS ONE
Pretty, but so geeky. Like, Skyline… srsly, Skyline?
One of my faves from 2012 would qualify too:
It’s better in context, in motion. It’s from The Master.
Good one, Paddy! Double your pleasure.
There were so many shots from the back in 2011 that I wanted to put together a collection, but my limited tech abilities only made a mess. Drive (that damn jacket), Tree of Life, TGWTDT and others were loaded with them.
Then there was that shot from 2010.
Love the callbacks to Take Shelter, a film where this hallmark immediately jumped to mind.
You could really take a lot from Enter The Void. Pretty certain the character of Oscar was always shot with his back to the camera until he it becomes his POV shot from his dead spirit for the remainder of the movie.
Now that’s just cruel, Ryan.
My favourite shot from 2011 was also from Shame. I made a list but then I deleted it, alas. But it was shit.
That shot from The Last Emperor is absolutely glorious. I had the pleasure of seeing it in 35mm on the big screen. Always loved that movie, and never really understood why it’s not cool enough for some cinephiles to enjoy. In fact, I think Martin Scorsese put it on a top 10 movie list of his at one point.
