Ok. So… What can i say! The Race is actually over! There is and there will be no – and i mean NO – other Actor who will and who could beat Matthew McConaughey! He totally disgraced all the other Actors in the next Award Season! I AM SHOCKED! I AM SPEECHLESS! I AM OVERWHELMED! WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!!!
And by the way i think we just saw theTrailer for the next Best Picture Winner!!!
What a Performance and what a Trailer!
So right now i would predict:
Director (Jean Marc-Vallee)
Leading Actor (Matthew McConaughey)
Supporting Actor (Jared Leto)
Supporting Actress (Jennifer Garner)
I love Jared Leto’s voice in this. I would love to see him get a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Hopefully he isn’t a charicature.
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past reunion that no one asked for!!!
It actually looks way more solid than I was anticipating and now I’m adding this one to the list of movies to-see. If it’s at least as good as the trailer hints, McConaughey is a lock as of now, and possibly in it to win it. Jared Leto? Christ. He might be in too, and if he’s the year’s scene stealer he could be a threat. but he doesn’t have any sort of momentum or accumulated goodwill –as I assume someone like Fassbender (12 YEARS A SLAVE) has. I guess it depends on how likeable/comical she is? I loved the dark comedy exhibited here.
huh? have you seen the movie?
That’s Jared Leto? Didn’t recognize him. McConaughey looks interesting in this
Leto really stood out in that trailer. McConaughey…not so much.
Wow – this looks terrible. McConaughey should go Lead Actor for Mud – has a shot with that one. This has flop written all over it.
get a real dog
Get a real dog? What is wrong with his dog?
Your comment reeks of homophobia.
As a gay man, I’m not sure where you got homophobia from that comment. Unless the dog is gay…
That right there is an Oscar-nominated (at least) performance.
He was good/fine in “Mud,” and I was not sold on the look of him in “Wolf of Wall Street.” But this is something altogether different. Make way for McConaughey for Lead Actor.
Bryce was just taking a shot at the guy’s dog because the guy was declaring this movie a flop before having seen it. Nothing to see here
matthew , leto and garner they are all gettin in…
Yeah! Matthew McConaughey will get a nomination for sure! Jared Leto looks good as well. Garner may get in as the good-girl -the-movie
Ghost of Girlfriends reunion: The Dallas Buyers Club
I’m gay – my dog isn’t. I didn’t take it as homophobic. This doesn’t look good to me. Sorry! This feels like some Philadelphia retread. I loved Mud and think that’s a great performance. Just my opinion. No of you have this yet – have you? Just going on the trailer. My gut tells me this is a flop – Mud is already a hit so I’d bet on that one.
McConaughey nominated in Supporting for Mud and Lead for Dallas Buyer’s Club. Parallel nominations worked out well for Pacino in 1992 and Foxx in 2004.
But wait… Bryce is homophobic? Something about that accusation doesn’t add up.
Yeah jennifer garner looks really bad in this
When has she looked good?
If you had the under 20 minutes in the “First Declaration of A Best Actor Winner Pool”, please see Sasha in Telluride to collect your prize…
…and if you had the Over on the 1 hour mark for the “First ‘This thing looks like a dog (gay or straight)’ Post” you should also get in touch with Sasha to claim your prize.
I have heard this comment before and it is inherently homophobic being said to another man. Because his dog isn’t big and aggressive looking, he is stating get a real dog. I may be inferring this, yes, but it does not belong on this forum. Hate as no place here.
I have to disagree. “Get a real dog” is something straight people with small adorable dogs hear all the time. It does perhaps imply that the owner should “man up” but that’s not homophobia. Any homophobic dick who wants to insult a gay man has 100 more typical and hurtful ways to do it without a being a pussy and picking on a dog.
Bryce, you can explain why you’re not homophobic better than I can.
I’m confused – so McConaughey plays a gay dog in this? I didn’t get that from the trailer…..oh, avatar wars. Cute dog, btw.
MMc looks good in this, and Leto – wow.
Glad you didn’t take it as such! And as Ryan & Chris said I think it’s a bit of a stretch for some to take it that way. Maybe a bit harsh towards your dog, I guess I like other breeds better. I just don’t see anything in this trailer that says flop to me, but to each his own. I can anticipate not liking something based a trailer (AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY) –still unwise tho as proven by THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER but not as grave -I think- as predicting failure.
MUD remains #1 of the year so far for me. So there’s that too.
p.s. I’m gay too and came out at 16 years old, in North Carolina.
I am thinking Bruce Dern in NEBRASKA and Steve Carell in FOXCATCHER among others might disagree with you. But yes this performance looks tremendous.
Cyrus: You are such a drama queen! Man up dude!
And YES! Im a gay fella
Karl: She was really sexy in season 1 + 2 in Alias. But Lena Olin, playing her bad ass witch mother, was even hotter
I think the point is you all need to get gay dogs.
There. I fixed it.
Anyhoo, yeah Leto’s the one who stood out for me too, oddly enough. But they’ve got to go with McConaughey because Oscars are cumulative. Jared’s done work we’ve admired before, but has he been passed over the way McConaughey has? I can’t remember a time.
This is going to be one of those years. Someone, possibly a few deserving people, are going to miss out.
I’m officially excited. I’ve been waiting for MM to return from the dead for years…
Now his return is in full flower.
Both MM and Jared Leto look raw.
They’ve got that gritty, grimy look of 80s Texas down pat.
‘But they’ve got to go with McConaughey because Oscars are cumulative…’
If it weren’t for MM, the film wouldn’t have been made at all. A redneck contracting HIV who partners with a transexual in a drug-traffiking scheme, made by a Hollywood outsider. I love it. I hope it kicks ass all over the usual suspects. I’d love to see MM triumph.
Well, if will get any nomination or win anything, I don’t know. However, the trailer caught my attention. Another one to put on my “must see list”.
Judging by the trailer, I would say the style is consistent with Vallee’s other major work, C.R.A.Z.Y. If you haven’t had a chance to see, you really should–it’s a great film. The trailer suggests that DBC hews closer to C.R.A.Z.Y. than to Philadelphia.
+1 C.R.A.Z.Y. is a great film
WTF?! That director did this?? How’d I miss that? I remember commenting just a few days back that I couldn’t get excited about DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, and one of the reasons was the lack of reliable talent behind the camera. Now I feel stupid.
I haven’t seen C.R.A.Z.Y., but when I found out he was doing this I looked him up, listened to some interviews, and decided he would do it justice. Just listening to him, he seems like he’d go for the outside-the-box, gritty realism….
I think this film has all the elements to be great.
And the academy award for best actor goes to…
well, I’ll be damned…
I try not to let my personal biases affect my impressions of films. though I am a straight white guy, I consider myself a film lover before anything. also (as I hope most of my fellow readers know), I support equality among us all with every beat of my heart.
I made this disclaimer for the following reason: as a film student, I find myself unimpressed by this trailer. though the acting is pretty good, the film itself appears to be a bit lacklustre for my taste.
however, in this particular case, I must say that I hope this film gets the biggest exposure it can get; one of my very best friends I made in NY, a HIV positive gay man, has been able to live with his condition for 5 years. seeing this trailer, I can’t help but think of him.
even if I don’t like the film, this is a message that must be sent as far and wide as possible.
as a semi-aside; I’m so happy to be part of the generation that has kickstarted (kind of) the acceptance of LGBT people among young folks. in 10 years, this will probably not even be an issue. and I’m glad (that was optimism – I HOPE) it won’t be one.
this sure is exciting and it should be after Jean-Marc Vallee’s Cafe de Flore last year i expect good things from him. i loved Cafe de Flore though many didn’t see it.
All this buzz will die down come January. I do not see him winning. Based on the trailer, it was a fine performance. I shall wait for the movie though. PS: Losing weight does not count as good acting. Just reminding y’all.
It’s a freakin 3 minute trailer…lol
I have a question hope someone can answer it for me I think Dennis Quaid. deserves Oscar consideration for his performance in “at any price” my question is does he quality for this seasons awards it was released in theatres in April can someone give me an answer
i agree that cafe de flore was a very good film, marred somewhat by what I felt was a rather clumsy denouement.
