I doubt they’d give both acting awards to Americans, though. They usually like to spread the wealth
Last year just when the list for the competition appear, in a totally crazy, with no ground, senseless hunch (only the basic plotlines, and what I know about the previous works from the filmmakers), I told here on AD that “Blue Is The Warmest Colour” will win the Palme D’Or.
I would do now the same: “Timbuktu”, by Abderrahmane Sissako will win the Palm D’Or. Julianne Moore Best Actress for Map of the Stars, Steve Carrell Best Actor for Foxcatcher. Godard will win the Grand Prix du Jury or the Jury Prize for “Adie au Langage”. People will think is absent, but he will be on the audience.
He will receive a standing ovation, and will do a speech that, for seconds, seems to indicate that he is refusing the award, but actually he is making a bittersweet mockery coment on the current state of cinema/worldwide politics/etc. Godard being Godard. A former “enfant terrible” now in his octagenarian form.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan !! Great director.
Is Mr. Dolan shooting one movie after another? I think he had a movie in Venice, too and that was six months ago.
three Canadian entries in the main competition–I think that’s unprecedented, isn’t it? (Denys Arcand’s latest was apparently expected to be in the line-up, but I guess it didn’t make the cut.
I’m surprised Knight of Cups’s not in there… the line-up is good. Nothing really special
Thanks, @traveler81!
On The Pertinent Questions About Code
When will code be re-enabled in the comments section of Awards Daily?
Igor:
While I’ve been ranting about representation at Cannes forever, in fairness there is an Argentinian film in the min competition: Wild Tales. You’re still right in pointing out that the Competition slate is mainly White men, though. (Un Certain Regard’s a bit better this year)
I do like the little showdown between biopics by legendry British directors going on in the Main Competition though. Loach and Leigh are a great contrasting duo.
Another thing about this list:
it’s almost totally Euro-American. No Latin American and a few Asian films. Berlin and Venice are much more opened to other region than Cannes.
I hope you are going to Cannes Sasha. I really enjoy reading your film diary.
This list, like many, is missing Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu.
thanks, Paddy! Fixed.
I’m surprised Godard continues to make films at this time. Question is if he’s got it, which apparently he doesn’t anymore in the past two decades. Foxcatcher and Mr. Turner have my attention.
My fears have materialized! Harvey Weinstein has in all likelihood fucked THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ELEONORY RIGBY which was enthusiastically received by intellectuals at TIFF last year.
🙁 🙁 🙁
Formerly a two-part 190min epic romance from each POV is now a 1-part 119min of whatever the fuck is left. This is of course to maximize “Oscar potential” therefore most of the James McAvoy stuff is now gone. This is truly tragic.
Next victim should be THE IMITATION GAME, but hey, don’t despair, at least we have DAU being released sometime in our lifetime, honoring scientific genius pertinently.
This is of course to maximize “Oscar potential”
Not even that. It’s just that Harvey Weinstein doesn’t think any human being can sit still for longer than 2 hours.
What happened to Serena? I don’t get the mystery surrounding this movie. Is it so bad that they keep hiding it?
About the lineup, Jessica Hausner should have been in competition. And where is Mia Hansen-Love?
I’m rooting for Assayas to win the Palme d’Or.
@HUDSON Cronenberg is in. they’ve already fixed it.
Is Grace of Monaco in the competition? Im little bit confused.
traveler81
Grace of Monaco is screening out of competition.
By the way, the Ryan Gosling’s movies changed its name?
No surprise here. Lots of expectation on Assayas, Ceylan, Dardennes and Tommy Lee Jones
MAPS TO THE STARs? David Cronenberg isn’t in the list in official site: http://www.festival-cannes.fr/pt/article/60533.html
Good selection, but nothing insane. Looking forward to hearing about MR. TURNER, MAPS TO THE STARS, a return to form with THE CAPTIVE,FOXCATCHER, THE HOMESMAN, LEVIATHAN, TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT, and from the motherland, WILD TALES. And that’s it.
They will most certainly add a couple more titles to the main competition, right?
insane to be able to see so much all at once and fresh.
So we will soon know whether or not FOXCATCHER is the big time contender we all expect it to be. Easily my most anticipated film of the year.
