Looks to me to be Woody Allen’s most promising premise in years.
thanks, Bryce!

Cate the great, Queen Cate… She is a true actor, simply the best in my lifetime. I can’t wait to see her back on the screen. It has been difficult time being a huge fan of mrs. Blanchett because I’m a student from Europe and Cate has been doing theatre in Australia. And STC’s and Cate’s stage visits have approached only NYC, DC, UK and Germany. I envy you who have been privileged enough to see Cate on the stage.
Louis CK!!!
Yippee. All the right players in all the right roles. And set in San Francisco yet!
There’s a lot of love (deserved) for Cate Blanchett on this site. A little seen film she did in the mid-1990s “Oscar and Lucinda” with Ralph Fiennes is still one of my favorite CB performances. She was heart-breaking in that movie (her first big film role, I believe) and helped define her as one of the best actresses in film early on in her career, which has been a stunning one if you look at her filmography. She’s made good choices in her roles.
I also thought she should have won the BSA for “Notes on a Scandal”.
I think Sasha wrote about Gena Rowlands in a great lead performance from Woody Allen’s “Another Woman” which got overlooked by AMPAS, inexplicably. I don’t think that will happen to Miss Blanchett here. She looks very, very good in “Blue Jasmine”.
Dave L: I found MIP and VCB mildly diverting, if insubstantial. Match Point? That’s Crimes and Misdemeanours set in a British upper class context, nothing more. And we all know that Woody does middle class NY Jews so much better. Right? Sweet and Lowdown was interesting for what it set out to achieve, but not very successful. I like Bullets over Broadway, but that’s 20 years ago, which only goes to show…
could Hawkins be next entry in the series “oscar winning (or nominated) best supporting actress performances delivered in a film by Allen”?
first reactions for “The Maids”:
“…Cate Blanchett is in stunning form as Claire, picking up every nuance and flying through her character’s more difficult turns with skill and grace. Isabelle Huppert delivers a strong, textured and playful performance, but doesn’t bring the same kind of refinement and depth as Blanchett.”

O.M.G.!! BLANCHETT AND HAWKINS FOR OSCAR!
I’m looking forward to it. Always great to see La Blanchett on the screen, and Michael Stuhlbarg and Louie C.K. are actors that were seemingly born to be Woody Allen films.
Looks terrific.
Getting a bit sick of ‘Woody hasn’t delivered since 1992’ comments, though. There are some excellent films that he popped out since then, and it’s not like everything he did before 1992 was masterpiece, either…September anyone?
Quick reminder – critical hits since 1992 include Match Point, Midnight in Paris, Sweet and Lowdown, Bullets Over Broadway etc.
So let’s give this tired ‘Woody has expired’ cliche a bit of a rest.
thank you.. I echo your sentiments on Woody Allen
Agreed. Woodly always delivers, even though it may not be what you want.
Blanchett and Allen is a perfect match. He’ll let her do whatever she wants and she can do no wrong.
Welcome back Woody.
Welcome back yourself, wandering samurai.
Going to see Cate in a production of The Maids here in Sydney next week. Can’t wait!
this is just so unfair! but alive and healthy I’ll watch “Blue Jasmine” in London this September.
Cate Blanchett can really immerse herself into any roles.
The problem with Cate is that she hasn’t exactly done a real enticing role for…what…seven or eight years, at least. I know she has been focusing on other stuff (theater, family) and she should be applauded for that, I guess, but even before her film career became kind of low-profile she increasingly chose to take roles not befitting her talent.
Blue Jasmine seems a refreshing move, it is a bona fide leading part. I just don’t want to set myself up for yet another disappointment with an on-paper exciting new Woody project. Let’s face it, the man hasn’t delivered the goods since…I don’t know…Husbands and Wives (and parts of Deconstructing Harry). But I hope that I’m wrong. I hope this works out well.
And the Oscar goes to…..Andrew Dice Clay…okay…why not…
I guess he deserves some points for trying to go legit.
just wait and watch how Best Actress Top Fives will be updated all over the Internet within a week 🙂
I’ve seen every film she’s done. I love her!
I REALLY REALLY want this to be good.
Love Cate. What’s up with the weird accents in San Francisco?
I got temporarily banned from San Francisco for excess rowdiness but I remember people there from all over the world throwing their accents in the mix, yes?
Is that even possible? San Francisco?
Very very possible. For all its reputation San Francisco is one of the most civilized places around these parts. I recommend New Orleans for those activities. It’s coming along now!
…what, did you topple over a Muni bus or something? I’ve never heard of someone being banned from a city, especially San Francisco.
I can’t wait to see this film. I am a huge Allen fan but an even bigger Blanchett devote. I have just seen her on the stage here in Sydney in “The Maids” with Isabelle Huppert and they were both brilliant. Cate was jaw-dropping amazing. Her beauty matched her talent.
Cate in Streetcar was a sight to behold. I can’t wait for her to be back on the screen. Cyrus is trying to challenge me for biggest fan though I see.
My Queen is back with a bang!
Christopher Lewis: I totally agree with you. There are shades of her Streetcar performance. I also was so lucky to watch Blanchett in stage in DC. Will never forget that incredible experience. My God that woman is freaking talented
Amen!
The Diceman! Woohoo!
I love that he was cast in the role Woody intended for Louis C.K. 😀 He’s a good actor. So I can’t wait to see him in this. I really enjoyed TO ROME WITH LOVE. I thought it was better than MIDNIGHT IN PARIS. If BLUE JASMINE doesn’t play here I’ll have to find another way to watch it and then rewatch it redbox style.
Well, easy now, Cyrus. Two of those were supporting roles…
Yes, I know, but she would have deserved those two additional Supporting Oscars as well. She deserves every accolade she gets. Can you tell I am a bit obsessed with her 😉
MY LOVE MY FAVORITE CATE BLANCHETT !! ONE DAY YOU WILL BE REDEEMED AND GET THAT BEST ACTRESS OSCAR YOU WERE ROBBED OF FOR ELIZABETH AND I’M NOT THERE AND NOTES ON SCANDAL !!!
I am not a huge Allen fan but I think this could be fantastic.
Love this so much. Allen back to drama, and Cate back on the screen. I think they were made for each other. She looks Oscar-worthy, for sure.
I really want Baldwin to step out of his comfort zone, and this doesn’t really seem to be it, but he’s so fricken charming in everything he’s in I don’t think it’ll matter.
Excited to see Hawkins chew some scenery with Blanchette, the two of them together should be great to watch!
Was lucky enough to see Blanchett in Streetcar in DC (a hauntingly beautiful performance that I will never forget) and there are shades of that performance in this small trailer. I hope the movie goes further than what seems to be an updated version of the Williams classic.
I know it’ll be amazing regardless. Huge fan of Allen and think when he is good, he is on fire.

Moments like this, I wish the Vulcan Mind Meld was a real thing.
While, I have certainly loved her in film–it wasn’t until I saw her on stage that I was truly struck by the immensity of her talent. Seeing her afterwards was an extra treat–as lovely as she is talented and far more beautiful in person than the camera can even begin to capture. she glows.
Man, this looks so good
I’m putting it down as lock for Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay nominations. Best Picture and even a few others seem to be at hand too but you never know just by the trailer.
I love this trailer. Already.
Cate Blanchett looks so good (promising) even in this brief teaser. . .
I’m so excited!
PS: Hawkins and Baldwin, the former in particular, look as if they apparently had great chemistry with Blanchett’s Jasmine as well.
Again, I’m so excited!

Orgasm reached in joy. . . at the end of this comment. Mission accomplished, Ethan.
Don’t normally like Woody’s movies, but this looks like a winner.
SallyinChicago,
Thanks for your response. It sure looks like a winner.
(Orgasm reached, for the second time. Again, mission accomplished, Ethan.)

Sidenote: (SallyinChicago) Four or five years ago, I used to follow EW’s online articles. Regularly. And at times almost religiously. . . . My point: If you are the one I believe to be, given the exact username, then for the record I always enjoyed your EW comments. . . . Cheers. (Wondering if “LOL” is still around and making stupid comments like “Americans love crap”…. [lol])
Definitely an update of “Streetcar Named Desire” vibe I’m getting. I’m so excited! I really miss seeing Cate Blanchett on the silver screen.
I’m just getting an update of half of Melinda and Melinda.
