Hideous TV nominations, with the best drama series of the past 10 years – Continuum – gets shut out altogether. Supergirl’s fantastic winter finale showed just how short-sighted the Circle (jerks?) are by snubbing Melissa Benoist and Calista Flockhart.
Why do you think Melissa Benoist would be recognized? She is serviceable in a serviceable show.
Without Action and Comedy Categories, those are the greatest nominations i’ve seen so far. Just sad about Idris and Keaton. Happy to see Depp and Cranston (one does not invalidate the other). And some love for Hardy in The Revenant.
So … Variety says the reaction to last night’s screening of ”Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was ”overwhelmingly positive.” Will it find space among the Best Picture nominees? And which movie will it bump out?
One of the Variety critics posted that it was better than prequels and on par with Jedi. That is good but not BP good. Unless it makes hella bank and AMPAs give them a slot just because.
With too many nominees and they bothered to have an Action/Adventure and Sci-Fi/Horror categories but not Fantasy? That’s genre discrimination!!!
This is making me so hopeful for a Spotlight/Mad Max BP/BD split (although McCarthy absolutely deserves a nomination)
Carol keeps missing in Adapted Screenplay. A very tough category to crack this year, but am I alone in being completely dumbfounded by this? What an exquisite piece of writing by Phyllis Nagy! Hoping the general Best Picture buzz will earn it an Oscar nod in this category, where it could win.
Am I really in the minority in thinking Jurassic World deserves more Razzie nominations than accolades?
I’m with you.
Hooray!!
I fourth the motion
Nope; it’s just a reboot of Jurassic Park.
I really didn’t understand why they kept referencing the original. All that did was draw unfavorable comparisons.
I had fun watching it, but, yeah, it’s pretty ridiculous, to say the least…
BEST COMEDY
The Big Short
Inside Out
Joy
Sisters
Spy
Trainwreck
Does anyone notice anything odd about this list? Where is “The Martian”? It is nominated in this category at the Golden Globes but it is missing here. Or is “The Martian Musical instead of comedy? “The Big Short” is huge favourite at GG and will ride that momentum to the Oscars. “The Martian’s” will pay for its category fraud.
Yeah, Birdman paid a huge price for LOSING in comedy last year. Ha.
I said it would pay for its category fraud by losing the Golden Globe awards to TBS. You think “The Martian” could do “Birdman”, a film that was about the industry and was a superior film? “Birdman” doing “Birdman” was a shock but “The Martian” is no “Birdman”.
Category fraud was The HFPA putting The Martian in comedy. It’s not a comedy at all. Ridiculous. These guys got it right.
I think it was Fox’s decision to compete in Comedy not the HFPA. Because thought it won’t have a stiff competition in Comedy. Then The Big Short arrived a legit comedy in my opinion. And a better film as well.
“John Smith” is on his Martian bashing job again!
Pointing out category fraud is bashing job?
And don’t forget, people … a little something called Star Wars might smash it’s way into 5-7 tech categories, taking some spots away that we see here today.
HI guys, I would have been here sooner, but I was reading the whole list aloud
this is the funniest thing you’ve ever said lol
low bar to clear
Flame away, but I actually enjoy the BFCA every year. The TV broadcast is always a horrific shit show, but an entertaining one (for me, at least).
And — they always manage to nominate people who I LOVE who wound-up getting left-off of SAG/GG lists.
So I’m down with them.
Rampling and Theron are on the best actress list so I have few complaints.
I think TJ Miller will make it good this year. Bit of a loose cannon.
Actor
Cranston
Carell
di caprio
Damon
Fass bender
I still think Redmayne gets in because he’s made the SAG/GG/BFCA (will likely get in with BAFTA), and he’s a charming campaigner with a baity movie/role. Residual admiration/respect from 10 months ago should be pretty strong, too.
Who will BAFTA snub? Because I have a feeling they will nominate Caine and McKellen. Fassbender is also a home talent.
Hopefully Di Caprio AND Damon and we can see people collectively lose their shit
Everybody expects BAFTA to stan for the home team.
And while everyone’s assuming Brie Larson will win … and she very well may … Brooklyn is also nominated for BP and 4 other times (more than Room) and Saoirse Ronan has been a favorite with this BFCA group in the past.
Personally, I’m not counting out Blanchett.
Why not go back to five for oscar
The big short
Mad max fury road
The Martian
The revenant
Spotlight
Mad Max
Martian
Ex Machina
Star Wars
Inside Out
all sci fi Best Picture lineup!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would work for me, but Inside Out is stretching the category past the breaking point.
Minions >>>> Inside Out.
too many awards.
There are just too many nominees here between all the different categories. Its like the Golden Globes on steroids with lots of silly categories.
They should just rename it the Critics Loved Everybody So Everybody Gets Nominated Awards.
Looking at the noms and potentials with AMPAS, I think a “5” – if this was a year of “5” – might be:
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Carol
The Martian
Spotlight
Pretty kick-ass if you ask me!!
OK, after these BFCAs, I’m know thinking that AMPAS may go:
Actor:
Leo
Fassbender
Redmayne
Damon
McKellen/Cranston
Actress:
Blanchett
Mara (I could see AMPAS and BAFTA doing this)
Larson
Ronan
Rampling
Supp. Actor:
Rylance
Stallone
Ruffalo
Shannon
Hardy
(but I could easily see Elba, Dano or Keaton in there at someone’s expense)
Supp. Actress:
Vikander (I think AMPAS will go with the Supporting narrative)
Winslet
Fonda
JJL
Mirren
(should be Banks )
That’s how I see it right now.
not sure I buy the number one votes for McAdams to get in, but anything else seems about right.
True (McAdams and #1 votes)
Yeah, I don’t get that at all.
Yeah I took out McAdams and put in JJL, huge oversight
Did Hardy get a supporting nod any significant place but here? I can’t remember.
Hardy got a Supporting nod from the DC critics, and he got Actor & Supporting noms from Houston. Hardy also won Best Actor at Toronto, and the runner-up was Leonardo DiCaprio!
Toronto feels like it was ten years ago.
Max does have 13, yes. But if you scratch the “funny ones” you are left with 9 “real ones”, same as Carol and Revenant. Martian has eight, same as Spotlight. And I guess if it was still down to 5 movies for BP at the Oscars, that’s exacly how the lineup would look like.
– Mad Max: Fury Road
– Revenant
– Carol
– The Martian
– Spotlight
and right now I’m guessing all five will be nominated for BP. The ones that will probably join them are
– The Big Short (at this point a near lock, may win Comedy and the Globes)
– Room (no Ensemble nod from SAG, but two not one individual nods)
– Brooklyn (safe choice for many)
– and something tells me the ugliest of all – Trumbo (about the industry, the line-up is not complete without a solid, down to earth, wikipedia style biopic with a strong (usually male) lead).
I think you are right that. Even though it doesn’t have strong reviews, “The Revenant” is showing up everywhere due mostly to the films stars. I believe that everyone is underestimating “Bridge Of Spies” which doesn’t only have the Spielberg factor but other big hitters like Tom Hanks and the Coens. Always assume a Spielberg film will be nominated for Oscars until it isn’t.
I still think Bridge Of Spies is a safe bet.
I agree 100% when it comes to “Bridge of Spies” and it almost made my list, but when it comes to that movie I’m waiting for what the Guilds have to say, especially the PGA. I also agree that one should never underestimate the power of Spielberg and finally, the movie is pretty darn good :). I guess it might ride the same bandwagon as Brooklyn – it is the elegant, distinguished, classic filmmaking. A movie that makes you feel good. I guess there is a high chance it will get nominated, but not if it doesn’t get that PGA bump. Without that it doesn’t have enough going for it.
I also believe that Bridge of Spies will still slip-in with 4-6 noms. Good reviews, good box office, people love that film, and it’s an AMPAS type.
It’s a very baity film. Talk about pedigree. Do you how many people who’ve worked on BOS are either multiple Oscar winners or have been nominated multiple times? It the must be some kind of record.
I’m purely speculating here, but I think the people who are going to nominate BoS are the people not really liking Mad Max. One is baity, other is genre. If BoS doesn’t get in, Mad Max might have a good night at the Oscars.
Even if BOS gets in, I don’t it has much chance of winning more than Best Supporting Actor for Rylance and maybe an overdue Best Score for Newman.
Yes, Trumbo got a SAG Ensemble (it’s EXACTLY) the type of film to get one.
But I’m thinking that it’s mehh reviews + no GG Best Film nom + no BFCA Best Film nom means it won’t sneak into the 8/9.
Max will end up with the most Oscar noms or tied for the most, which will help George Miller out immensely.
Will Max end up with most nominations? It’s possible, but without a sho-in for an acting nod, that might be harder than it seems. Just look at Slumdog.
Will it help George Miller? It’s possible, but look how much good did these 13 nominations did for David Fincher.
Ok. Right now I’m comparing Mad Max to both Slumdog and Benjamin Button. I need to get some sleep 🙂
Anyone else find it weird that The Hateful Eight consistently wins Best Screenplay citations yet fails to make the Top 10s of any group who lists 10? How can a movie be the best written of the year yet not be at least one of the 10 best? I know these are nominees and it may not win here, but it is a trend I’ve noticed in critics’ awards this year.
Sometimes it’s just about pedigree. Everyone knows Tarantino writes great screenplays because he won two Best Screenplay Oscars, so they nominate him even if they don’t like the film overall.
Seems odd to me that your film would be one of the 5 best written yet not be cited as one of the 10 best of the year. Because a screenplay is, you know, what a movie IS.
And, honestly, people have done more than nominate him. He’s straight up won some Best Screenplay awards and the film doesn’t show up on that top 10.
Also, this Critics Choice list is particularly egregious since they ALSO awarded a nod to it being one of the 5 best acting ensembles of the year, along with score and cinematography. So, let me get this straight: it’s one of the 5 best written and best acted movies of the year (not to mention one of the 5 best shot and scored), but not even one of the 10 best films overall of the year?
HATEFUL EIGHT will be divisive. I think it’s pretty mediocre stuff. And I am a big QT fan. He keeps getting nominated because they want him to show up!
Disagree about mediocrity. Its a buffet of cinema with some fantastic performances.
I will give you that Goggins gave a great performance but Leigh (whom I ADORE) is NOT award worthy. Like I said it’s divisive. At my screening there were journos breaking up into camps it seemed. For me, it was overly indulgent–even using his past films as a measure.
I also thought Sam Jackson, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern were all excellent
I take your point but you look at the opposite and one of the outstanding films this year, MMFR, doesn’t have strong screenplay. Without a screenplay there’s no film but you need great direction to make a great film.
I agree that a strong directorial vision is key to most great films (although there are definitely exceptions to that rule). But the CC DID nominate H8 for Best Cinematography and Best Score, along with Best Ensemble (and Best Hair & Makeup). If they had given it a Production Design nod they would’ve basically awarded the entire production across the board, cast and crew, including the building block of the whole thing, the Screenplay. It just seems funny to me, that’s all. Mad Max DOES have a fantastic ensemble, insane cinematography, excellent production design and a great score, just like Hateful Eight. And once you see the movie, I think you’ll agree it has a strong directorial vision, especially considering it comes from the eyes of the guy who wrote the damn thing.
Not all the films nominated got those nominations that Hateful 8 got, but I would take this nominations across the board as evidence that film is itself great. I think there many of these nominations are about pedigree and not necessarily rewarding the best work. You might like something about a film and some filmmaker but it doesn’t mean you liked the film as a whole. Some films are loved but it isn’t strong across the board compared to other no so great films. Tarantino has many fans but they know the film isn’t great, so they are trying to push him for screenplay because they think that has best chance of nomination.
The movie IS great. I’ve seen it twice.
Then why isn’t it nominate anywhere?
It is nominated everywhere, for screenplay, which again seems strange to me. It’s a MUCH better film than Django Unchained. My best guess is that QT lost a few people with the police stuff, or the movie simply arrived too late to build a case, yet QT still gets in for Screenplay due to, as you said, “pedigree”.
My guess would usually be that they feel compelled to credit it — that is, they admire it. But they don’t like it all that much as a whole. Still, I agree it’s odd.
Did it arrive later than “The Revenant”? I think you right about it arriveing late. There’s still no reviews of the film, what’s that about. If you don’t allow your film to be seen, how can you complain it’s not getting rewarded. How have you seen it? There isn’t any reviews for it out there, so we don’t really know how good it is. I think the film isn’t as good as was expected and that’s why it’s shrouded in mystery. If the film is great, TWC and Tarantino have shot themselves in the foot by getting their film out so late.
I am a SAG voting member. I’ve seen it twice at the DGA in Hollywood in 70mm. It arrived about a week and a half later than Revenant and is still embargoed until the 21st. It is really a very good movie. I’d rank it just below Basterds but definitely above Django.
Hateful is nominated for screenplay because it’s a weak category. Neither Revenant or Mad Max are ever going to be nominated for their screenplay.
Could be a combination of being quite divisive and being late-breaking.
Holding out hope that Mad Max will beat Spotlight (because Spotlight is not indicative of how great of a year in film this has been).
Wow! Mad Max leading the nominations, and Rectify gets some TV award love (very underrated show). This award season is awesome so far!
”Mad Max” is leading because its tally is inflated by categories that won’t be at the Oscars: Action, Sci-Fi. If you take out the Action & Sci-Fi entries, it has 9 nominations, just like ”Carol” and ”The Revenant.”
Those awards were only manufactured to make the Broadcast Film Critics’ Awards (Critics’ Choice) more friendly to TV audiences. The Best Action Film category didn’t come into being until 2009. And a few years later, they added Actor & Actress in a Comedy and Action, hoping to draw more mainstream movie stars.
Something we all need to prepare for: Adam McKay getting nominated for Best Director. Over who? Over Ridley Scott. Get ready for it.
I think McKay will have squeeze into the BD if TBS is to win BP. It could well be Scott but he could squeeze out Inarritu instead.
The Big Short is only in four of the Oscar categories, half of what The Martian’s noms are. They’d choose a comedy director over a living legend making one his most beloved films in his late seventies? Not seeing that happening.
I was considering this outcome too. Pitt’s Plan B produced The Big Short so McKay will have that support the same way 12YAS benefited.
I think Best Actress is between Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson. Ronan has picked up her fair share of critics awards with Larson not far behind. Do you think Ronan’s age will be a problem at the Oscars next year?
They’ve both won their fair share indeed, but Ronan seems to be winning the more prestigious ones. Ronan’s performance in ”Brooklyn” is really mature and she resembles an old Hollywood star (as many say). Having been last nominated at 13, I feel this is her year. She certainly has advantages with the AMPAS.
They were both amazing performances so I probably won’t be mad if one wins over the other. Which will most likely happen at this point.
I hope Ronan wins, but I still think Larson is more likely.
Didn’t Anna Paquin win when she was 11? lawrence also won when she was 22 or 23. The Academy has no problems with honouring young actresses.
I agree and nominated child stars have gone on to win Oscars in their early 20s. .
More to the point, a number of female child stars have been nominated & won Oscars.
But no boy has ever won. The youngest guy to win an Oscar is Timothy Hutton, 20.
I guess that’s down to the majority of male voters. Usually men don’t win Oscars until they’re in their 30s.
Actually, the average age for the Best Actor Oscar winner is 44. Best Actress, however, is 36.
Paquin won for supporting. The youngest Oscar winner is Tatum O’Neil for Paper Moon.
I believe Ronan’s racked up 5 awards, including N.Y. Film Critics, so far. Larson’s won 3, including NBR.
And Ronan’s age (21) is a plus. Oscar voters (especially older men) love ingenues.
Plus, Ronan got her 1st nomination for ”Atonement” when she was 13!
Ronan is a fave with the BFCA (from years past). Interesting, I think.
It’s outrage they didnt nominate Inside Out with 10 spots? Hope AMPAS does!
Sicario is probably not getting a BP nod so yes Inside Out in place of thet. If they actually do nominate 10 movies and not less.
No writings on the wall for best song.
No “Feels Like Summer” for Best Song? You better not screw up by snubbing it, Academy.
>__<
Does anyone find it interesting that Hateful Eight still isn’t racking up Best Picture nominations even though it seems to be a shoe-in for Screenplay and cinematography? Here it was also nominated for best ensemble. So if a movie has one of the years best scripts, which is immaculately filmed and awesomely acted, why is it not translating to Best Picture love? I know the movie is divisive, and I haven’t seen it, but I’m just trying to look at it from this analytical angle.
Yes it is. Also that QT is missing from a lot of the best director list. It must have not hit the right vein with the critics. That does not mean he will not be nominated for the Academy obviously.
Like I said elsewhere, divisive film (with great craft and performances) and late-breaking.
I said the exact same thing above. Divisive, my ass. I’ve seen it twice in a packed house at the DGA and it was rapturously received. Enthusiastic applause at the end of the Overture, the Intermission and the ending.
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
The Assassin
Goodnight Mommy
Mustang
The Second Mother
Son of Saul
This looks like your Oscar lineup 😉
Rams is missing. 🙁
I know Son of Saul is kind of a lock but i wish Mustang would have been in talks more. It was beautiful.
I actually think MUSTANG, if it gets nominated, has a good shot at winning the thing. Maybe France’s biggest chance since Amélie, 15 years ago.
Son of Saul is impressive, but it’s also harrowing. Sometimes the big favourite loses: see Pan’s Labyrinth, or Waltz with Bashir losing to Departures.
I wish PHOENIX was in there, but alas.
Yes, Germany submitted LABYRINTH OF LIES instead ! At least, Nina Hoss is winning some critcis awards 🙂
Here’s the Seattle Top 10 Film Poll if you care at all. Seems like they have the best taste of all American cities.
http://seattlescreenscene.com/2015/12/14/the-2015-seattle-film-poll/
Thank you!
What flawless taste.
Preach!
Boy, they really liked Blackhat, didn’t they?
Yep, Seattle rocked. The Man doesn’t want to give them a critics’ group because they’d rock the boat just like this!
Charlize Theron is nominated twice, for Best Actress and Best Actress in a Action movie
I’m continually dismayed when looking over the Best Actor nominations lists by all of these various organizations and never seeing Ian McKellen’s beautiful work in Mr. Holmes. I don’t give a fuck. For me, this guy gave the best performance of the year in a film that is simply not getting the attention it deserves this awards season. Same comment re Laura Linney as Best Supporting Actress in the film.
Preach!
McKellen wouldn’ve needed a push from the critics’ awards to put him on the map. And that’s what he had when he did ”Gods and Monsters.” He won the NBR, L.A. Film Critics, Indie Spirit, Broadcast Critics, etc.
Agreed. Reports are that McKellen has been EVERYWHERE campaigning and he is a critical favorite. So … how in the heck has he not been popping up ANYWHERE?
The San Francisco & St. Louis critics nominated McKellen … and that’s about it.
No Big Short for Hair&Makeup is the only shocker. All those wigs weren’t enough.
Having just seen Trumbo, I could see that film making a longlist/shortlist for Hair and Make-Up.
I missed my deadline for final predictions. I think I’m skipping them altogether this year. It’s hard to get any work done down here.
These are starting to look more and more redundant now. Like every year, we start off saying “it’s a wide open race, we don’t know whose gonna make the cut” to “predictable”. Excellent films, but it’s rubber stamping for sure. The acting races still remain a mystery, with many people fighting ‘for that fifth slot’. Nice to see Theron get in- I hope Oscar remembers.
I agree. Redundancy. I hope AMPAS will look beyond the current batch of never-ending lists that are beginning to look more like the Golden Globes.
Given their history, many Oscar voters aren’t that imaginative. You’re lucky they see the screeners!
The lack of ‘The End of the Tour’ makes me sad. What a great film and what an amazing performance by Jason Segel. It’s my favorite performance of the year so far. The love for The Leftovers in the TV section makes me happy though, that show is the best show that I’ve seen in the last two years.
For some reason I think Beasts of No Nation will somehow be nominated for Best Pic, even though it might not seem likely.
I agree 100%. It is definitely the most underrated movie for 2015. I thought it was so well done and I thought Segel would be getting more recognition.
That would be great if Beasts of No Nation was a surprise nominee on the morning of Oscar nominations. I’m bummed that Idris Elba didn’t make the cut here for his supporting actor work, but I hope he gets Oscar recognition. He’s sensational. So is that kid Abraham Attah, who I think would be more than deserving of a Best Actor nod. If Quvenzhané Wallis can get nominated for her fine-but-overrated work in Beasts of the Southern Wild (how ironic that the names of the films are so similar), then I see no reason why Attah’s far superior performance can’t be either.
Glad to see The Walk get some love for SFX.
Good lord how many categories do they have ?? Who nominated Hardy for Mad Max?? What is this
Anyone know if Hardy is campaigning? If not, he oughta be with THREE movies getting awards buzz.
He should get spiffed up (fashion-wise) and make the rounds ASAP.
I mean, who else are they going to nominate? Vin Diesel in Furious 7?
They should just get rid of those stupid categories, honestly. Makes these awards look even more worthless.
Mad Max is going to kick ass at the Oscars this year. If there’s a God, MM will win Best Picture!
Not while Spotlight exists lol
If there’s a God, he’ll definitely have more important things to take care of…
Interesting nominations…as usual though the BFCA tries to predict what the Academy will nominate- hence the ridiculous amount of slots per category.
Few thoughts…
Where in the hell is Idris Elba for Supporting Actor?
Thought they would show Creed and Straight Outta Compton a little more love.
I have no idea who will win Best Supporting Actress. It’s literally anyone’s prize at this moment.
Thoughts on Kristen Stewart…
I meant to post this on the other thread about her chances for a supporting actress nod but didn’t get a chance to. I may be mistaken, but unless a performance is so big that it cannot be ignored campaigning must be done. Now I don’t know Ms. Stewart but based off the few interviews I’ve seen her in she comes off as somewhat awkward and uncomfortable. This doesn’t necessarily make anyone WANT to vote for her. I know it should be based solely on the performance but this is the nature of the game.
On the TV side…
Yay for Krysten Ritter! I loved Jessica Jones. I was upset she didn’t get a nod at the Golden Globes which usually pick out there choices.
This is total whitewash. Don’t worry Elba will be at the Academy wards.
Re Stewart:
Campaigning has to be done by the studio. IFC didn’t even send out DVD screeners.
How is she supposed to campaign for a movie, most voters have not seen?
It’s a real shame Idris Elba is missing here. I hope the Academy recognizes him. It’d be great if the film popped up in Best Picture as well.
SHOCKED not to see Trumbo in BP. What, after SAG and whatnot.
Why? it’s got Best Ensemble just like SAG. Best Ensemble =/= Best Picture. It may indicate what actors like overall but there’s no equation mark precisely because movies that aren’t ensemble pieces don’t get SAG Ensemble noms.
Lol, I don’t give a fuck about that movie. I hope it gets nowhere near the Oscars
Cranston Rises is in.
It’ll do better at Oscars. Hollywood actors vote on a film about Hollywood actors. And they can show off liberal cred by knocking the blacklist. Could it be more self-congratulatory? 😉
It could be the acting is top notch but the film overall isn’t good enough. that happens often and BP and great acting linked but are not always together.
Looking at these, The Revenant did VERY well. It matched Mad Max Fury Road in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyle and Best Visual Effects.
The Revenant also got Best Actor, Best Original Score and Best Supporting Actor.
Mad Max Fury Road got Best Actress, Best Production Design and Best Costumes..
Assuming, that they both add the two sound categories, both films are looking at 11 Oscar Nominations!!!
And The Revenant is back to 80MC..
It’s highly unlikely that will happen. I think the most any film will get this year is nine nominations. The film with the most nominations is likely to be “Carol”. I also think “Bridge Of Spies” is been underestimated and has a good chance to rack up big number of nominations, but will win none except Best Supporting Actor for Rylance.
Highly unlikely. BFCA has 6 nods in their categories (except for Picture) – compared to AMPAS 5.
Mad Max, The Martian, Spotlight, Carol, and Revenant are in a virtual dead heat when potential Oscar slots are considered. Which is really exciting! I know it’s kind of on a roll but it surprises me to see The Big Short crop up in BP when it has so few “important” noms.
I believe “The Big Short” is the sleeper for BP and the biggest threat to “Spotlight”. Missing out for BD is going to hurt its chances but it does seem like it could get consensus if “Spotlight” loses support.
Big Short winning best picture? Lol, I’ll eat my hat. Minimal tech noms.
I can see The Big Short getting Best Adapted Screenplay and maybe Best Film Editing nominations over Bridge of Spies and that’s it. I am happy for Tom Hardy and Theron. I hope that they get in at the Oscars. It will speak to the respective strength of these two movies..
Trumbo will get a big FAT zero nominations… Good riddance!!!
Perhaps you’ve not been paying enough attention, but “The Big Short” has a SAG Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor noms and 4 GG noms including Best Picture Comedy/Musical, two Best actor in a Comedy/Musical and Best Screenplay. “The Big Short” should the big favourite to win the Comedy/Musical category and especially since it big rival, “The Martian”, is category fraud. Note the Best Ensemble SAG and the fact that only one film has won without getting a nom. That means “Spotlight is the big favourite but if it were to miss, then that puts “TBS” at the front with its SAG Ensemble nom as well as its potential wins at the GG. I believe TBSA will win big at GG and take away “The Martian” chances at the Oscars. “The Martian” is category fraud and should be snubbed by GG.
Like Birdman was snubbed last year?
I haven’t watched The Big Short yet, but I totally agree with you. When I think about it, The Big Short is just as good or better in the things that make Spotlight a BP contender :
showcasing an important current issue (need for investigative journalism vs. financial crisis, things haven’t really changed) +
a good cast full of well-liked, well-known actors doing a good job (I’m assuming on TBS), working off a good script +
good box office, which is extremely likely for TBS.
Plus, I think The Big Short has more potential for being a “fun” film. Not that Spotlight’s not fun, but I hope Adam McKay brings a little something funny.
I can see how popular “TBS” is with the industry and how it ‘s shaping up to be a big challenger and a party crasher. I think some people will notice that when it wins Best picture Comedy/Musical and Best Actor for Bale. “The Martian” is a category fraud and will lose to TBS.
Carrell is going lead, Bale is going supporting. And The Martian is funnier than 70% of the movies nominated in comedy the last … Well, forever.
If it’s really THAT strong (which I doubt), it’ll get nominated for BD as well…
Number of noms means nothing. American Hustle had biggest number of noms and won zero.
”The Turning Point” and ”The Color Purple” each got the most nominations (11) and lost ’em all.
Still, it’s better to be nominated and in the hunt than to be shut out before the race has begun.
true.
I’m so strangely excited to see REVENANT. There’s no day when I don’t think I will surely hate it and then quickly revert to “wait, maybe I will love it.” Certainly doesn’t sound half-assed.
Something isn’t right with Revenant’s RT score. Number of positive reviews grew and yet RT score is still 82%. There are 51 reviews, 42 fresh and 9 rotten and the score is the same like it was when it had 38 fresh and 9 rotten.
There is almost always a delay on RT, and that’s not a huge statistical difference.
Four extra fresh, I wonder why it its score hasn’t jumped up?
That’s true. because they belong to WB they were so obviously delaying negative reviews for Hobbit movies. It was hilarious.
You could write them an angry email see if that works.
nah, I don’t care that much.
Nice to see the additional love for ”Brooklyn” in Costume and Production, but it deserved Ensemble, too!
No Best Picture nominations for ”Steve Jobs,” ”Straight Outta Compton” or ”Trumbo.”
Steve Jobs hasn’t made it to most Best Picture nomination lists, so, I have doubts this great film will even be nominated in that category come Oscar time. :/
Looks like Youth is the biggest snubbee
I never bought its chaces and especially after seeing it.
Haven’t seen it yet myself but This Must Be the Place, after an excellent first half, went completely flooey in the second half and The Great Beauty was a botch from beginning to end, so I can wait patiently until it gets to these parts
Jane Fonda might’ve had a shot at Supporting, but was crowded out by category fraud. Is this a precursor of where Mara and Vikander go on the Oscar ballot? … I can’t believe it, but the Globes might have more integrity for ruling correctly that Mara and Vikander should be in Best Actress.
… And I guess the Broadcast Critics dismissed all the earlier critics’ prizes for Kristin Stewart.
I love Michael Shannon’s Oscar Chances now, With a SAG nom, GG nom, and now a Critics Choice nom I think it makes him a lock for a Oscar Nom!!!
He is such a great actor. Love him. He could definitely go all the way in the toughest field.
The emergence of Michael Shannon as a front runner is the most pleasant surprise of the nominating season
I wouldn’t put it past the Academy to fuck over Shannon like they did Jake G last year. Jake was nominated virtually everywhere except the Oscars. Hopefully that doesn’t happen to Shannon though. *fingers crossed*
Ah yes, the Jake Gyllenhaal omission in 2014, the biggest outrage of last year. Omitting Michael Shannon this year would be just as depressing. I’m still trying to prepare myself for Ian McKellen’s non-nomination.
F#ck the Oscar if they don’t also include “Inside Out” in their BP nominations. I’m speechless that critics, of all people, have left “Inside Out” it in favour of films we wont even remember in a years time. What is the point of expanding the BP category if they wont recognise the most imaginative and best film of the year?
That IS pretty lame, I agree. Inside Out should be there.
Heartbroken that Ian McKellen’s chances are getting slimmer and slimmer
Okay, assuming 1-2 nominees from each category don’t make the Oscar list, here’s what I think WON’T make the cut:
Picture: Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, and/or Sicario
Director: Spielberg
Actor: Depp
Actress: Lawrence or Theron
Supporting Actor: Hardy (or maybe Ruffalo)
Supporting Actress: McAdams
I think Sicario is the weakest for picture, otherwise in agreement.
Bridge doesn’t have much traction outside of Rylance and Brooklyn not much beyond Ronan (and probably Adapted Screenplay). That was my reasoning.
”Brooklyn” will make it to Oscars over some that are current frontrunners…wait and see!! ”Bridge of Spies” will likely be nominated too given Hanks’ and Spielberg’s star power!!
I actually want Bridge to be nominated because it’s one of the best films of the year, but it has very little traction outside of Mark Rylance (and maybe a technical category or two). I’ll be glad if it upsets, though.
The majority of AMPAS voters are OAPs so films that are set in 1950s-1960s Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies (maybe Carol) are likely to resonate. I highly doubt the Academy will ever leave out a legend like Spielberg….he’s so well respected.
I mean, for once I’d say they SHOULD nominate him (especially over Tom McCarthy), but unless he has a late surge courtesy of the DGA I think he’s out.
I’m rather confident Bridge of Spies is in – it made both the NBR and AFI top 10s, is guaranteed a nomination (which looks like it could also be a win), and, with its excellent performance here, getting nommed for both Picture AND Director, I don’t see any reason for it not to get in. Not to mention that it’s Spielberg…
I’m worried about Brooklyn, though. I kind of, sort of, really didn’t like Room, so I hope that is the one that will be left out, somehow, from among the BFCA 10 (along with Sicario, which is a pretty obvious choice), but, based, among other things, on the GG Screenplay nomination (at least 4 of those 5 get in every year), and the fact that I’m assuming Steve Jobs isn’t getting in, it looks stronger than Brooklyn. I hope I’m wrong about that!
Both could be out, now that Star Wars has gotten such great reviews and made the AFI list. It and The Hateful Eight (or something unexpected) could replace them. Also, we could have 8 nominees or less again, which would suck… But, yeah, anyway, Bridge of Spies is definitely looking the strongest of the 3 right now for me, and I’m not too worried about it. It definitely COULD miss, but I doubt it.
You think the AMPAs will go with Charlotte Rampling over Jennifer Lawrence? I mean it would be very deserved but i doubt they will do it.
Thinking the same. At the end of the day it’s down to favouritism, I guess? With the odd exception. Although, Rampling may be a hit with the older AMPAS voters, but who knows…..
Rampling missed out on SAG and GG. She is also not very well known as much as it pains me to say. Looks like an uphill battle for her.
There’s always one who’s an unknown and gets nominated. Regarding GG and SAG: Many actors have gone on to receive nominations without those awards…but who knows….this awards season is filled with uncertainty. Regardless of who seems to be a frontrunner right now that could change.
A never-nominated veteran most of them have known of for decades, in a critically acclaimed film, vs. an actress who’s already been nominated three times and won once before her 25th birthday, in a film whose reception to date is mixed at best?
Yeah, I think they will.
I can see a slight possibility for Charlize Theron making it in Best Actress if the Academy really digs Mad Max. If she did make it, I would guess she would take Jennifer Lawrence’s spot. But, as of writing, this is all wishful thinking.
If she gets in, watch out for Max to win it all. Especially with Spotlight’s track record in the performance categories being spottier than expected.
* Hard to look through the list without thinking: ”Who got the 6th slot (and will get snubbed at the Oscars)?” Most of the categories have 6 nominees, but a few have only 5. Why not make all the categories uniform with 6?
* No Will Smith, Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan or Benicio del Toro. If this is an Oscar precursor of the acting races, will we be seeing an all-white ballot again? Oscar emcee Chris Rock will have a field day with that! … However, the Broadcast Critics does have some diversity in Young Actor/Actress: Abraham Attah, RJ Cyler and Shameik Moore. But there are no girls nominated! … And ”Straight Outta Compton” is up for Best Ensemble.
I’m sure the BFCA think they’re very cool for all the Mad Max nominations (which are nice), but that’s the only interesting thing about their nominations. Everything else is basic. The BFCA was always a joke, but this was such a wasted opportunity.
Wow, when you throw out nominations that have no slot at the Oscars (“best action actor”) Mad Max, Carol, The Martian and Revenant(ick) are in a virtual dead heat! This is exciting! With Mad Max and The Martian in there this year may finally be the year genre pics are going to DO IT!
Go Martian!
Brooklyn, Carol, The Revenant, Room, Sicario and Spotlight! So thrilled that Brooklyn and Sicario made the top ten.
Those feel like the top 6 for best actor.
Thrilled that Rampling made it. If Mara and Vikander stay in supporting, I think she’ll get the nomination. Carey Mulligan is done.
Ahhhh so happy that Tom Hardy and Mark Ruffalo got nominated — finally! Benicio Del Toro is done as well. Still the most unpredictable category.
I never thought Helen Mirren would be so safe. Those feel like the top 6 as well though for supporting actress.
So they loved everything about Mad Max: Fury Road but its score?! I don”t get it. Junkie XL got robbed.
Exactly.
Thoughts of interest:
Sicario love (yay!) but no Del Toro …. bummer.
No Will Smith, Michael Caine, or Ian McKellen (sad times for me).
Yay for Charlotte Rampling.
Yay for Charlize twice!
No Elba. Interesting.
No Elizabeth Banks anywhere. Surprised, really. Thought she had a real shot for an Oscar nom 2 weeks ago. But she seems to not be in the picture.
Carol love everywhere EXCEPT screenplay. Weeeiiiirrrrd.
YAY Mad Max love.
YAY The Revenant love.
YAY for a bit of Brooklyn resurgence.
Trumbo …. well …. I see it later this morning. I’ll see if these crazy noms aren’t so crazy.
Charlize needs to stop being strong and female and start whining about how it was the hardest shoot she’s ever done and she had to sleep in a fake dead cow or something like that.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Change her CD.
Charlize has a CD? Wow, she is multi-talented! Give her the prize. 🙂
definitely, prize for Charlize CD and trash can for your “hardest shoot ever” track. You whine about that more than the person you accuse of whining. 🙂
I keep trying to forget about DiCaprio’s whinging but when there’s a new cover story just today with the “hardest shoot ever” quote he just won’t let me!
yes, because it was one press conference and different trades post the same interview (from the same press conference) with the same quote at different times. hence illusion that someone’s talking about it 24-7. You’ll get tons of that with every movie. Star wars is going to have the same quotes from one press conference published by 10000 trades and sites.
Actually this was a one on one sit down with Wired, in which here are a number of fabulous DiCaprio comments. Not only the repetition of the infamous “hardest shoot ever” line, but also claims that he is frequently in full-on mortal danger. “I nearly died more than once”, apparently including the time “a shark jumped into my cage”. Doubtless one of the famous high-jumping, star-chewing Sharks of Madagascar. There is also a very funny article at GQ (I think) in which he discusses how “incredibly painful” it was – to crawl on the floor!
Classic.
Just give it up already..
I will when DiCap does. 🙂
well, hypothermia is full mortal danger.
They have more categories than the Satellite Awards. The real question is — who DIDN’T get nominated?
I really hoped Tremblay would make Best Supporting Actor… 🙁 what are his odds to make the Oscar cut?
“Best sci-fi/horror film,” lol good one, “critics.”
Yes, the categories make no sense.
these awards are my favorite. They are irrelevant and the ceremony is such trainwreck it must be seen to be believed. It’s too much fun.
agreed!!!
Would be nice if Sasha posted the live streaming link so we could all laugh together in Jan when awards are given.
They are historically a very good predictor for BP.
or anything. LOL last year when they gave Keaton Best Actor and Best Actor in Comedy. Redmyane’s face was priceless.
Sure they’re better for choosing Keaton over Redmayne but it’s very obvious they like to predict what the Oscars would go for. And these are the CRITICS… They should be setting the standards instead of bragging they got the Oscars right.
lets go Theron!!!!!
She’s winning Best Actress in Action. Sealed and delivered.
Leo was robbed for Best Actor In Action.
So basically anyone who made a movie or was in a movie or tv show last year is nominated somewhere? Cool awards show.
Pretty much.
They have to produce the Critics Choice trophies in China because they buy them in bulk.
LMAO!
They will get just one wrong in BP as usual. And it will be Inside Out, which they didn’t have the guts to nominate.
Do your job animated branch! You can have a deserving representant in the BP lineup.
I finally watched it last night and think it’s the most astounding work of art produced by human beings in 2015.
Very nice noms. I hope the Academy spreads the wealth this nicely. Glad the three movies I’m rooting for (Room, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn) are all well represented. Definitely glad to see Spielberg in director.
(Why no Kristen Stewart for supporting actress?)
Jurassic World 5 Nominations. Talk about your high standards
I’m super happy that BDH’s run in high heels resulted in a nom while Vanilly’s whining that she’s a better superhero than Paul Rudd resulted in her snub and his nom. 🙂
They really love JLaw. And Tom Hardy.
Tatiana Maslany fad was one and done.
So who’s odd man/woman out? Since they nominate 6.
Fingers crossed they don’t chicken out with BP and give it to Spotlight even if MMFR wins almost everything else including directors (this has become an annoying fad among critics awards).
Hopefully The Bear gets SFX nom at the Oscars too.
How good is their history with BP prediction? Cos if it is bad let anything else win.
They are irrelevant.
They were 3/3 in the 3 years before Boyhood lost, 4/4 in the 4 years before The Social Network lost, 5/5 in the 5 years before Sideways and Brokeback Mountain lost. So, yeah, definitely not irrelevant… Nowhere near as telling as the guilds, but still a pretty strong precursor. It’s certainly possible that their winner will differ from the Academy’s a second year in a row, but not exactly likely.
I think is safe to say Mad Max will be the movie with more Oscar wins this season
