NOTE: “Roma” is not eligible for Best Picture – Drama. Per the official Globes eligibility rules:
Motion pictures that qualify for the Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language award also qualify for awards in all other motion picture categories except Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Motion Picture – Musical, which are exclusively for English-language motion pictures, and Best Motion Picture – Animated.
If you wrote “Roma” in as “Other” in your predictions, please submit an updated contest form. Thanks!

Wow this is much harder than I imagined. There are certain people that belong in the comedy and musical category and are gonna fuck over a lot of ppl. #rip
Scott Feinberg has a good article on the Globes. Not getting nominated is usually a very bad sign for those on the edge. The supporting categories usually have a late breaker. Plus they go for stars.
Why isn’t Best Song listed? Unless I missed it. Mark me down for “Shallow” all the way.
I’m making some bold predictions, because let’s face it — this is the HFPA so I’m expecting some out-of-left-field choices.

Would love to see Game Night nominated in comedy. It was one of the most satisfying films Ive seen this year. Both McCadams and Plemmons deserve nominations.
So… I bet BKKKM will only be nominated at Screenplay and a huge First Man resurgence…
I predicted the same, as well as a Boy Erased resurgence, though even if that last part happens I don’t particularly predict it means much for Oscar
I don’t think First Man will do well here, unfortunately…
I mean this feels like its the make it or break it point for first man, personally i am hoping for a resurgence but I am slightly skeptical, this seems equally likely to be the beginning of the end for it.
“I mean this feels like its the make it or break it point for first man”
Yup, pretty much…
“personally i am hoping for a resurgence”
Evidently, so am I. 🙂 But I’m clearly quite pessimistic about it. I honestly see two nominations at most (more likely one), and definitely not picture or director – but I’d be ecstatic to be proven wrong!…
Ok so the Martian was comedy/musical but ASIB is a drama.
Mmmm
I was going to say that there is a not-totally-bogus rationale for treating ASIB as a drama with songs rather than a musical. The songs aren’t naturalistic parts of the action itself, as in a traditional musical where the characters just start singing about themselves and everyone treats this as just normal. ASIB is a drama about music stars, and just shows those stars singing when they are performing. So if ASIB were unique, i would say a case can be made that it is not a musical.
But in 1980 Coal Miner’s Daughter won Best Musical/Comedy and in 2004 Ray was nominated in the category. Both were also biopics where the main character sang and performed songs, but they weren’t traditional musicals. Yet the Globe treated them both as musicals.
According to Erik Anderson of AwardsWatch the Globes themselves might be trying to change this so that their comedy/musical categories wouldn’t be considered such a joke
It’s a wise strategy by the Producers to put ASIB in Drama as it can capture the limelight and deny that position to a competitor …Musical would have been an easy win for it
Actually comedy/musical is usually the weak catagory but this year its got all the strong competition… Green Book, The Favourite, Vice, Mary Poppins all look really strong but over in drama there’s really just Beale Street that is real competition (along with Blackkklansman and black panther – neither of which seem like globes films).
I’m also confused with the eligibility of Ballad of Buster Scruggs, shouldn’t it be under TV categories like Limited Series?
If it was a TV series, would it have been allowed to compete – and win Screenplay – in Venice?
I didn’t say it was a “TV Series”. I said “Limited” Series having individual episodes. And a screenplay is basically a script. Since it was in competition in Venice it was very much eligible for the prizes.
The Coens have said that the stories about it being planned in episodic form so that the stories would have been individual episodes was never true, it was always going to be a 2-hour movie
Obviously I haven’t seen it, so it was a 2-hour movie divided into 20+ minutes each vignettes? Sort of a Max Ophüls’ “Le Plaisir” by the way of Guy de Maupassant short stories? Wow, really need to see it asap! I would have preferred that than the typical anthology with stand alone episodes.
What’s interesting is could it also be eligible for TV categories or the Emmys perhaps even if it gets film nods?
Yes, or think of for example Hou Hsiao-hsien’s Three Times (although of course different in tone and not featuring the same actors in each part)
I don’t think it can get Emmy nominations, though, because it played in theatres for a week before its Netflix release
Love Hou and Three ! If that’s the case, I’d definitely see this over the weekend. How it’s playing even in selected cinemas in my country. Bruno Delbonnel is one of my favorite cinematographers and anything he’s done is always worth a trip in cinemas. Looking forward to this!
Not to build extreme expectations, I meant in terms of structure. While I love Ballad, it’s not even anywhere Three Times in terms of quality
Looking at the films eliguble for Comedy/Musical makes me realize what a great year we have for the category. Even stronger than Drama. Hoping Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Lily James could sneak in.
Having Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and The Favourite compete against each other would be very funny.
Trust me, nothing could be funnier than the fact that August: Osage County competed in Comedy/Musical in its year or Bohemian Rhapsody competing in Drama this year, well in fact it’s a Freddie Mercury/Queen SNL long sketch.
God, Sam Rockwell is so sexy in that photo.
Roma is not eligible for Best Picture Drama but I think somehow they’ll make an exception.

For Supporting Actress you mean Regina King, right? (You predict, which I very much hope comes to pass, Regina Hall for Comedy Actress.)
Yes, Regina King lol. Thank you. So many Queens this year!
Screw it. I’m going all in on Paddington 2.
I would love that!
There goes some predictions, as I assumed that three of the films (A Star is Born, BlackKklansman, and Bohemian Rhapsody) would be contenders in the Comedy/Musical category.
I’m just putting ASIB and BR together on one line in ‘Other’ under ‘Comedy/Musical’.
They’ve between announced as dramas though (which the hhpa has not challenged as far as I’m aware) so they can’t be nominated as comedy/musical.
As far as I thought I understood, HFPA can vote them in whatever category they like. Perhaps I’m wrong.
Um that’s how the Oscars work but for he hfpa I’m pretty sure they actually go and decide what will be considered where (or they challenge anything where they don’t agree with the category). For example this year Natalie Portman was being campaigned supporting but the hfpa decided that she’s lead… Or think a couple of years ago when the Martian declared it was a comedy and there was a big thing to see if the hfpa accepted it and they narrowly voted that it would be considered as a comedy before the actual voting for nominations.
I guess my point is that if the HFPA decides that ASIB and Bohemian are not ‘musicals’, then they need, once and for all, to get that word the hell out of the category name.
Haha I don’t disagree, a star is Born especially is completely a musical but I was just pointing out that I think it’s decided that it’s competing as a drama
Ugh, GoldDerby have reported that HFPA accepted the ‘Drama’ idea for ASIB…
OK, so I guess while they’re at it, they going to revoke Marion Cotillard’s win, Jamie Foxx’s win, Angela Basset’s win, the multiple wins for Coal Miner’s Daughter, the multiple wins for Walk The Line – and the five Globes for the previous version of A Star Is Born. (It’s either ironic or just stupid that they actually put Bjork in Drama for Dancer In The Dark.)
Obligatory “Björk should’ve won” comment.
Seconded. Certainly near the top of best acting performances not to have won. She was extraordinary
I second that. Björk should have won Best Actress everywhere
“The Favorite” has just won 10 British Independent Film Awards, with both Colman and Weiz winning in the Actresses category. The film also has an incredible box office considering that it is only in 34 teathers, for 2 weeks, and it reached the incredible mark of 1,6M . I can see a clear scenario at the Oscars where AISB and Roma divide votes and The Favorite wins. The British contingent of the Academy will for sure go all the way for the film (as they did for “Darkest Hour”).
Wouldn’t read too much into that to be honest. BIFA doesn’t impact Oscars. Many films have reached more than $1.6 in the same time-frame and went home empty handed a la Lady Bird which made $1.7.
if there’s a group that’s gonna try the hardest to ignore the gal from Roma lol
Globes really need to do something about these categories

Have you recieved official confirmation that BlacKkKlansman is going to be in drama instead of comedy/musical?
It’d be wholly appropriate to have BlacKkKlansman compete on the comedy cat, I reckon,
Ditto Buster Scruggs.
The most telling thing is Best Actress – Drama is stacked whereas Actress – Comedy/Musical has four likely bets and a fifth slot with no sensible contender to fill.
Lily James will probably get that fifth slot. She got very good reviews for both Mamma Mia 2 and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and she is kinda in that “first Golden Globe nod” phase in her career after not only getting her big break in a huge international hit TV show and HFPA-fave (Downton Abbey) but also pulling off the rare feat of a VERY successful transition to features with four critically well-received Box Office hits (Cinderella, Baby Driver, Mamma Mia 2) including a BP nominee (Darkest Hour) and one rather charming star vehicle (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society).
I agree and she is, but I don’t know if they will bother with that movie given all the musicals this year. And I don’t know that they would pick her even if she’s established by now. Cher I. supporting would be such an old school GG thing though. But I am not predicting it certainly.
For those wondering: Roma is not on the Drama list because foreign language films are not eligible
But it seems they have no Foreign Language category either! I didn’t expect the Hollywood Foreign Press to be biased against foreigners.
Yes they have a Foreign Language Film award. The German film In the Fade won last year.
I don’t know if it has been deliberately excluded from this contest or it is an oversight. Best Song has also been left off.
I say it’s deliberate, as it may be hard to predict that and Best Song.
Roma is still on the Drama list, just in the wrong spot alphabetically.
Is it just me, or are there glitches with these things every year?
Are you sure about that? It’s not on my list. I checked. It is not in Best Picture, but it is present in lower categories.
It would appear that this was fixed during the approximately three hours between our comments.
