Denver, Colo.-The Denver Film Critics Society honored director Alfonso Cuaron’s space-based saga “Gravity” as 2013‘s best movie.
The film snared the coveted Best Picture award as well as honors for Best Director, Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film and Best Score.
“Even critics who thought other films were more deserving of Best Picture status saw how ‘Gravity’ will influence a generation of filmmakers on how to fuse storytelling with special effects,” said DFCS co-director Christian Toto.
“Dallas Buyers Club,” the true story of an AIDS patient who refused to stop looking for a cure, earned two key actors’ awards for Matthew McConaughey (Best Actor) and Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor).
The group’s two new categories – Best Comedy and Best Sci-Fi/Horror Film – gave overdue praise to genres often overlooked during awards season, while the crowd-pleasing “Frozen” earned Best Animated Film and Best Song honors.
The Denver Film Critics Society includes members from across Colorado working for print, radio and web outlets. Final voting was conducted from Jan. 9-12, 2014.

This thread needs a big-ass image and a reworking of the title.
Christophe and filmboymicheal,
The physical transformation is window dressing, very vital window dressing, but still only the surface of things.
MMC conveyed as much in the silent, wordless moments as he did in the ‘showy’ scenes, dialogue.
Its how you watch him realize that he’s really dying – the body language, the eyes. It’s not just physical transformation,….its a truly soulful performance. That’s the only way I can describe it. In small moments, he did what Redford did in an entire film. But with Dallas, it was the range of emotions that trumps it for me.
I’ll take that list, Reno. I like it.
Leo could pose a threat to MM, maybe even more than Redford and Dern. I’d honestly be torn – because both gave such visceral, earthy and un-actorish performances. This might be Leo’s year, and from the looks of it, MM will have more chances.
Bryce,
McConaughey will be picking up his second Globe for True Detective. He was …….magnificent, razor-sharp intensity. This guy is just in another zone than everyone else right now. It’s like he’s locked into something outside himself and running with it.
There is no comparison or analogy to how he’s completely rewritten the script on his career, his art. It just proves that in Hollywood, being on the A-list, its not always about talent. But preconcieved notions, and opportunity.
So i guess this will be the winning acting lineup at the Oscars:
matthew mcconaughey
cate blanchett
jared leto
jennifer lawrence
it became predictable way too early
I hope this is what the Oscars look like. As much as I love “12 Years a Slave,” “Gravity” is just something else entirely.
And McConaughey is simply stunning, as is Leto, in “Dallas Buyers Club.”
I still think gravity will win best picture
Woohoo Denver I like your winners a lot!
Just want to say did anyone see TRUE DETECTIVE? OMG I think SAG actors are going to go nuts over that, add McConaughey’s awesome speech at the globes and their proven love of DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. He’s winning the SAG, man.
Right now I’m predicting these four actors to win the Oscar. Last year it was previously-winning men (DDL and Waltz), this year it’s previously-winning women.
“Matias: People need to understand that MANY critics believe that Jennifer Lawrence gave a better performance than Lupita Nyongo.”
Lupita has five minute scene, speaking only two minutes, so … Jennifer, she stole the movie
filmboymicheal,
right, the Academy loves dramatic physical transformations: Charlize Theron, Cotillard, even Streep and DDL in their latest winning roles, and even Anne “how my god she cut her hair and looks like she pulled her teeth!” Hathaway… examples are just too numerous to mention. So I guess this is a huge advantage for McConaughey in the Oscar race, that went largely unmentioned so far. (Bale also transformed so who knows he might be our 2nd frontrunner?)
I don’t think that it’s ever been a question that McConaughey would win – I think it’s been predestined since the first picture of him emaciated popped up.
Should he win – meh, it wouldn’t be the worse win in Oscar history he is VERY good in the role – but there are better performances this year.
I do think that Leto fully deserves his recognition and I hope that he translates all the success into an oscar.
If DiCaprio earns a nomination, then it will be a very interesting three-way race between him, Ejiofor, and McConaughey. The most interesting of the acting races. It will be interesting even if DiCaprio isn’t nominated.
Wow! Looks like consensus is starting to build at least among press, will the guilds follow suit or go their own way?
MMC should win for being snubbed last year’s two great performances and for two stellar ones this year.
People need to understand that MANY critics believe that Jennifer Lawrence gave a better performance than Lupita Nyongo.
@Alfredo – I was thinking Matthew was going to take it for some time now, but I’m beginning to think that the Leo might overtake him – assuming, of course that he is nominated on Thursday.
Great choices! Last film I have to watch is “Dallas Buyers Club.” Can’t wait for Thursday morning to get here!
Yay! GRAVITY wins.
Sorry for the OT, but FYI: Armond White expelled from critic’s group.

I’m getting the feeling in my stomach that Matthew McConaughey might win the Oscar over Chiwetel Ejiofer
