Good to see a cleancut Johnny Depp with his hair inside a hat for a change. As evidenced below, Russell Crowe’s hair is already acting up a storm, with extensions on loan from Dumbledore.
Deranged hair is a perennial Oscar highlight. Demented chopjobs and lunatic fringe were key components to winning awards this year. But slicked down with Dapper Dan as Dillinger, Depp will need to rely on his maniacal eyes to convey the sense of unhinged madness — a job his hairdo can usually do all on its own. Maybe 2009 will be the year of the crazyass gaze. If so, then it looks from this shot that Johnny has nailed the menacing glare that could bring him his 4th Oscar nom in 7 years.

Thanks , I have recently been searching for information approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the greatest I’ve found out till now. But, what about the conclusion? Are you positive concerning the supply?
Johnny Depp is certainly not a bad actor, but I do not see him handling the nuances of a character like John Dillinger. Dillinger wasn’t “mad” (and Mr Depp seems to default to this tactic all too often when it is not appropriate…see “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”). Dillinger robbed banks at the height of the “Public Enemy” era when breadlines were everyday events. He was young, impulsive and angry after just exiting the penal system. But crazy eyes won’t do the trick, except for the dazed few who like sparklers and loud noises.
“White Heat” with James Cagney would be a much more enjoyable look at a “Public Enemy” style “madman”. If you haven’t seen it, believe me you are in for a ride!

When Depp decided to take PUBLIC ENEMIES as his post-strike Spring 2008 project…I thought it was terrific casting.
There is something perfect about it, with Depp’s melancholic eyes giving off the same sociopathic eyes of danger and thrills that John Dillinger’s mug-shot gives.
So PUBLIC ENEMIES is practically HEAT for the 1930s, umm? Cool.
P.S. – Others, like Alexander, have pimped it already, but I recommend you good folks to check out John Milius’ DILLINGER sometime.
Haha, nice Mike B.
I’m 100% sure he’ll get a nomination. Now, hopefully, this is the type of role the academy is waiting for to give him a win.
Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome last year’s Best Actress Winner for Revolutionary Road, Kate Winslet.
Kate: Here are the nominees.
YADA YADA YADA
Kate: And the Oscar goes to….Johnny Depp in Public Enemies.
