Great choices. I’m more than OK with Leto wining the Oscar. He was the best thing about DBC. As I’ve said before I wish he was more in the film, hell I wish the film was about him.
The title of this film is raising hell with grammar.
I’m pretty happy with my home town’s critics choices! Woohoo:)
The San Francisco film critics circle have announced their nominees. Wows gets nominated for 5! http://sffcc.org/main/2013/12/2013-san-francisco-film-critics-circle-nominees/
@geremy:
The Academy doesn’t have a rule that says that voice performances can’t be nominated, so she’s CAN be nominated. In theory.
But it’s not gonna happen. Andy Serkis was nominated (and won) several critics awards for King Kong and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the studio behind Avatar tried to get Zoe Saldaña nominated as well back then.
The Academy is not ready for it. But IF it’s going to happen one day, it WILL be for a film like “Her”, where it’s not all SFX and animation, but more “dramatic” and “organic” in their eyes.
My bet is there will one day be a voice performance so well-regarded that the Academy will then snub it (as always), forcing themselves to create more animated categories, like “Best Animated or Vocal performance by an Actor or Actress” – but it won’t be for a long time. But as time goes by, films will become more and more animated/computer generated until the point were the Academy will HAVE to create categories that acknowledges that. 🙂
Yes!!! Her cleaning up – it will win best picture (if the Academy knows what’s up, either this or American Hustle).
So happy for Spike Jonze, and Scarlett – I would hope the Academy breaks precedent and finally nominates a voice performance for acting. Her voice helps make the difference in creating the authenticity you may feel in Joaquin’s character falling for her.
Detroit and Chicago… much respect in their film tastes (love the Franco nomination for Spring Breakers).
Is it possible for Scarlett Johansson to get nominated for an Oscar, or is there some rule against it?
I know everyone was freaking out about a similar thing a couple years ago with Andy Serkis in Planet of the Apes, but I can’t remember what the final ruling on an actor’s eligibility is if they do not appear on scene.
I can argue with STORIES WE TELL, which I found despite its subject matter emotionally distancing and ultimately one of the most overrated films of the year.
The year’s Best Documentary is THE ACT OF KILLING.
Larson’s great win is a revelation. She WAS the year’s Best Actress in fact!
Wow wow wow GREAT choices from Detroit. Larson, Stories We Tell, Johansson, Cuaron, McConaughey. Who could argue with these?
Detroit! Who knew?! Even more than the Her win, I love the Johansson win. Ejiofor should have won actor, but I can live with this for the trest
Yes!!!!!!!! Larson wins best actress and best breakthrough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
