Earlier: Both these groups are meeting and voting today. Meeting, voting and I hope they’re fighting too, so then I won’t feel so bad for my own temper flareup in the BOFCA post last night. This group of Boston Critics today are the real Boston Critics not the Boston Online Cyber-Critics we posted yesterday. If you need proof that the Boston group today are the real deal you can look up their reviews (Online) and see for yourself.
I love Boston, these picks confirm it, lol. This makes me :)))) to see TWOWS. I really would like Leo to jump into the BA race. I think a lot of people considering his acting pretty broad, not in a good way, but he really beings soul to all the characters he plays.
S/n: anybody that cites nas as the greatest rapper is cool with me
The Wolf of Wall Street finishes runner-up in five categories!! Still, since Ty Burr says that about a third of the BSFC’s membership didn’t even see the film, this is a strong showing for it indeed.
Yes to the Boston scribes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They alone so far seem to get it.
I was up there with my family last month.
Always loved the place. Ha!
Hey Dean, there is a third very great foreign-language film, (LA GRANDE BELLEZZA) which I saw over the weekend.
You guys should add the stat for Best Foreign Language Film, witch was WADJDA, with BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR the runner up.
What’s the point of “runner up?” Do they get a statuette or certificate?
No, no. I meant that 12 Years and Wolf are gritty, while people may opt out for movies like Saving Mr. Banks, American Hustle or Her.
To me, though, the more likely scenario is the first and it will be a race between the first two. Let’s wait for LA to announce as well.
So 12 Years is now The King’s Speech or Argo? Huh?
I like it when American Hustle is getting denied yet again
Why? You haven’t even seen the movie yet.
Based on these, I’d say they have pretty good pics. At this point early, I like that TWOWS is not taking the big awards just yet, only because it just came out. Also, that way not that many people will start attacking it.
The thing going for The Wolf is that it has very little violence and middle aged men might actually like the nudity aspect of it (you know what I mean) so you never know.
God, I haven’t even seen the movie yet and I want it NOW!
That makes me feel really good, Bryce. I don’t know the similarity between the Oscar Voters and the Boston Voters but if it’s about middle aged white men – Boston is full of those folks. And that’s a great sign.

The vote was close, a few more votes for WOLF would have given it the prize. One third of the Boston critics didn’t see the Scorsese film. Best Actor went down the same way.
I mean it takes a lot to DETHRONE 12 Years a Slave and from everything I’ve heard so far only TWOWS is capable.. But then it depends on “the mood” of the voters. Are they in “Hurt Locker”, “The Departed” or “No Country For Old Men” mood OR are they in “The King’s Speech”, “Argo” mood.
Will SEE!
thats the thing. they really should just start handing out these awards in january that way everyone could contribute fairly… the best picture race isnt really that exciting to me now because i cant even comment on her, american hustle of WOWS just because its still kinda early and they haven even been released wide yet.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Forget Christmas give me award season! So excited for the wind rises and loving the wolf of wall streets runner ups wish everyone in Boston could of seen the movie!
“pissed” is lighthearted I assure you. Nothing against 12 Years a Slave. It’s an amazing film.
I guess 2nd place in all big categories today – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street is excellent.. I like it when American Hustle is getting denied yet again and The WOLF is getting the love for a change. 🙂
I doubt Enough Said would have won screenplay if all the critics had see WOWS. And I bet Leo would have won too.
So that was interesting. Glad for everyone involved. Onward and upward. 🙂
imagine if everyone had seen TWOWS
vily your getting pissed that a movie you haven even seen isnt sweeping awards? that doesnt make any sense lol.
Ty Burr is killing me. TWOWS lost to 12 years on a close vote…. I am ultra-excited and slightly pissed but that’s OK. It’s only the 8th of December! 🙂
Antoinette, just to be clear, a third didn’t see Wolf of Wall Street, which means 2/3 did see it.
Darn It. Marty lost to McQueen and 12 Years wins and TWOWS is probably 2nd there as well. I guess we should be VERY happy with this considering that not everyone saw it in time.
From what I read, passion wins Nominations and Awards and a lot of people are VERY passionalte about TWOWS as well as 12 Years so I will be OK with that if these 2 movies go head to head. (on all categories). I think that I would be OK with that. 12 Years is a masterpiece and TWOWS will be ONE as well.
Good for Steve McQueen I was starting to get worried. But with only a third seeing WOWS and Scorsese was in a run off…. Ohhh…. we definitely have a race on our hands.
Alright then. I think we know what we have to do. It’s Leo campaigning time all the time. Who’s with me? 😀
So is The Wolf of Wall Street actually going to win something or what?
Great to see love for DiCaprio, he is my favorite actor.
I always had this gut feeling that it will come down to Ejiofor vs Leo in the end – but will see. Don’t want to get too excited JUST yet.
I agree on waiting a little longer. Particularly in cities other than L.A. & NYC that often don’t get as early an opportunity to see some of these movies. I know that it wasn’t just WOLF that some of these Boston critics didn’t all get to see.
THE SQUARE (which won the IDA and made the Oscar shortlist this week) seems to be getting overlooked in the announced awards. This begs the question of whether many of these voting critics have even seen it. THE GREAT BEAUTY, as well.
Leonardo Di Caprio is the ONE actor I would give an Oscar even without seeing his performance,, that is how great and consistent he is in every movie he has done so far!
Bryce,
I think so too. That’s OK. I have a very good feeling about this… I don’t know about LA though. If LEO comes in 2nd there as well it will be big as well. But let’s chill for a second. The movie has been screening for only a week so…
Seriously all these awards people should wait until the last week of December to announce. That way the movies have time to get to them.
Vily
Deff. Seems like had they all seen WOLF, DiCaprio would have won
Oh c’mon now there’s 2 threads
Leonardo DiCaprio coming in 2nd after Ejiofor… WOW!!! Considering that not all people saw TWOWS – this is BIG!!!
Oh. I’m actually really happy the way things are turning out for Leo. Gatsby should have been a better movie for him. WOWS could take him all the way maybe. Very psyched. He should have won the whole enchilada for THE DEPARTED.
Thanks Ryan. I guess I was following those other guys since last year. 🙂
So do the winners get like a trophy or a certificate or a plaque or something for critic’s awards? I wanna see the hardware!
Oh wait. Nevermind. Now they’ve tweeted him as best actress. lol Is that a fake account for BSFC?
Antoinette: follow @Tyburr for Boston
hey you guys — hate to complicate things but I’ve split the LA and Boston Critics into 2 posts. It will make more sense this way for the archives, alright?
What is the point of critical acclaim if it isn’t enough to win critic’s awards? Shameful.
I didn’t see ENOUGH SAID. Someone tell me if that’s a deserved award for that performance or if it’s a career thing.
Wow seeing Upstream Color runner upping for editing at LA is really inspiring…though I’m not really surprised. These guys may be my favorite, outside of Chicago, of the critics groups.
June Squibb is coming for all your awards. Old ladies are sneaky.
These are coming up too! Exciting!
https://twitter.com/NYFCO2013
Knew it! Her for LA production design! Next stop it wins, or runner ups, best music. I can see Llewyn Davis winning music.
The other way around in Boston
I know he keeps distracting me too. Jealous of Gainsbourg (not really)
YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Bryce,
the picture you have here beside your comments (I guess Jamie Bell) is soooo distracting… It’s like invading all my mind space with its hot sexiness…
Glenn Whipp, shut your piehole
I’d say it’ll be up to June Squibb and Nyong’o, which would be quite predictable.
So anyone who don’t love 12YAS is a racist now?
One LA Times critic proclaimed HER > 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY a while back, so that should tell you something!
I’m happy for The Wind Rises so far… It’s really a movie to treasure.
LA Times critics who must have everyone else by the balls loved HER
Next up BSA if they give it to Squibb you know its sweeping
NGNG: Johansson
Go J-Law!
runner-up * LOL
HER taking production design is another boost for the film!
It’s LLEWYN for production design!
WOW WOW WOW
reports that HER seems strong in production design (LAFCA)
Awful tweets from the la film critics. Just post the goddamn winners!!! We don’t need the play-by-play of their voting process.
Enough Said is an interesting choice for screenplay but not one I would have vote for. Some holes in that screenplay.
“Probably because you’re blinded by melanin” — Freddy Ardanza
LAFCA beginning to vote!

Updates:
The Wind Rises wins Animated (barely) over Frozen.
The Act of Killing wins Best Documentary.
Enough Said wins screenplay in a close race with The Wolf of Wall Street.
I disagree, I think 12Years a Slave is brilliantly edited.
Well, part of Ty Burr’s whole point in his Tweet about Rush winning for “most editing” is that people so often equate “good” editing with “most” editing–if the editing is fast and hyper and quick, if it’s in service to an action or sci-fi movie, people frequently think it’s “good,” while more carefully and deliberately paced work is considered “weak” editing. It’s similar to how so many people equate Best Sound with “loudest” sound, and how people tend to equate great acting with ACTING–it’s only acting if you can see the sweat, people yelling and screaming and foaming at the mouth and tossing plates around.
Why aren’t you updating the awards
For me anyone who’d say such a thing is not a serious person.
Well Paddy, it’s true. The editing was one of the weakest things about 12 Years. Yesterday in another post, somebody pointed out the names of several films that deserve to win an award for editing, instead of 12 Years.
Act of Killing for documentary
I don’t understand, Freddy. Are you stupid or are you racist (and therefore also stupid)?
The Wind Rises wins again
As long as you can differentiate melanin from quality…….
For me any organization that pick 12YAS for editing is not a serious organization.
For me anyone who’d say such a thing is not a serious person.
Rush winning Editing is something we can agree. For me any organization that pick 12YAS for editing is not a serious organization.
yw!
makes you wonder how many awards has WOLF already lost because many critics missing the screeners! kind of deceptive of its true Oscar chances at this early stage.
The Wolf of Wall Street screened late for the Boston critics and not everyone had a chance to see it.
It is what it is. Also, that doesn’t necessarily spell doom for the movie. It could still win something.
And I must say, Rush seems like a pretty interesting choice for Best Editing, right? I wouldn’t imagine many people saw that coming.
As Ty Burr said when he tweeted the result: Rush won for Most Editing.
https://twitter.com/tyburr
thanks Bryce! always on the ball.
youse other mooks better hurry your butts up if you plan on doing any predicting/guessing.
So Ty Burr has just confessed that The Wolf of Wall Street screened late for the Boston critics and not everyone had a chance to see it. Because, you know, Carrie Underwood was singing the Sound of Music and other distractions.
