Wings of Desire
Looks intriguing, though most of the people in my theatre who saw it before Tropic Thunder gave a “Wtf” reaction and video-game adaptations have hardly been smoking commodities in Hollywood.
And I hate to give credit to Goldstein, but 20th Century Fox is on quite a losing streak when it comes to critical acclaim…..they haven’t released a live-action film that’s clocked in at over 50% on Rotten Tomatoes since Die Hard 4 in June, 2007.
Translation: I ain’t holding my breath for this or City of Ember till they’re screened. For the latter it must be noted that another Fox fantasy property, “Seeker: The Dark is Rising” was released on the same date a year ago.
“Max Payne” is being released close to the date of another similar Fox movie last year…”Hitman!”
Ethan, me too at my DEATH RACE screening, and really what the fucking hell is up with that angel/demon iconography? Jesus, I hope this wasn’t adapted as CONSTANTINE meets DIRTY HARRY or whatever the fuck.
I mean PAYNE as movie material is my sort of junk: Pure simplistic revenge storytelling, which Hollywood fucks up by complicating the pointless shit out of it.
Also, PAYNE was shot by the same asshole who helmed the terrible BEHIND ENEMY LINES.
We’re boned, and twice for Marky Mark after THE HAPPENING.
I, likewise, am not holding my breath.
I think video game films usually get a bad rep the moment they’re announced. No one wants to put faith in them anymore, for understandable reasons. I did play the two Max Payne games on Xbox when they were first released and enjoyed them. I definitely got creeped out and overall I thought the gameplay tied up well with the chaotic storyline.
Seeing how I’m one of those purists who is tempted to boycott “Watchmen” because Alan Moore is, I’m actually surprised that I’m not cocking an eyebrow to this one. There’s an aura to the trailer that is pleasantly reminiscent to its source material. A lot of people will once again complain about the Max Payne’s bullet-time feature to be “a direct Matrix ripoff!!!!” but sometimes it’s nice to put faith in something that seems familiar but is also altogether original…or as original as you can get these days…
The angels and demons and all of that are drug hallucinations brought on by the designer drug Valkyr. Or at least I hope so. They’d have to totally change around the plot of the game to make them actually supernatural. Don’t worry, this isn’t Constantine meets Dirty Harry. Although that actually sounds pretty cool.
Brian….yeah, a “CONSTANTINE meets DIRTY HARRY” does sound good, doesn’t it?
Though if that ever happens, a trigger-happy maverick badass Angel Cop, lets hope the dialogue isn’t as goddamn convulted as CONSTANTINE’s script was.
One of the few video games I remember playing years ago. It certainly captures the game’s look. I, too, hope the monster-looking creatures are just the drug hallucinations. It will be interesting to learn if they kept some of the more surreal/symbolic aspects from the game or if the dumb it down and broaden it for its target’s consumption.
