It’s funny how they nominate Cuaron for writing Gravity yet pass him over for director in favor of Malcolm D. Lee for Best Man Holiday.
Terrence Howard was MUCH better in Winnie Mandela. I wonder who in the NAACP noms these movies?
I know one thing — if Halle Berry wins over Jennifer Hudson, it will be a crime. And a fix.
So I’m assuming all of you have seen “Best Man Holiday”? It’s fluff but it is a better made and more entertaining film than “42”. This a pretty good lineup considering years past.
‘The Best Man Holiday’ for Outstanding Film? This is both hilarious and incredibly sad.
Funny how most of the nominations wouldn’t really surprise any Oscar year. It makes even more obvious how the AMPAS has a really racial factor to be taken into account.
@ Al Robinson: Agree. It definitely shows “favoritism” on the part of the NAACP that 42 wasn’t nominated.
@ Ryan Adams
“On this week’s Oscar Podcast recorded Monday night we were raving about Alfred Woodard’s scene. Talking about how it was one of the most outstanding set pieces in the entire film.”
I have not listened to the podcast yet {truth is I am a little bit behind with these}, but I agree with this. During this scene I had to double take, “Oh that’s Alfre Woodard” – and that is taking into account she is usually nothing less that very good {even in Scrooged :-D}…
No Keith Stanfield?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
These nominations go to show just how far African-Americans in film still have to come. And that’s not a slur on that community, that’s a slur on Hollywood. That The Best Man Holiday can be considered one of the best African-American-orientated films of 2013 would be laughable if it weren’t so dismaying.
And no one ever talks about Alfre Woodard’s one scene in 12 Years a Slave
Yes to this – one scene (pretty much) was good enough for Beatrice Straight in Network and ditto Dench’s one-liners in Shakepeare in Love.
What an outstanding line-up for this group this year. In a way, it’s great that there isn’t room for everybody.
I’m sorry but I don’t see the point in this. This award is just a nonsense in my opinion.
@Zach, Barkhad Abdi is not there maybe because he plays in a “white movie”… I don’t even know what it means…
Terrence Howard was better in Prisoners than either of these movies.
Maybe they wanted to make up for not nominating Terrence Howard’s portrayal of Mandela.
But where is Barkhad Abdi?
The snub of SHORT TERM 12’s Kieth Stanfield in Supporting Actor is inexcusable. Did Terrence Howard really need a second nomination in that category?
Very happy to see criminally underrated performances finally get some recognition. Chadwick Boseman and Nicole Beharie were quite memorable in 42. And Cuba Gooding, Jr. delivered his best performance in years (maybe ever?) in The Butler. And no one ever talks about Alfre Woodard’s one scene in 12 Years a Slave but it’s one of the best of so many powerful bits that make that movie so perfect.
Love the nomination for War Witch too. That movie was up for the Oscar last year and it was actually better than Amour if you can believe it.
On this week’s Oscar Podcast recorded Monday night we were raving about Alfred Woodard’s scene. Talking about how it was one of the most outstanding set pieces in the entire film.
You know what’s funny? I actually have to disagree with the nominations for Outstanding Film.
I’d go:
12 Years a Slave
42
The Butler
Fruitvale Station
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
I don’t care that the “Jackie Robinson movie” was directed by a white guy. That doesn’t matter at all to me. It was a great and entertaining movie.
