Not sure this is Oscar material but Watts will win next year for Diana and then she will be nominated more often, starting with Herzog’sQueen of the Desert. She’s very respected in the industry and she’s working with great auteurs. She just needs to challenge herself more, by doing more comedic work or lighter stuff for example. Take more risks.
Mulholland Dr., King Kong, The Painted Veil, Eastern Promises, Mother & Child, Fair Game : TIME FOR THE SECOND !
Trainspotting, Little Voice, Moulin Rouge, Black Hawk Down, Big Fish, Young Adam, The Ghost Writer, Beginners : WHAT ? STILL NO FIRST ?
This film has BO-potential, with the right marketing it could be THE family drama of the Holiday Season…of course decent reviews and considerable Oscar-buzz (two lead nods ?) wouldn’t hurt, either. I know the trailer gave the big answers (SPOILER yes they all live SPOILER) already, but I’m fairly certain that was a conscious decision : this way WHOLE families can go without risking to take a 12-year old for a film where half the on-screen family dies.
@rufussondheim
Moviegoers can identify with individuals from many different backgrounds, there is usually a grain of common struggles and experiences we all go through.
I do not see how it is easier for most moviegoers to identify with a family who goes across the globe for a vacation, that costs a lot of money.
There have been many successful films that do not need so called star power. Look at the remarkable Slumdog Millionaire which brought to light life in the slums of India without any famous names.
My point is that I feel that movies about the tsunami come from story lines that do not emphasize the individuals who live there and who continue to deal with the ramifications of the disaster.
This family that is portrayed, assuming they are still alive are long gone from the tragedy and back in their quaint comfortable lifestyle.
No hating on the movie itself, Naomi Watts and Ewan are both wonderful and hope this does well regardless but just a point I wanted to get across.
The movie looks great but they showed way too much. I feel that Im already have seen the whole thing!
But oh lord Naomi Watts looks good here! And so does Ewan 😉
No one wants to watch a movie where an entire village gets swept out into the ocean. Imagine the Poseidon Adventure if everyone on the ship died right off the bat. It would be a boring movie. And short.
And let’s face it. We like to watch movies where we can identify with the subjects. It’s easier to identify (at least we like to think so) with a beautiful family with 3 adorable children on a vacation in paradise. We want to see them survive in the face of all odds in what’s probably the worst natural disaster in history.
The western countries of the world could nationalize their film You an industries and we could get all sorts of movies that are more realistic (they may or may not be better) but until then movies that cost this much to make (because of special effects and the stars involved) need to pull in audiences. So they need to appeal to a large number of people.
Now I know nothing I’ve said here is new or profound and I wish it wasn’t that way. But I get tired of people posing such questions. The answers are obvious. You can hate on this movie all you want based on the trailer, but until you see it, you might want to keep an open mind.
However much I do love Naomi Watts, it does call into question that any movie about this very sad tragedy never focuses on the majority of the people who lost their lives and who still today continue to suffer, but instead upon affluent individuals who got to vacation there.
It looks even better than I thought. I think that “Impossible” is a real contender for Best Picture. Totally agree, this is a later entry for nomination. I have a feeling that Academy will like it.
Talking about acting nominations, Naomi has a good change for 2nd overdue nomination, but win… maybe… She looks incredible!
Technical, make-up, cinematography nominations – 100%.
I am not sure if Naomi will get nominated for Oscars this year but boy look at her upcoming features .. Two Mothers.. Diana…. Queen of the Desert … and possibly Blonde … coming one after another .. she has her hands full of attactive projects !! She might just win one in the next two years ..
I saw the trailer, so I saw the whole movie. What is there to see after this trailer? The whole story is there.
It looks well-acted and some shots look great, but I don’t see Oscar anywhere. AICN called this Oscar bait, I wouldn’t.
I keep hearing from people who have seen it that it’s Oscar time for Watts.
My heart skipped a beat when I read that…
Ohhh people are gonna hate this movie, simply because it could be a huge sentimental hit. But it looks at least classy and well done, to me.
This actually gave me goosebumps. But yeah, they showed too much.
This looks to be one of the best films of the year. Both Watts and McGregor could be nomination worthy.
I keep hearing from people who have seen it that it’s Oscar time for Watts.
Wow that was a great movie! I especially loved that ending!! Only two minutes long though?
Can anyone confirm that was Damian Rice singing One?
Looks good but the trailer showed WAY too much. Given that, i think its time to put Naomi Watts into the best actress race. She so overdue but i feel if she is ever going to win for anything, it’s going to be for her Princess Diana movie next year.
Every year there’s a late entry… I’m starting to feel this could be this year’s one.
Oh Naomi…
