(clip at criticalpast.com) Take one, take two, take three…
…and take four: “Thank you very much, Miss Fontaine. Very difficult for me to express myself… Hattie McDaniel made this look so fucking easy last year!”

Wow, I’ve never seen that picture. It’s great. Thanks!

That was also back in the day when the supporting Oscars awarded the character actors for whom the category was clearly established, strictly speaking the actors who would never headline a film, unless for the B unit. You would never have seen Gable, Cooper, Fonda, Crawford, Davis, Cagney et al in the supporting category. They were leading actors and they would win in that category or not at all, and many never did win. Rosalind Russell, Myrna Loy, Cary Grant, Garbo, Kirk Douglas. How times have changed. Now the A List goes to the supporting category without a thought. Whatever works. The statue is the goal.

Is that what the supporting Oscars looked like at that time? A plaque?
kel, The first 8 years of the Oscars there were no separate categories for Supporting Actor or Actress. The category was first awarded in 1935.
From 1935 – 1942, winners in the Supporting categories got a plaque instead of a full-sized real Oscar.
so. That sucks.

Imagine my disappointment when I clicked on the video and there was no take 4.

Bwahaha! I’d make that face too after being made to give an acceptance speech three times.
