I just watched GRAVITY again last night, and while I still love the movie, it’s screenplay IS its weakest link. Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig’s work on FRANCES HA is much more nuanced (and it’s really unfair to dismiss someone as a hipster for thinking so).
bryce, or maybe jonny just doesn’t have an interest in a film like ‘gravity’.hence, a lot of things would be superior.
come on bryce,i know you’ve got to some films this year that have pretty much zero chance of getting an oscar nom and aren’t getting ultra listed in best of polls.
and jonny, feels that way about ‘francis ha’.and i bet there’s some very non hipster types that like this film.ha ha. 🙂
the love ‘francis ha’ is getting in the recent replies is proof a.d. should finally do an alt oscar type thing. you know, that would be cool for those of us that could live life without ‘gravity’. 😉
Hipsterism, brought to you by Urban Outfitters and New Girl.
Gravity has a very thin and none complex screenplay. I really don’t understand how it is nominated over Frances Ha
Because it is superior. But maybe you need to soon-fed quirkiness, themes, and hipsterism so I won’t judge you.
And could someone please nominate of the kids from The Bling Ring in the best young actor categories? They were all really good.
Not really, especially Watson, and the male
The acting nominees couldn’t be more Oscary.
Jack the Giant Slayer? Overlooked? That awful movie? Hello?
And could someone please nominate of the kids from The Bling Ring in the best young actor categories? They were all really good.
Lmao space debris hitting Dr. Stone on Earth would’ve turned Gravity into a comedy classic.
Paddy, every year scripts aren’t qualified for WGA. This is when movies like Avatar, Star Trek ect. get in. If Gravity is eligible for a nomination there than I expect it to get in 100%.
Good to see Kaitlyn Dever getting some love
🙁
sorry!
Babe you know I don’t mind lol! I saw it four times…
It was almost inevitable that Gravity would receive one or two screenplay nominations. Each time I saw the film (because I saw it four times lol), I wondered if it might. And each time, I grew more and more sure that it would. But I’d be surprised if it received many more. It fits right in here, though, with these otherwise equally daft nominations.
How does it end?
Seriously? Try and guess.
I didn’t have to guess! I already knew… >:(
🙁
sorry!
though it would’ve been profound if Gravity ended with a chunk of the space shuttle slamming into Dr Ryan Stone the instant she crawled onto dry land.
#wileEcoyote #beepbeep
@Ryan: *stranded DOCTOR with 6 months of astronaut training…or something like that.
🙂 🙂
The Smurfs 2 for Best Live Action Family Film?
Jack the Giant Slayer gets two nominations while The Wolf of Wall Street gets none?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jordan Vogt-Roberts are among the year’s best breakthrough filmmakers?
Add this to the revoltingly Oscar-baiting love for Saving Mr. Banks and August: Osage County, and you have the season’s worst critic picks yet.
McConaughey is my guess for best actor in this race seeing as two of his films made the final cut for Best Picture.
Gravity has a very thin and none complex screenplay. I really don’t understand how it is nominated over Frances Ha, Before Midnight, or Enough Said.
I also still can’t wrap my head around Robert Redford getting nominated this year. I am a HUGE fan of his but I wasn’t blown away by what he did in the film. Forrest Whitaker and Hugh Jackman gave a towering performances this year.
Did you hear the one about the stranded astronaut who almost lost her will to live?
No.
Well, now you have.
How does it end?
Seriously? Try and guess.
“One Direction” as one of the best “family films”? And Smurfs, Oz and Percy Jackson? That’s hilarious.
I think they totally nailed the top 6 categories, and that their lists will be reflected in the AMPAS nominees in 2014.
Hurray for Saving Mr. Banks! though it was overlooked for best original screenplay…
Hurray for The Great Gatsby! especially Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful!
Boo Hiss! They forgot Ernest and Celestine for Best Animated Film.
Ryan and I had been conversing for a while on whether Gravity would receive any screenplay recognition in the critics phase of this season. Looks like my brethren in Phoenix stepped up to the plate.
Lol at the breakthroughs…June Squibb and Michael B. Jordan have been around for a while and I sure as shit know Jeff Nichols has as well. They also must not have seen Her or Wolf of Wall Street.
