Inspiring story there. What happened after?
Take care!
is there any point in covering the Best Actress race this year? Blanchett surely has it wrapped up. Can you imagine the furore if she lost?

Well, I guess that makes me a LEANFANBOY (as in David), a ZINNEMANNFANBOY (as in Fred) and a VONSTERNBERGFANBOY (as in Joseph).
Whew!
OMG what are you freaking out about? fanboy is a term of endearment. I just said I liked GRAVITY and thought it was a masterpiece. I don’t understand what I’ve done. When did I say Bresson is pedestrian? All the contrary. I’m a total Visconti fanboy and a Bergman fanboy, and a Dreyer fanboy. I mean you were all over LES MIZ if I remember correctly so just chill out.
Is there anyone on these boards or in the world who agrees with your contrarianism?
And now the term “Bresson fanboy?” Right.
Let’s coin these too.
Ozu fanboy
Mizoguchi fanboy
Renoir fanboy.
Fellini fanboy
Antonioni fanboy
Bergman fanboy
Tarkovsky fanboy
Kiarostami fanboy
Chaplin fanboy
Kubrick fanboy
Davies fanboy
Powell and Pressburger fanboy
Sembene fanboy
Kurosawa fanboy
Bunuel fanboy
Visconi fanboy
Hawks fanboy
Vlacil fanboy
Lang fanboy
Fassbinder fanboy
Pasolini fanboy
S. Ray fanboy
Of course all pedestrian artists, that are embraced by “fanboys.”
LOL!!!!!!!
But no we will NOT come to any kind of agreement this year, especially with you all over GRAVITY. Thanks, but no thanks.
And I never said that 12 YEARS A SLAVE was the equal of Bresson’s film, I only used the comparison to make a point. It is merely and only better than any other film released this year. Nothing more.
Well I liken your conclusion to the notion that STAR WARS surpasses Bresson’s AU HASARD BALTHAZAR too.
I fine with comparing STAR WARS with GRAVITY, but I think it’s more of a distant cousin of THIRD ENCOUNTERS. I’m pretty populist and like supposedly dumb stuff, but 12 YEARS is no AU HASARD BALTHAZAR. No, no, no, and I’m not even that big of a Bresson fanboy. I don’t think we’ll ever agree about this so let’s just enjoy the season.
Brie Larson was extraordinary, and if she were to win I’d celebrate!
Brie Larson will win best actress!!!!!!
LAST MINUTE NYFCC PREDICTIONS
Best Picture: 12 Years a Slave
Director: Joel and Ethan Coen
Actress: Cate Blanchett
Actor: Matthew McConaughey
Supp. Actor: Michael Fassbender
Supp. Actress: Oprah Winfrey
Well I liken your conclusion to the notion that STAR WARS surpasses Bresson’s AU HASARD BALTHAZAR too.
But fair enough, opinion and taste are the bottom line. I do think 12 YEARS A SLAVE is a staggering masterpiece, and I do think it will be the film remembered years down the road. The novelty of GRAVITY will waer off the way I see it.
Julian,
I’m all in. I even enjoyed Clooney’s chit chat. That’s why I think he deserves a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
GRAVITY is fine but it does not in any way shape or form approach the emotional resonance and power of 12 YEARS A SLAVE.
It not only approaches it, it surpasses it. It is a vital as cinema can be. But I guess it’s a matter of opinion and sensibilities. I’m not alone in thinking it will be the film that ages the best from 2013. Innovative it is, but that doesn’t begin to make justice all that it is. Like you, I came to the realization 12 YEARS A SLAVE is not a masterpiece, pretty much as I was seeing it for the first time. Cheers.
NEBRASKA is indeed another great film, and I wouldn’t mourn that choice at all Keifer.
Juilen the Emperor: Kubrick’s 2001 is truly “innovative” to my eyes. GRAVITY is fine but it does not in any way shape or form approach the emotional resonance and power of 12 YEARS A SLAVE. No way. And I never meant to pose that GRAVITY was a dumb film, only that choosing it as the Best Picture of 2013 would be a poor choice. 12 YEARS A SLAVE, SHORT TERM 12, BLUE IS A WARMEST COLOR, MY BROTHER THE DEVIL, FRANCES HA and several others all better films.
Eric: Thanks so much for the red carpet. I’ve been around over the last months, but will now be intensifying my involvement. What you say about GRAVITY is dead-on my very good friend!
National Board of Review is well known for making out-of-left-field choices in the past. They don’t always go for what is popular, nor do they follow “like sheep” what is Hollywood commercialized fare.
Having said that, I tend to think we will be surprised by them this year. They are hard to predict, so I will go out on a limb and say they will pick “Nebraska” as Best Film, with Bruce Dern as Best Actor, Cate Blanchett as Best Actress (“Blue Jasmine”), Bobby Canavale (“Blue Jasmine”) and Kristin Scott Thomas (“Only God Forgives”) as Best Supporting, Steve McQueen as Best Director (“12 Years a Slave”) and Woody Allen for Best Screenplay (“Blue Jasmine”).
Sam Juliano,
Could not agree with you more about “Gravity”. It is NOT BP material. The production values are impeccable, bu the script is sub-par.
P.S. great to see you back here
The only marginally dumb thing about Gravity, Sam, is Matt Kowalski’s (Clooney’s) relentless chit-chat in the opening 20 min or so.
I think Gravity would be a brave choice overall. It’s the most innovative piece of American filmmaking in 2013. No contest.
No Bryce, it would NOT be a timeless choice for the New Yorkers to go with GRAVITY.
It would be a DUMB choice, and I have all the confidence they will be doing the right thing with 12 YEARS A SLAVE.
I have no doubt that 12 YEARS A SLAVE will claim the Best Picture and Best Directors prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle, and I’d add the magnificent performance by the lead actor as a near-certainty.
Unlike someone else on this thread I do NOT think GRAVITY deserves to win (I like the film, but I have come to the realization it is no masterpiece remotely).
12 YEARS A SLAVE will win and it deserves to win.
I haven’t a clue as to where the NBR will go, but I will speculate that 12 YEARS A SLAVE will carry the day with them as well.
Ryan,
(I just thought of a (maybe) good joke)
You probably wouldn’t look good in a dress. (Vanna White). 🙂
On second thought, that’s a terrible joke.
You probably wouldn’t look good in a dress.
Now we’ll never know.
Unless I can think of another reason to wear one.
Sure, I’ve made my predictions…. Then why do I feel like I’m going to get burned by either / both:
All Is Lost
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
>.<
And I’ve already had a few good laughs tonight. 🙂 I’ve been watching the 4th season of Glee. 🙂
Oh DAMN! I’m sorry Ryan. I spoiled your game show!! Sorry!! 🙁
LOL. That is too funny!!
I think I figured it out, does it stand for No Guts No Glory?
My prediction for National Board of Review is:
Best Film:
12 Years a Slave
Top Films:
American Hustle
Before Midnight
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Inside Llewyn Davis
Nebraska
Prisoners
Saving Mr. Banks
The Wolf of Wall Street
Damn, I wanted to be Vanna White.
I feel stupid for asking, but what is NGNG? I think I missed something in class earlier.
No G_ _ _ , No G _ _ _ _
NYFCC NGNG – Her
NBR NGNG – Inside Llewyn Davis
I am going to go crazy and say:
NYFCC-Saving Mr. Banks
NBR-Gravity
NYFCC
Will Win: 12 YEARS A SLAVE (this is going to get old fast)
Should Win: GRAVITY
NGNG: GRAVITY
NBR
Will Win: GRAVITY
It’s not too late for NYFCC to realize they can again make history and elect GRAVITY. It would be a timeless choice in the best tradition of ON THE WATERFRONT(’54), A CLOCKWORK ORANGE(’71), NASHVILLE(’75), GOODFELLAS(’90) MULHOLLAND DRIVE(’01) and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN(’07) !!!
Don’t let us down!!! They foul with it!!!
