In just a few days, the New York Film Critics will announce first (Tuesday, December 3) and a day after that, the National Board of Review (Dec. 4). New York recently pushed their date to be before the National Board of Review and yes, that means they’re FIRST, but it also means that they, like the NBR, can maybe push a contender into the race but they’re so early in the race that they often don’t paint an accurate picture of where the buzz is going to go. Then on Dec. 8, Los Angeles will come along and their picks will react to what’s already been announced.
The critics groups tend to influence Best Picture, Director, Best Actor and Best Actress most. The rest of the categories, especially documentary and animated feature, tend to lessen in terms of impact. But really, we’re following Best Picture when we look at these early awards.
—->CONTEST: PREDICT THE NEW YORK FILM CRITICS AWARDS
First up, the New York Film Critics – what will they choose? Last year it was Zero Dark Thirty (nominated) for Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis (won Oscar) for Actor, Rachel Weisz for Deep Blue Sea (not nominated for the Oscar). Year before it was The Artist (won Best Picture), Streep for the Iron Lady (who won the Oscar), and Brad Pitt for Moneyball (nominated). Year before that, The Social Network (nominated), Annette Bening (nominated), and Colin Firth (won Oscar). Since it’s the first word on the critics awards, their choice will have a bigger impact. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re picking the winner or starting what will end up being a consensus. Picking The Artist was less meaningful than picking Streep for the Iron Lady, for instance. The Artist won everything but Streep had a formidable challenger in frontrunner Viola Davis.
The National Board of Review is a little less formal than the New York Film Critics. They are better at pushing in an unlikely contender than they are confirming or starting the consensus. They rarely go with the flow. They did agree with New York in picking Zero Dark Thirty, which set that film up early as the one to beat. But the year before they went with Hugo rather than The Artist.
—->CONTEST: PREDICT THE NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW
Our predictions after the jump.
New York Film Critics – it should be noted that they have an odd way of voting. They do run-offs, which I’ve never completely understood. But they always come out of voting saying “such and such won the first round then lost in the last round.” Nonetheless, here is how I think it might go.

NYFCC – 12 YEARS A SLAVE
NBR – SAVING MR. BANKS. No guts no glory!
@ Scott (the other one)
It’s all opinion in the end. I for one don’t see the comparison of 12 Years a Slave being the slavery equivalent of Schindler’s List. It’s a fine film and one that should get a lot of awards attention, but it isn’t my favorite film of the year. That would be Gravity. It blowed me away. Sorry it didn’t work for you and I’m sure it doesn’t work for everyone, but it was the only film I saw twice in theaters and I can’t wait to see it again.
Is Cate Blanchett really a lock fro Best Actress? Yes she was phenomenal, but if Gravity is really going to be in the contest for Best Picture, Sandra really needs to be considered. I can’t believe I’m even saying this since I don’t really care for her in anything.
National Board of Review will throw best original or adapted screenplay to an out there choice, or kick start an indie darling for writing. Out there/sole awards for writing the NBR gave out were Stranger Than Fiction, Gran Torino and Buried won original since 2000 and The Painted Veil won for adapted. Also, for original winners include Lars and the Real Girl, 50/50, Looper, In America, Eternal Sunshine and The Squid and the Whale. I would say Her could win original and then Dallas Buyers Club or Short Term 12 (or is it original?) could win adapted.
Yeah, I don’t think Sean Penn deserved either of his Oscars. He overdoes everything.
Aren’t the Gotham Awards today? Do they announce the winners ahead of time?
@ Bryce,
I’ve always, always HATED Sean Penn’s performance for the SAME REASON – he plays Harvey Milk as a retard, the mannerism is so out there and he doesn’t capture Harvey’s charisma. It’s insulting.
@ Tero,
We don’t know if they have a problem picking one of the trio. I doubt they would. At this point I’d say Ejiofor would win, with Redford, Bruce Dern and maybe McConaughey nominated. Number five is up in the air. It could be Leo DiCaprio (but I doubt it). It could be Whitaker (Harvey, a likable actor etc etc), it could be even somebody like Mads Mikkelsen (if critics push him).
And I guess they went back up with the length? It’s 179mins now and longest Scorsese film.
WOLF has become a serious threat for major awards. If it is on par with Goodfellas or close, Scorsese might win his second BD.
After Gravity, this has been my 2nd most anticipated film and after hearing about the 165min length, I’m glad it’s not Casino (which I like very much also). If DiCaprio is at his best and gets nominated, don’t count out the win. They already have a problem choosing between the trio of Ejiofor-Redford-McConaughey. They might go for the big film, plus Leo is likely to win it someday anyway and why not from a Scorsese collaboration. What is Editing like this year? Schoonmaker to get 4th?
To me, the question is, HOW crazy this film is? Too much for Academy?
OT:
Just had gay movie night with the fam, and I don’t recommend anyone to watch THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK and MILK back to back. It’ll totally ruin the latter. Harvey Milk (the real one) was sooo damn charismatic, had a true politician/orator voice, and exuded so much intelligence that Sean Penn’s performance decisions leave you scratching your head. He goes full retard man, just one notch below I AM SAM. Strong direction by Van Sant. Supporting cast makes it worth it.
Up next, after finding out Bertolucci did a thorough de-gayification of the script, I’ll be revisiting THE DREAMERS. I remember loving it, but I saw it a long time ago. We’ll see. I cannot bare the though of dismissing two Bertolucci’s, and no, I freaking love NOVECENTO.

Viola Davis never was the frontrunner. Meryl Strepp won the NYFC, GG (Drama) and the BAFTA. The only thing of importance that she lost was the SAG which she has won two years before.
Lou Lumenick who -I guess- votes in the NYFCC is already pissed at reactions and predicts WOLF is “anticlimactic”
https://twitter.com/LouLumenick/statuses/407269670069075968
My hunch is he’s not alone. So Scorsese’s film will probably not be helped by critic awards. Unfortunate envious attitudes!
When and if it does not (and I don’t have high hopes) then we’ll have confirmation of its relative weakness.
I’m much more confident at this point than ever that the script will get both WGA and Academy Award nominations.
NBR is a lot more likely not to pick 12 Years than NY. NBR hasn’t gone with a real independent film since, I believe, 1996 (Shine), so if they go with 12 Years it’s proof of its absolute frontrunner status this season.
OTOH, if NYFFC doesn’t go with 12 Years it shows it’s not so invincible. It seems to fit right in their wheelhouse.
@ jorge
my friend how are u 🙂
Sandra has no chance to win. She won before and I think it’s Cate’s time.
I really don’t get the Sandra Bullock love. Her performance was average at best. Blanchett should take the Oscar easily, but I believe that critics could honor Adele or Berenice or maybe even Julie Delpy. Dench won’t be a factor with critics. She has been a LAFCA runner-up once (ironically it was for Mrs. Henderson Presents), but it happened mostly due to the year being insanely weak and LAFCA voters wanted to avoid voting for Witherspoon’s unworthy performance.
On Picture: I wonder what would happen if 12 Years and Gravity split the vote. I’ve read thousand of times that this is how United 93, Quiz Show, Mulholland Drive and a lot of other winners were selected over the years (as a compromise choice). What would the compromise choice be? Blue is the Warmest Color? When was the last time they selected a foreign language film? You have to go 1974 to find a foreign language film that won. LA is more into foreign films and the NSFC is probably the one that’s most likely to pick the film. But NY could look elsewhere – Captain Phillips? Nebraska? Could something like Mud happen? I doubt it. Before Midnight? They wouldn’t dare. The NYFCC of the past would have, but now they want to really go with the Oscars. So I guess that in the end they’ll pick 12 YEARS A SLAVE.
I simply do not understand the praise that has been heaped on Gravity.
I went with four other people, to an IMAX screening, and all of us just shrugged our shoulders afterwards and said — okay, that was reasonably entertaining, but what’s the big deal?
Last night I was at a dinner party with eight people, and every person at the table said the same thing.
So that is a total of 12 people I know, men, women, gay, straight, nerds, intellectuals, trash-lovers, and one kid, and not one of us thought that Gravity was anything special, although we all acknowledged that the special effects are cool.
I have yet to meet a person who thought that it was anything but a fun, well done piece of sci-fi junk. Honestly, why are people raving about this? Can someone explain the critical hosannas? It is completely baffling to me.
We wait to see if Gravity receives a screenplay nomination from any major group. When and if it does not (and I don’t have high hopes) then we’ll have confirmation of its relative weakness.
All Is Lost seems to understand this much better: When you don’t have anyone to talk to and nothing much to say, Shut up.
I have no real idea what these people will do but my vibes are telling me New York will not pick 12 YEARS A SLAVE. They should want to make a statement. That’s not a statement.
Have they seen everything then?
sandra will win one of these critics awards!! mark my words!!
alper why u are not rooting for sandra this year???
Sasha, did you mean to omit a guess for NBR’s best supporting actress?
I absolutely do not understand the critical praise for 12 Years A Slave, or the way that the word “masterpiece” is being thrown so casually. It’s poorly edited film, among other things. If there truly is a “duopoly” between that film and Gravity, then it only shows that this is actually a lackluster year for film.
12 years a Slave is going to sweep the critics awards beginning with NYFCC. It’s reviews are as rapturous, if not moreso, than those of Zero Dark Thirty. LAFCC will likely be one of the few critics groups to challenge the growing consensus. While I have not seen the movie, I am a fan of Steve McQueen and hope for the best. Hopefully Before Midnight gets the recognition it deserves.
Bryce,
It’s all good. Let’s hope for the best I suppose. I agree that we shouldn’t get too excited but going by the initial reactions, it’s VERY hard not to get excited. Will see! ;-))))
Cheers to you too! 🙂
Villy
My calling you that was in response to your first message, you saying people are “off-the ball”. People hate being told what to like. Also to dispose people to have their mind-blown is often counterproductive. Actually, I share your enthusiasm, still, that response was unjustified on my part so I apologize. By the way, if the reactions are to be believed, there will no be a bigger champion of Scorsese than me. So that’s more or less where I was coming from. Cheers.

NBR also left Black Swan off their 2010 top 10 list in favor of Hereafter and Shutter Island and gave the top film prize to The King’s Speech over The Social Network that year. If anyone goes for Wolf in a big way, it would be NBR, as they love big Hollywood directors and films and there aren’t too many of them this year (they gave Hugo their top prize).
I expect 12 YRS and Steve McQueen sweep whatever on the table starting with the NYCC and NBR. Ejiofor is the favorite imho but anything (Redford, McConaughey) can happen.
Cate Blanchett is entering the award season as the early favorite but we can expect some surprises from some critics groups (Exarchopoulos).
Bryce,
I will try to keep this civil and abstain from calling you names. Nevertheless, it is clear in your “turd” suspicions that you are clearly not a fan and have an agenda against the film. Unfortunately, and as time passes, people will realize the that if there is any movie that can break the 12 Years a Slave/ Gravity duopoly, it is most certainly The Wolf of Wall Street. The fun made by people “who haven’t seen the film” is laughable precisely, because they have NOT see it. I am just going by people who have seen it. The initial reactions are certainly more positive than those for American Hustle.
Will see how today’s screenings in NYC go but a movie about Wall Street screening in New York – I kinda have a good feeling there. So, hold your horses, relax and enjoy the show!
Btw I have seen both Gravity and 12 Years, and although they are great movies it’s too early to make a call…
Vily,
I think you’re doing a disservice to the film you imbecile. All those SAG reactions have already been made fun of (by people who haven’t seen the film)

You guys are completely off the ball! The Wolf of Wall Street is the best movie of the year. If there were any doubters, Marty and Leo will put you to shame. How dare you question a master’s work?!
Looking forward to the start of Cate’s sweep.
I’m guessing the NBR will go with Chiwetel Ejiofor.
And, by the way, I thought Viola Davis was the frontrunner because of her SAG win.

If the New York Film Critics have any balls they will reward Before Midnight for something other than screenplay. Unfortunately, they will probably reward the inferior Blue Jasmine instead. Ball-less.
“They like to reward flawless ensembles. I know a lot of people who wouldn’t vote for Les Miz last year just because of Russell Crowe.”
Yet Les Mis ended up winning the NBR Best Cast award last year… 🙂
I think Hustle is the favorite for any ensemble award this season based on star power alone, including the NBR. Certainly the SAG. Definitely helps that O. Russell has had a very hot hand with his actors since 2010.
I can’t see American Hustle taking ensemble over 12 Years a Slave or Saving Mr. Banks. Especially with the black hole that is Amy Adams and the Disappearing Accent sticking out like a sore thumb. They like to reward flawless ensembles. I know a lot of people who wouldn’t vote for Les Miz last year just because of Russell Crowe.
I will forever be grateful to NBR for the only precursor to have balls recognizing Gong Li’s underrated performance in “Memoirs of a Geisha”.
Anyway, I think both NYFCC and NBR will go for “12 Years a Slave” this year with NBR having “Gravity” for alternative as their famous “unlikely pick”.
Nah. Streep was the front-runner for Iron Lady.
I really hope the NBR doesn’t give Gravity Best Picture, but only because their BP winner hardly ever goes on to win the Oscar. I’m already concerned enough about its chances anyway given that it’s not an ensemble film, and as most of us know, the eventual Best Picture winner is almost always one of the five nominees for SAG’s Best Ensemble award (the one exception being the first year the award was given). I’m going to be watching films straight through next week for awards purposes, so perhaps Gravity won’t be my final answer, but I find it hard to believe anything will be better.
Personally, I’m hoping that they choose 12 Years a Slave (a good, but overrated film) so that other films will have a chance later on.
Evelyn, the NBR did in fact award DDL supporting actor in 1985 for My Beautiful Laundrette. But yeah, he’s been totally ignored since then.
I’m not all that admiring of the NBR. Didn’t they infamously place THE BUCKET LIST in their Top Ten, while ignoring THERE WILL BE BLOOD? Also, I don’t think they have ever awarded DDL in all his long and amazing career. I will be perfectly happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.
JJ, are you perhaps thinking about another film? Into the Wild didn’t win the NBR in 2007 – No Country for Old Men did. It did place in the Top 10 and Emile Hirsch won a breakthrough award, though.
Fun fact: in 2009, Steve McQueen won the Best First Feature award at the NYFCC. I wonder who’ll get it this time? My guess is either Ryan Coogler for Fruitvale Station or Lake Bell for In a World.
I’ll never forget the year the NBR awarded the beautiful and powerful INTO THE WILD best pic. Then the Academy dropped the ball – apparently because all of the narcissistic, industry Hollywood parents were very uncomfortable with the suggestion that bad parenting and a volatile household could have an effect on a child. See also the snubbing of The Ice Storm for similar Oscar snubbery.
Such an exciting time! But I just don’t get the buzz for Carey Mulligan in Inside Llewyn Davis. She hardly had anything to do and the role wasn’t a stretch. Is that really the best on offer? Compare that to Lea Seydoux in ‘Blue is the Warmest Colour’. No contest.

Question: So is it official that both these groups will get to see WOLF before they vote? (like, tomorrow or Monday) I read somewhere it’ll be screened for guilds this weekend, and press will have to wait until next Friday, which of course is “suspicious” and a “clear sign” that Paramount is hiding a turd.
