A new teaser for JC Chandor’s A Most Violent Year has just been sent out. Oscar Isaac, Jessica Chastain star. The movie, judging from the trailer, looks top notch, in keeping with the dramatically diverse palate of the young Mr. Chandor, who had already made Margin Call and All is Lost. The film will be given a limited release date of December 31 (hopefully screening before that) and then opening in 2015, a press release just announced.

SYNOPSIS:
Set during the winter of 1981 — statistically one of the most crime-ridden of New York City’s history — A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a drama following the lives of an immigrant and his family as they attempt to capitalize on the American Dream, while the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built. Running time: 110 minutes. MPAA Rating: TBD.
Here is the trailer.

So bullish of A24 to think they can hold this off until so late, tho the AFI Fest slot they’ve booked for it is a good get.
Since I read that Oscar Issac would replace Javier Bardem in this I was anxious to see A Most Violent Year, and although this is only a teaser, my expectations are higher than ever. The acting and chemistry between Oscar and Jessica Chastain looks fucking amazing. I can’t wait!
Thanks for posting this. This film looks so terrific. Can I love Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain anymore right now? I just HATE these sorts of release patterns and I’m afraid that, even if it is really good, it could get lost in the shuffle.
Looks fantastic, and I’m not just referring to Chastain *rimshot*
…although the “Golden Globe Nominee” attached to Isaac’s name is a little depressing…
Jessica Chastain. So hot right now.
Now that I finally saw the trailer I will just reaffirm what I said earlier, J.C. Chandor is the most diverse and exciting director working today.
And Isaacs looks great, too.
Well, Chastain will get nominated for this well before Miss Julie or Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (it’s an AMPAS “thing” that’s “telling” me that this is the role they’ll like). I didn’t know about the Interstellar bit, though, until now. We shall see.
This jumped to the top of my must see list along with Gone Girl and Into the Woods and Interstellar. Wow
Big Eyes trailer has dropped: https://movies.yahoo.com/video/big-eyes-trailer-151825125.html
Yup – this is the one I’m waiting for.
^^if it looks and sounds like a troll…
Chandor is the luckiest director to come down the pike in years. He comes from nowhere and gets an oscar nomination for a mediocre movie in margin call and then every critic around buys whatever he’s selling with that boring silent redford movie. Even with Chastain and Isaac looking ok this looks like smoke and mirrors to hide mediocre directing and writing. When will someone wake up that this guy is just making it up as he goes along.
This trailer and announcement just sent a SERIOUS blow to its likeness competitors–Gone Girl and Foxcatcher. Based on the trailer alone, I see A Most Violent Year competing in Picture, Director, Actor, Actress (or Supporting, depending), Supporting Actor (depending on Brooks’ screen time and impact), Cinematography (!!!!!!!! I adore Bradford Young’s work), Score (!!!!!!!!!! how gorgeous was that sound, and there were a lot of people shocked Ebert didn’t get an Oscar nom for All Is Lost, plus he won the Globe for it so like…….), Screenplay (he’s been there before) and Editing. That’s a ton of nominations it could make a case for.
There really is no bounds for how excited I am that A24 has finally put this into play for the current year. Chandor’s work has been so, so, so, soooooooooo solid.
Chastain looks fierce and relentless. I am hoping they campaign her in Supporting for this role. But I have heard she packs an emotional punch in Interstellar, and the studio doesn’t want conflicting nominations. Tapley has confirmed her as lead for this film, so I hope this gets sorted/figured out.
Haha!! Bryce. You make it sound like we’re living in Sodom and Gomorrah. 🙂
You guys think this will touch upon the imminent reckoning the nation is about to face because of our ways?
This film looks like serious business. Probably has to say profound things about our decadent times and state of affairs and will leave us in a solemn mood when we leave the theater, make us head for Caribou, buy terrible coffee and try to dissect what we just saw with our accomplices, after probably not agreeing about its meaning since it seemed to leave everyone off the hook, we’ll get into our cars and slip into the night anticipating the decades of debate to come.
Chandor may be the most diverse and exciting director working today.
Yep.
Issac was in my favorite film of 2011 and 2013. Wonder if that will continue. I like how Chandor hasn’t made the same film twice.
All right, I’m in.
J.C Chandor is one of my favorite new directors. Both “Margin Call” and “All is Lost” are modern-masterpieces. I CANNOT wait to see this.
