Both Julia Roberts and Viola Davis are endlessly watchable stars who command the screen like few others can. Since I was not one of the lucky ones invited to see Widows when it screened here in LA, I must rely only on what people on Twitter are saying about Davis — but I know her work and I know how mesmerizing she is. I have, however, seen Ben is Back and can validate the raves for Roberts’ performance getting raves in Toronto.
Julia Roberts has been acting a long time. She went from effervescent “it” girl, to “trying to prove herself a serious actress,” to winning an Oscar, to raising a family, doing some comedy here and there. But it’s been a while since we’ve seen this much of her in a movie. In Ben is Back Roberts is in almost every shot. The camera is pinned to her the entire time. She mostly tells this story solo of a mother fighting to keep her son alive on one Christmas Eve.
The movie stops just short of putting blame on the mother for problems faced by her son(an excellent Lucas Hedges). That would be the simplistic explanation for his addiction, rather than what the movie depicts — which is, how can kids resist it if drugs are being handed out like candy by doctors who get kickbacks from drug companies, pharmacies who look the other way, and whole towns that have been hit with an opioid crisis they can’t manage.
Roberts is simply brilliant, taking us inside her conflicting waves of emotion in trying to manage her son. Is she tough enough? Loving enough? She has three other children who also need her attention, not to mention a husband (Courtney B. Vance — who could have been given a lot more to do, ditto Kathryn Newton as her daughter). But she knows this is probably it for her son. He is either going to survive the night or not. He is going to get sober or not. If you’ve ever been close to, or loved an addict you know that they have only two options. Get sober or die.
According to the New York Times, 72,000 people died from overdosing on opioids last year. Writer/Director Peter Hedges wants people to know that a large part of the blame has to be laid at the feet of the drug companies who continue to prescribe pain killers for people who do not need them. He also does a good job showing how your whole life can be a spider’s web that keeps you trapped in a cycle you can’t break free from. Everywhere you go, everyone you know are all somehow connected to that world. Lucas Hedges spends much of the film struggling with both his desire to escape and take drugs and his desire to come back to the world of the living, with his mother and his beloved dog.
Can Julia Roberts break through and become one of the nominated five? Can Viola Davis, who has received raves for her performance in Widows? Well, let’s look at the Best Actress race so far.
Who seems most solid for a nomination right now?
The strongest contenders right now seem to be:
Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Nicole Kidman, Destroyer
Viola Davis, Widows
Glenn Close, The Wife
Julia Roberts, or Olivia Colman for The Favourite, or Yalitza Aparicio for Roma are going to have to knock out one of more of these five.
And all of this before we even get to the performances no one has yet seen, like Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Kiki Layne in If Beale Street Could Talk, Saoirse Ronan in Mary Queen of Scots…
At this point, I suppose it might come down to three things. 1) How much walking the line and kissing babies are they going to do, and 2) how aggressive will the publicists be, and 3) which, if any, will the critics push as they are wont to do at times? Remember their efforts for Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Rampling, etc.
The critics will need someone they feel cool about pushing. Thus, likely someone who is otherwise being “ignored.” Who will that be? It’s hard to say.
I guess, if I had to pick right now, I’d go with:
- Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
- Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me
- Viola Davis, Widows
- Saoirse Ronan, Mary Queen of Scots
- Julia Roberts, Ben is Back
Why Julia over everyone else? Well, for one thing, it’s just a guess. For another thing, she delivers the goods and then some, for a third thing — girlfriend’s got a lot of friends in town. She’s plugged into the George Clooney/Brad Pitt/Matt Damon/Tom Hanks/Mike Nichols faction of the Hollywood tribe. So yeah.
I tink one or two of the ladies in The Favourite will sneak in…Colman looks like a good bet coming off her Volpi win at Venice…It might be The Hour situation w two going Lead & one, Supp…Metink Colman & Stone in Lead & Weisz in Supp. Of cos its still fluid now & they cld switch it again
& I will never discount Glenn Close, w The Wife doing brisk biz now and she’s getting the best reviews of her career in 20++ yrs
Actress in a LEADING role
Olivia Colman
Lady Gaga
Melissa McCarthy
Natalie Portman
Julia Roberts
Actress in a Supporting Role
Nicole Kidman
Emma Stone
Rachel Weisz
Letitia Wright
Michelle Yeoh
I think it is out of question that Julia Roberts will win another Oscar eventually. By the way, I’m already thinking 2019’s Supporting Actress winner is going to be Anna Paquin for the next Scorsese film… a 2nd for her, too… which judging from the “Margaret” reviews, is coming late and will come in the wrong cathegory.
It’s worthwhile noting that after a long drought, Julia got a nomination for August Osage County which wasn’t that long ago. She’s still liked. She could get there.
I just hope Glenn Close gets there in the end.
What are people basing their prediction of Emily Blunt for Mary Poppins Returns? Don’t get me wrong – I hope the picture is great and that Blunt is fantastic in it… I just didn’t know if there has been advance word of her performance, or of the movie in general… that’s all.
It’s just a hunch. Could be completely wrong. But I think the movie will be huge. I think she’ll be great. She got great reviews for AQP earlier this year; wind in her sails. She’s never been nommed. And I just feel like she could be a “thing” late in the game.
I’m hopeful as well. I love her, and I think this is a perfect vehicle for her talents. She’s certainly a contender for a Musical/Comedy GG which may help her chances.
I go back and forth with Julia, sometimes I feel like she doesn’t break through her own A-lister facade. But then there are times she’s brilliant, and demonstrates why she’s one of the greats of our time (considering both her commercial and critical success). I’d love to see her get in, just to remind everyone how genuinely good she is.
Lead actress and lead actor seem to be shaping up now.
But what about supporting??
Supporting Actor:
Chalamet
Elliott
Grant
James – or is he lead?
Driver
Hedges in Ben is Back? Or is he lead?
Supporting Actress:
Stone
Weisz
Kidman
Foy
King
Any other contenders so far?
Hmmm even though I needed a shower after watching hereditary I just can’t seem to count Toni Collette out. It just doesn’t seem right. Pretty sure she’ll rack up a lot of critics awards along with Theron at the very least.
I’m still counting Toni Collette in. Hope she gets a deserved a nod.
Thinking this, at the moment:
-Glenn Close will be the GG/BFCA/SAG/AMPAS nom that doesn’t get too many critics’ mentions. Possible win eventually.
-Lady Gaga looks pretty undeniable for a nom at this point.
-Melissa McCarthy is looking good.
-Viola Davis might make the cut because everyone loves her.
-Annnnd I’ll go Emily Blunt as the “late” entry because everyone loves her and probably wants to give her a nom, finally.
So, I see the likes of Julia Roberts, Kidman (maybe in Supporting for Boy Erased), Aparicion, Colman (if she’s IN Supporting, and could win there), and Stone missing. Overall, I feel like The Favourite might make a splash here & there, but not be the juggernaut some are thinking.
Gaga
Colman
McCarthy
Davis
+ one of either:
Roberts
Blunt
Kidman
– Lady Gaga: she is going to be one of the phenomenons of the year in ‘A Star is Born’, she is loved by the Academy (look at her impressive medley of ‘The Sound of Music) and her win would be what the Academy needs to improve their audiences on Oscar’s night. She could easily win à la Cher or Barbra Streisand.
-Glenn Close: I don’t think she will win in a year of such strong performances. She hasn’t done anything of interest (in movies) since the early 90s, she’s been out from the Hollywood spotlight for centuries and I think she is respected by the industry, but not loved enough. In addition to that, ‘The Wife’ looks like a minor film. I don’t think she will be nominated, but if it happens, her case could be similar to Charlotte Rampling for ’45 years’.
– Melissa McCarthy: comedy actress in her first dramatic role. I think she will be nominated.
– Viola Davis: everybody loves her and she is rooting for a Best Actress Oscar after the category fraud in ‘Fences’
– Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman: both deserve, sooner or later, their second Oscar.
I think we are down to 18.
TOP CONTENDERS ATM
1. GLENN CLOSE (The Wife) – I refuse to believe she won’t go all the way.
2. LADY GAGA (A Star Is Born) – Brilliant vocals for sure, acting-wise we’ll see.
3. JULIA ROBERTS (Ben is Back) – Is the film strong enough to support her acclaimed turn?
4. NICOLE KIDMAN (Destroyer) – Ditto.
5. NATALIE PORTMAN (Vox Lux) – I think this may be the big surprise of the season.
6. EMMA STONE (The Favourite) – Assuming Colman goes all the way in supporting.
7. MELISSA MCCARTHY (Can You Ever Forgive Me) – Low-key pic facing flashy af competition.
8. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY (Colette) – Very timely, she is also overdue for a second lead nod.
9. VIOLA DAVIS (Widows) – Will the Academy respond to this perf in a genre pic ?
10. YALITZA APARICIOIN (Roma) – If critics groups lift her up, it COULD happen.
STILL TO BE SEEN
SAOIRSE RONAN (Mary Queen of Scots) – Even if the film disappoints, she won’t.
EMILY BLUNT (Mary Poppins Returns) – Long overdue first nomination ?
FELICITY JONES (On the Basis of Sex) – RBG. Nuff said.
AMY ADAMS (Backseat) – Strikes me as a supporting part. So did American Hustle though.
UNDER THE RADAR
CHARLIZE THERON (Tully) – Very deserving. VERY competitive year.
ELSIE FISHER (Eighth Grade) – Depends on how much love she gets from critics groups.
AMANDLA STENBERG (The Hate U Give OR Where Hands Touch) – Strong notices for both.
KIKI LAYNE (If Beale Street Could Talk) – Big breakthrough turn for sure.
OTHER WORTHY PERFORMANCES REGARDLESS OF OSCAR CONTEXT :
CHANTE ADAMS (Roxanne Roxanne), GEMMA ARTERTON (Vita and Virginia), ANNETTE BENING (The Seagull), EMILY BLUNT (A Quiet Place), JESSICA CHASTAIN (Woman Walks Ahead), TONI COLETTE (Hereditary), OLIVIA COOKE (Thoroughbreds), CLAIRE DANES (A Kid Like Jake), ELIZABETH DEBICKI (Vita and Virginia), JUDI DENCH (Red Joan), CLAIRE FOY (Unsane), AISLING FRANCIOSI (The Nightingale), KATHRYN HAHN (Private Life), LILY JAMES (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society), LOLA KIRKE (Gemini), LESLIE MANN (Blockers), CAREY MULLIGAN (Wildlife), MAXINE PEAKE (Funny Cow), MICHELLE PFEIFFER (Where is Kyra), NATALIE PORTMAN (Annihilation), SHANNON PURSER (Sierra Borgess is a Loser), SAOIRSE RONAN (On Chesil Beach), AMY SCHUMER (I Feel Pretty), ), IMELDA STAUNTON (Finding Your Feet), KRISTEN STEWART (Lizzie), ANYA TAYLOR-JOY (Thoroughbreds), EMMA THOMPSON (The Children Act), RACHEL WEISZ (Disobedience), RUTH WILSON (Dark River), SHAiLENE WOODLEY (Adrift)
I have a feeling that Close will be overlooked for The Wife, word is that Julia Roberts won’t be campaigning for Ben is Back, Knightley, Mulligan aren’t happening; Kidman will get best supporting actress nomination for Boy Erased, McCarthy (Golden Globes, SAG-that’s it?), no distributor for Vox Lux, not sure about the two ladies from ROMA getting nominated? Stone may miss out on nomination? (Colman is the complete ”stealer” re: The Favorite) I’d watch out for Saoirse Ronan (like the wise pundits are: Tapley, Stone, etc) never underestimate her or the Academy’s love for her plus her 4th nom. Not sure about Felicity Jones, OTBOS has a December 25th release date so…..?
Top 5 right now (in no particular order)
Davis
Ronan
Gaga
Colman
Close or the ROMA lead
I think Toni Collette should be a tad higher … but great list!
I hope Vox Lux will be released next year.
I’m in the boring camp of people who loved her performance but disliked the film itself and even if I ignore that, I just have such a strong Mother-vibe here awards-wise (strong central performance in super divisive artsy horror movie) that I would frankly very surprised if Toni Colette – as great as she is – would receive any awards or nominations in this season.
I hope she sneaks into one of the early awards groups of the season with a nom, re-igniting Oscar talk.
I want Viola to win this Best Actress award so badly. I sadly don’t think it’s that likely but it honestly bugs the sh*t out of me that this powerhouse of an actor doesn’t have a Lead Actress Oscar yet. She deserves the world.
The world? Really?
Yeah
Oh, please, and I say this as a black person, there’s a long list of black folks that deserve a first Oscar before Davis wins her second. Shoot, Angela Bassett should have had the chance to star in a worthy role much more than Davis serves a second Oscar. Kaci Lemmons, Diana Ross ( a phenomenal actress that was before her time), the legend that is Ms. Tyson. So spare me that Viola was smart enough to play a game that many many white actor played to winning results. BTW: there’s a crap load of LGBT+, Asian and LatinX actors that deserve a first chance too before we cry over Davis’ second win.
What I like about Julia Roberts at this stage of her career is that she seems perfectly content with where she is. She isn’t chasing anything. Not that the other ladies are, but let’s face it, you often expect rom-com queens to implode at some point. Julia has remained committed to her craft, whether the role is lead or supporting. She’s a real trouper.
That’s one thing I respect about her so much. Kind of like Julianne Moore (another favorite), she can cash in on a big budget flick, but bounce to something “small” just as easily. Going for the scripts that speak to them and never feeling pressured to go in one direction or another.
Tulip Fever probably gonna wind up with a better reception than Mary Queen of Scots.
Not from what I’ve read on social media…..apparently it’s very good and awards worthy in certain categories (lead actress, best supporting actress, costume, hair & make-up, production design & score) Best Picture & Director have an outside chance depending on what pundits think?
Gaga
Colman
Davis
McCarthy
Portman
Aparicio and Layne as spoilers
Close??? I kinda don’t see it… yet. This list is very fluid right now, and I’m going to need to see some nominations to get a feel for the field.
This Best Actress list is insane. So insane that I don’t see Gaga making it. They’ll actually have to write “Lady Gaga” on a ballot. Remember how the audience laughed at Julie Andrews saying “Gaga” in the auditorium that night of her SoM tribute? I just can’t see it. She’ll get one or two song nominations, winning one. Björk couldn’t get nominated and she has less of a stigma than Gaga.
Also, Mary Queen of Scots will go the way of The Other Boleyn Girl, The Duchess, Vanity Fair, Becoming Jane, The Young Victoria, Belle, Tulip Fever, Marie Antionette, Jane Eyre, The Importance of Being Earnest, Miss Julie, Love and Friendship, etc. Not all bad reviewed but a lot of them go by unnoticed and get that perennial costume nod.
Omg babes, Bjork wasn’t nominated because it was a Lars Von Trier at its darkest, with no hype for best pic, just lots of critics support (in a time that this was something good by itself) and some golden globe nods.
Lady gaga is in a super hyped feature directed by academy darling Bradley Cooper, she was already nominated before, and what I remember about that Sound of music performance is when she finished her last note people jumped from their seats in standing ovation and screaming, even before she announced Julie Andrews.
PLUS, remember that 30 years ago they said “And the winner is CHER” not Meryl Streep, not Glenn Close, not Holly Hunter… CHER!
And I will gladly wear my 2010 little monster suit to this AD discussion until the nominations day.
I feel like typing this again…
not Meryl Streep, not Glenn Close, not Holly Hunter… CHER!
You mean the previously Oscar nominated (Silkwood) and Cannes best actress winner (Mask) CHER! I see a difference there… 🙂
Hahaha, yes I mean exactly this one!
Yeah, exactly. Established movie actress Cher.
Sure, but it’s not like every winner’s trajectory is the same. Look up “won the oscar for their first movie” and many of the winners were for musical performances (Barbra, Julie, JHud)
OMG they’re all fu**ing Stans! Jennifer Lawrence isn’t even in contention but another season with more non-subjective hyperbolic superlatives from super fans cause they’re faves are working will be great fun.
lol, wow, right, against that lineup. But Cher also had a previous Oscar nomination, and was Slighted DEEPLY Twice, for Mask, and for “Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, both Oscar Worthy performances, and she also had an amazing year making three hit films the year she won. Gaga doesn’t have any of that going for her, but she’s a true talent for sure, If she knocks it out of the park, she could win the whole thing
Soooooooo, you’re a Stan….coo, coo. No reply.
I’ll be right there with you *paws up*
And OMG can we talk about how robbed Bjork was of that Best Actress nomination??? I knew it wouldn’t happen, and there was no way anyone was beating Julia that year, but ugghhh one of the best performances committed to celluloid.
Gaga is an Incredible talent, who has already proved herself, and she has a legion of fans, and with the Great buzz this film is getting, not only can she get nominated, but she could win, if she knocks it out of the park.
Phantom Thread
Not the same. But I’m glad you had one.
Björk is just too perfect for the Oscars.
that’s so true
Bjork “AND” Catherine Denue, deserved Oscar Nominations for Dancer in the Dark but nobody saw the film
You’re wrong. That’s all.
yes he is
While I agree with your argument about Mary Queen of Scots, you can’t just lump something like Marie Antoinette and Tulip Fever into one
One can see the Star is Born/Widows culture war think pieces coming a mile away…
Colman is a bigger candidate than Kidman. Better-reviewed movie, the precedent of Best Actress at Venice… she’s got momentum.
I just can’t see Lady Gaga getting nominated. I read seevral reviews of Widows and while they praise Viola Davis they are not quite raptorous, thus I think she will miss out, too. As to Mary Queen of Scots it might tank. Perhaps Glenn Close, Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Olivia Coleman and Julia Roberts is the final lineup or a performance will come up out of nowhere that will be pushed ahead by the critics (wasn’t is great when Rampling, Cotilard and Huppert were nominated?).
You “can’t see Lady Gaga getting nominated” eh? She’s only received the most astonishing notices of anyone this season with everyone saying she’s headed to a nomination. But you “can’t see it.” Come out of the fog and get some clarity.
And Gaga in A Star is Born seems like a sensational zeitgeist moment for some reason. It’s our era’s version of the ageless story and by all accounts is a great one.
Agree, it has that “extra” quality, an undefinable heat that none of the rest of the actresses, great as they are, seem to have.
For the first 6-7 years of Gaga’s career her detractors kept saying “yeah yeah yeah she’s a spectacle alright, but can she lose the glitter and just let us hear her voice? Can’t she show us who she is ‘behind’ the costumes?” She’s done a lot of that with her past couple of albums (not to mention her Sound of Music tribute and last Oscar nominated song), and A Star is Born is hollywood’s chance to get in on what the music industry has had the chance to do, and that’s anoint her as an undeniable force within this era of pop culture. An Oscar win is more than “you were great this year”, in her case it’s “We get it, you’re a fucking star and we agree, welcome to the club”
The most astonishing notices? Really?! Where? And while we’re at that, please go ahead and compare her reviews to Colman’s reviews. Or even Glenn Close’s reviews.
Are you kidding? Do you actually want me to provide links to all of the Gaga Oscar talk pieces that have come out of Venice and Toronto? Are you reading? Paying attention? Awake? You’re asking “where?” The question is, “Where have YOU been?” Olivia Colman, a great actress, isn’t winning the Oscar this year.
I have this feeling critics will push Toni Collette. If she wins LA or NY, she’ll be in the conversation. Other than that, I believe Colman will sweep the critics.
Consider another plus for Julia. The Homecoming TV series is getting superb reviews (also played at TIFF) and airs Nov 2nd, just in time to remind voters of her brilliance yet again. Also, the calibre of the Homecoming cast (no less than Miss Sissy Spacek if you please who herself is having quite a year in Castle Rock – Ep 7 for Pete’s sake!! & The Old Man and a Gun out later this month also a TIFF and 86 on Meta Critic thus far – !) is said to be superb so will help the elevation.
Apparently Julia Roberts won’t be campaigning for ‘Ben is Back.’ Think I heard that on Clayton Davis’ podcast?
Wasn’t it something about her not wanting to go supporting but insisted on lead? Which seems to be false since she’s in almost every scene of the movie.
Nothing about ‘lead or supporting’ was mentioned just that she wasn’t campaigning-that was it.
What’s Mary Queen of Scots? Who directs it?
Josie Rourke is the director. A theater director who also did a little seen Much Ado About Nothing film in 2011 and a More4 TV film called The Vote. This new movie stars Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie as the titular Mary and Queen Elizabeth I, respectively. The trailer makes it seem like there’s some juicy performances but the whole thing seems a bit flat, staging wise. Still, I’m intrigued and both actresses seem like they may figure into the race in a big way this year.
It’s directed by director & artistic director of the Donmar Warehouse, Josie Rourke. Her expertise lies in period productions. She’s currently in production of Measure for Measure which I think is one of the reasons why MQOS hasn’t done the festival circuit.
Did we already forget Carey Mulligan?
She’s been overlooked a few times now, “Shame” anyone, She deserved a supporting Oscar for that
I don’t see Saoirse making the cut. MQOS looks like the perfect bomb and there’s too much competition this year.
Olivia Colman might make it BUT The Favourite really needs support across the board for her to happen, unless the critics give her every award possible.
To be honest, I think Saoirse’s performance in MQOS will be an upset (maybe Margot’s too?) along with costume, hair & make-up, production design & score; and apparently the film itself is good so I guess we’ll have to wait & see what the critics & pundits think!
I think that Viola Davis and Saoirse Ronan will not get in. The reviews for Davis are not thru the roof like:
Glenn Close is getting career best notice ( 6 noms narrative, legendary actress)
Olivia Coleman is getting career best notice (British love, The Lobster)
Julia Roberts is getting career best notice (beloved moviestar, great network, from it girl to serious actress)
Natalie Portman is getting career best notice (Jackie waves, risky role)
Melissa McCarthy is getting career best notice (showing versatility)
Yalitza Aparicio (raves in a best picture candidate)
Lady Gaga is getting raves (raves for acting chops or raves because she is really good)
Viola Davis is getting raves (she is no Streep, Winslet or Blanchett)
Nicole Kidman is getting raves (she is no Streep, Winslet or Blanchett)
Top 5 for now:
Glenn Close
Olivia Coleman
Julia Roberts
Melissa McCarthy
Yalitza Aparicio
*Mary Queen of Scots hasn’t screened yet!*
what about Portman chances? Vox Lux is getting rave reactions and everybody agrees on Portman`s excellent performance. I think she coud be the critic darling. Besides that, editing, cinematography, score, original song, all seem worthy of oscar attention, even Corbet and Cassidy might surprise. If it finds a distributor i guess we`ll have a contender…
Julia Roberts, or Olivia Colman for The Favourite, or Yalitza Aparicio for Roma are going to have to knock out one of more of these five.
Glenn Close is getting snubbed, guys. I hate to break it to you now but we all know it’s true. Sad, yes, but 100% true. I also think Destroyer is gonna be overlooked this year and Kidman already is probably getting in for Supporting in Boy Erased. So count two of Roberts, Layne, Ronan, Colman or Aparicio in alongside McCarthy, Davis and Gaga.
It’s only 100% true (or not) the day the nominations are announced. Right now, it’s just all speculation.
I don’t wanna rain on the parade or anything, but man this snub seems pretty obvious
So much that it’s 100% true that Glenn Close is getting snubbed. She is now the frontrunner to win. #Choking on humble pie, lol.
Ummmmm, she DID lose though? Sure, I said she wouldn’t get nominated, but I did successfully predict 4 out of 5 nominees and Close was ultimately fools gold. But yeah, you’re right, I was too bullish on her non-chance. c’est la vie
I can’t see Olivia Colman and Glenn Close missing out.
Is Hedges lead or supporting in Ben is Back?
Close and Colman will be the two battling for the win.
“A Star Is Born” is gonna get so much backlash til January (for being the current front runner) that Gaga could miss on the nom in the end, especially since she is not the “actor’s actor”.
Backlash based on what? Haven’t heard any detractions at all so far. It seems as if the quality of the film is airtight.
One of the lead producers, Jon Peters, lost a sexual harrasment trial in 2011 and had to pay more than $3 million to the accuser.
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/hollywood-docket-superman-producer-jon-228874
Nonsense. This won’t harm the film at all. You’re reaching.
Lady Gaga working with R Kelly in 2013…
#MeToo
LOL is that the best you’ve got?
she already faced backlash for that. Where u been? You’re a madonna stan aren’t you… butt hurt that Evita never earned Madge the Oscar?
My fave already has an Oscar. 😉
It already started:
https://jezebel.com/a-star-is-borns-notorious-producer-has-been-sued-for-se-1828957531?rev=1536688033202

I hate to say it, but consistently calling something the frontrunner, no matter how good it is, can hurt in the end. As Sasha always says, “voters hate being told what to like, even if they already like it”. What’s helping it though is that it’s not an A+ movie… it’s a solid B+ which is better, in terms of Oscar, because it doesn’t have to live up the idea that it’s a flawless film.
