A boring video for a boring film. Very fitting.
Very good point steve50 about more difficult to create than fantasy. Lol and back to Carlos.
Thanks for the link, alan of montreal. I’ve been digging up as many featurettes and articles on this major achievement as possible.
I would think that reality is a thousand times more difficult to recreate than fantasy. (and now, back to Carlos)
Again. Peter Jackson has made it 1000000 better than the pathetic “Life of Pi”. If it wins the Oscar it would be a fucking travesty.
@alan of montreal – great article! There are also some great making of featurettes on youtube that are worth checking out.
I myself was amazed by the effects and I work amongst many vfx, compositers and lighters who aspire to create work like that.
Here’s a story on the water effects in Life of Pi (I’m not going to get into a discussion about the tone of some of the comments–it’s a fruitless and frustrating task, and I’ve been drawn into too many of them on this site)– http://www.la411.com/411Update/Issue/Articles/Story.cfm?StoryID=1304
@carlos, what makes you the all knowing all seeing expert of VFX?
Exactly as Peter Jackson did with Gollum and the FX in LOTR and TH.
Rufussondheim is spot on. When a viewer cannot distinguish what is real and what is CGI, the visual art is impeccably precise and is doing what it’s supose to do……make you believe it’s real as Pi brilliantly delivers.
@rufussondheim
That just proves your utter ignorance regarding FX.
When I left Life of Pi I instantly said to my friends “Golly, the special effects are so well done, I had no clear what were the real shots of the tiger and which were not.”
Wow!! Lots of douches and their pathetic atempts to being “ironic” in this site!!
So difficult to be the only sane man…..
“‘Life of Pi’ deserved it’s wins, completely. ‘The Hobbit’ might be packed with visual effects, but in my opinion, they aren’t very well done. They won’t age nearly as well as ‘LotR’ have. ‘The Avengers’ is a worthy nominee, for sure, but ‘Pi’s’ are better, sorry. ‘The Hunger Games’ doesn’t even deserve a mention.”
I agree about The Hobbit. Those VFX just don’t have the oomph that the original LOTR trilogy displayed. Hunger Games…the Capitol scenes were impressive, and Katniss & Peter’s flames in the tribute parade stood out. Based on the trailer, Prometheus’ effects RUTSed The Hobbit’s. (RUTS=Ran Up The Score)
Carlos, I sense your pain, and I want to acknowledge it, because you’re obviously a very bitter and unhappy person at this moment, and I hope this feeling passes quickly – but I still have to declare that you’re being a stubbornly ignorant dick.
(and to PaulH, please carry on humiliating yourself in front of us all; I find it most entertaining.)
Bitches gon bitch
Haters gon hate
Carlos, the water wasn’t VFX. You’re right. Neither were the tiger, the boat, the whales, the storm, the glowing island, the flying fish, the hyena nor the orangutan. It’s a fucking documentary, k? Get over it!
“I’d have less problem with you being a dick if you actually knew what you were talking about….alas….”
Apparently, Ryan’s condition is highly contagious. So sad…
what i actually loved finding out about Pi was that if it wasn’t human, it was most likely an effect. Incredible.
Hmm… someone didn’t get laid. Happened to me the other day, too.
Life of Pi is so great in its visual imagery that you often think they are real (as is the case of water). Pi was always winning with this group, and it will win the Oscar, too. It’s one of the few categories where we already KNOW the winner.
I’d have less problem with you being a dick if you actually knew what you were talking about….alas….
“This is why attorneys advise defendants not to testify.”
Hey guys!!! Over here!!! Check how witty I am!!!!
the water most definitely IS part of the FX for the film.
The water is not FX.
The water is not FX.
This is why attorneys advise defendants not to testify.
Also really happy to see The Impossible get some recognition. I saw the film last week, and the tsunami and post-tsunami water scenes (it all seems to be about water this year, doesn’t it?) were spectactular. I don’t know if Naomi Watts and Tom Holland did their own stunt work (well, unlikely in the case of Holland, given his age), but the realism of the scenes where their characters are trying to find each other in the water was incredible.
Everybody’s talking about the tiger, but the effects also have to do with the construction of the water. Ang Lee said that he’s never been satisfied with the way water’s been used and shot in film, and i think he did a superb job of giving it a texture here that has not been seen in many other films. I felt completely immersed in the film–that doesn’t mean I think the film was perfect. There were some contrivances that I could have done without in the Montreal scenes (though it was great to see my city showcased in the film). But in terms of effects, there are few films that I’ve seen that use 3D so well (Pina comes to mind) where I’ve forgotten I was watching a film.
Oh holy hobbit Carlos, accept the win and move on already.
@ filmboymichael
You are the one insisting on the subject man. Not me.
I just said it was total BS that VES gives more nominations to “The Hobbit” and then awards the pathetic FX of “Life of Pi”. Just ridiculous.
I actually haven’t complained at all – and I don’t do well with people coming on here for the purpose to be confrontational, which it seems you are all about. I’ve been a part of the awardsdaily community since its inception and I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. Usually the people who go are the ones who cause the most trouble. You one of those people?
life of pi and brave is a surprise winner. The Hobbit gets a true grit shut out. Game of Thrones wins some awards which is good.
@ filmboymichael
“why don’t YOU leave and the rest of us can sit around and discuss our feelings with reckless abandon.”
Only you are complaining.
And if you read my previous comments you can see that I was discussing the subject of the post, until Ryan decided to be a condescending jackass.
@Carlos, why don’t YOU leave and the rest of us can sit around and discuss our feelings with reckless abandon.
@rufussondheim
“I don’t think I can live without Ryan describing his feelings.”
Then marry him!!! You can have all the updates you want without bothering the rest of the world.
– I don’t think I can live without Ryan describing his feelings.
– Then marry him!!!
Boy, that escalated quickly.
thanks @ruffussondheim!
I don’t think I can live without Ryan describing his feelings.
Gravatar.com – for putting your photo up
As the editor of this site, I think Ryan can editorialize however he may choose. Deal with it.
“yeah, wasn’t actually worried.”
Then why bother to write about it?
We all can live without you describing your feelings.
@ Astarisborn
Peter Jackson has done that and better….
Agree with you 100% Ryan. Lee’s “visual art” also made me feel. And that is exactly what a great film should offer us.
I don’t really think there is any call to be an asshole @Carlos.
@ filmboymichael
Nobody gives a fuck.
in other news – and I hate that I have to ask – how does one put their photo up next to their name?
OT but is Harvey out in full force today?

@ Ryan
I can live with your pity man. Don’t worry.
I can live with your pity man. Don’t worry.
yeah, wasn’t actually worried.
‘Life of Pi’ deserved it’s wins, completely. ‘The Hobbit’ might be packed with visual effects, but in my opinion, they aren’t very well done. They won’t age nearly as well as ‘LotR’ have. ‘The Avengers’ is a worthy nominee, for sure, but ‘Pi’s’ are better, sorry. ‘The Hunger Games’ doesn’t even deserve a mention. ‘Prometheus’ would rank second for me after ‘Pi’.
“A film does not have to be action packed to have brilliant CGI.”
Where did I said that?
Pi was a really dissapointing and frustrating film. I expected greatness before I saw it for the good word of mouth it was getting. I think that just made me HATE more Lee’s film.
ditto – (filmboymichael and Ryan)
@Carlos we’ll have to agree to disagree. I see it as a monumental visual experience and the best 3D experience I’ve ever had. It’s, for me, the best movie of 2013 – which I have exclaimed many times.
A film does not have to be action packed to have brilliant CGI. Pi is far from tedious and boring.
@filmboymichael
No, it’s not.
It’s a tedious, boring film with a pathetic use of FX. Ang Lee really dissapointed me this time.
“What all of you here are doing is not visual effects, it is visual art” – Ang Lee at the VES awards
===
I feel sadness bordering on pity toward anyone who can’t revel in this visionary film. I’m sorry for people who can’t feel how it made me feel.
I think the people who are hating on Pi haven’t seen it – it’s a triumph of seemless, beautiful CGI.
Life of Pi effects are so subtle and seamlessly smooth. While watching it, you never think of it as a special effects driven film. The visuals are so real, it devours your senses. Well deserved Mr. Lee and team.
Nice to see so many Life of Pi haters here. Eat your hearts out. Suckers!!
Really VES?? What the fuck is your problem???
“The hobbit” is the most nominated film and deservedly so because it has the best FX of the year, and you award the pathetic “Life of PI”?????????
SHAME ON FUCKING YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the VES, Pi’s tiger trumped all of the great effects The Avengers displayed. To each their own. I look for a more competitive, level playing field with the Saturn nominations which should be announced at the end of the month. Avengers v. Hunger Games v. Dark Knight Rises. Now that’ll be something to see,
The Impossible!
Hobbit wins a cinematography-related award. But that’s Pi’s to lose on Oscar night.
“Life of Pi” getting smacked for winning Visual Effects? That’s a first. Geesh.
Why the griping, PaulH – I see both The Avengers and The Hobbit on the list of winners.
Good choices and I hope they carry through to the Oscars.
Predictable and deserved. The best effects win, not the biggest films.
The Hobbit nearly pulls a True Grit. Not surprising. The Avengers can’t get a breadcrumb or two of respect from even this guild. Life of Pi….whatever. Looks like they’ll win the corresponding Oscar. Talk about your s**t sandwiches.
