Im soooooo happy for Charlize! I felt for Furiosa , i cried , i get excited, i felt powerful , i’ve never seen such a powerful female role ( one armed) in Cinema, she has created something so different from what we usually see, and it’s rare to see that kind of female roles in cinema. She took the whole movie in her shoulder. Big up Mr Theron! I loooooove this nominations i hope it will be like this!
So well said! I’m in awe of what she achieved with an instantly iconic character and I hope she lands a much deserved and long overdue third Oscar nomination (if one could tolerate The Burning Plain snub, the Young Adult snub from The Academy was just too hard to swallow).
OK, all these editing snubs for Spotlight are getting me a little worried. I mean, I know Birdman pulled off the exception last year, but I doubt it’ll happen again this year (or for a long time to come, really). Of course, I have no idea whether Spotlight was supposed to get nominated for its editing – maybe it’s just not a movie with great editing (though, based on what I’ve heard, I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be). And, of course, it could STILL get nominated for editing at the Oscars, even if it does miss out on that nomination with many other groups. But I certainly don’t feel this is improving its chances… I don’t know…
It came in 2nd with the Boston Society of Film Critics for that award though. And the industry’s tastes are often highly different from the critics’, particularly in the tech categories.
I know, and I was very happy about that, but it’s not even getting nominated with most of the critics’ groups that are coming out with nominations… But, yeah, that’s what I’m hoping, of course – that the industry sees it differently.
Of course, I’m still supporting Spotlight for the win sight unseen 🙂 – I could easily just not like the movie, once I do see it. I didn’t like Argo, after all, and I didn’t think that was very likely beforehand…
I’m loving the Sicario love (it’s my favorite film of 2015 so far), and while I understand Emily Blunt’s absence in Best Actress, I do wish she was along for the ride.
Sicario was absolutely incredible. I love that it is really being recognized now.
Was absolutely floored by Sicario … one of the most intense films I’ve ever seen … and easily my favorite of 2015 … Benicio was incredible
Really happy for the love Mad Max: Fury Road and Ex Machina are getting so far. I truly hope they will manage to score some major award wins and nominations.
The best actress line-up is just fantastic. More Charlize Theron in this awards season please. It’s not going to happen probably but even the thought of watching her being nominated again for her ferocious turn as Furiosa is just fantastic.
Marion Cotillard (Macbeth) and Justin Kurzel’s brilliant film are nowhere to be found thus far and that’s really, really sad. Marion gave her all portraying an iconic role and the same goes for Fassbender but at least he won the LAFCA Best Actor Award for his work in Steve Jobs and hopefully an Oscar nomination is on the way. Harvey Weinstein’s lack of support for Macbeth so far is a disservice to both Marion and Michael’s phenomenal work. I read two interviews of him last week praising Cotillard’s work in he film and saying he hopes she lands a supporting nomination. I was like WTF? If you really hope she’ll score a nomination, why don’t you build a strong Oscar campaign for her and the film? Why don’t you show your support for Kurzel’s astonishing vision and both her and Fassbender’s superb work? I mean has he sent any screeners for the film or anything? Alright, he hopes. We also hope then. That Cotillard will never work with him again (his treatment of Nine and The Immigrant speaks for itself) and neither Fassbender, Kurzel and artists of that high caliber in general will work with him again as well. If you dump your own film, how can you say you hope it will make it to The Oscars?
Mad Max as plausible contender basically depends on getting Miller a Best Director nod from the Globes it would appear. Do they snake Revenant’s campaign message about how gonzo the film is and how difficult the shoot was?
Getting a nod from the HFPA certainly won’t hurt, but I think the DGA nominating Miller would carry even more weight.
I’m happy to see that SICARIO and its namesake are hanging in there. It’s still my favorite of this year. Having said that I’ve only seen five of those ten.
The only thing that’s starting to bug me with these lists/awards and the way things seem to be shaking out is that Joel Edgerton is nowhere to be found. Now that’s mainly because I love THE GIFT a film he wrote, directed, and starred in. I never expected that to really be an “Oscar movie” but I figured he’d be getting in for Supporting Actor for BLACK MASS. He deserves something for the year of work he’s put in.
So happy that Mistress America’s screenplay was recognized. It’s definitely in my top 10 of the year and will quite possibly make my top 5 when all is said and done. I wish Lola Kirke would be nominated for Best Actress, but I know that’s wishful thinking.
Save Ian McKellen and Michael B. Jordan, that Best Actor lineup is a sorry state. It reminds me of last year’s Oscar race in the same category. So much competition will leave so many worthy (and worthier) performances out of the final five. Both Abraham Attah and Jacob Tremblay should be nominated, even though I know they won’t be in favor of the safer choices of Matt Damon and Michael Fassbender.
I’m glad for Charlize Theron’s nomination. Hope she keeps getting more.
That’s a nice lineup for Best Actress
Best Actress:
Cate Blanchett (Carol)
Brie Larson (Room)
Charlotte Rampling (45 Years)
Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn)
Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road)
Theron isn’t getting a nod unless JLaw completely craters.
That’s the top five from the critics so far this season, according to my tally!
Quality shit from OFCS, as per. One of the smartest critics societies on the whole. Love so much about these nominations, like recognition for Ian McKellen, and for MOTHERFUCKING LEE PING BIN YAAAAAAAAAAASSSS
I’m so disappointed in LAFCA not citing The Assassin in at least one category.
I’m holding out hope for NSFC, but after the shit they pulled with American Hustle two years back, I’m not holding out much…
Me to!!! Sorry Chivo but Mark Lee Ping Bin’s work in The Assassin is the best this year!
I was quite disappointed in NYFCC for not awarding him this year (as much as I also love Ed Lachmann’s work in Carol) since they are the group who awarded him in his previous foreign works.
Idris Elba! Where is he??!!! He was so great in Beasts of No Nation
A couple years ago was the first time I realized, despite Sasha reiterating over and over, that just because a film is far and away one of the best reviewed of the year and a critics darling…it doesn’t mean shit. Inside Llewyn Davis had everything going for it I thought. Incredible reviews including countless 100’s on MC, lots of critics wins, directed by the Coens who the Academy usually loves…only to get squat when noms came out. Couldn’t believe it.
So now I find myself every year thinking ‘who is gonna be this year’s Inside Llewyn Davis…’. Right now I think it’s Room.
“So now I find myself every year thinking ‘who is gonna be this year’s Inside Llewyn Davis…’. Right now I think it’s Room.”
Fingers crossed!
Can we just take these nominees and make them the Oscar nominees? There is pretty much nothing wrong here.
Missing a few Oscar categories, but otherwise…yeah.
It seems Joy is missing the mark. 63 average on MC after 9 reviews. Could still get in but it’s missing in everything so far and I know that critics and guilds are different but we’d be hearing buzz about it being of the best at this point wouldn’t we? COULD still snag a Best Pic nom but I don’t see DOR getting a nom now.
So much more can happen but at this moment, I think the Best Pic lineup would be, in no order:
Spotlight
Brooklyn
Carol
Mad Max
The Martian
Bridge of Spies
Hateful Eight
The Revenant
okay I did not know joy currently has 45% on RT. very very shocking turnaround to this race. a very hyped up movie not that’s panning well with the critics as we thought? im adding Charlotte and/ or Charlize to my top 5!
Hopefully Joy will end the boner for DOR. I think Jennifer Lawrence will make through, i am sure she will but i think this best actress list is perfect
No Johnny Depp in Black Mass… too bad.
Yeah! I jump up and down for Cynthia Nixon! Yeah!
I didn’t like the trailer to joy. It’s about a female serial killer.
GOOD:Ian McKellen gets noticed. I’ve been getting worried. BAD: No Second Mother in Foreign Film and the execrable torture porn Goodnight Mommy
If these were the Oscar nominations id have almost nothing to complain about.
These nominations are fantastic! I love seeing the mentions for Oscar Isaac and Ian McKellen
IAN MCKELLEN! CHARLIZE! OSCAR ISAAC! THE ASSASSIN FOR CINEMATOGRAPHY!
I’m starting to think that Lawrence will really fail to manage the nomination so it’s giving me a lot of hope to see Theron getting all these recognization from critics…and great job to nominate Isaac, he was fantastic!
I couldn’t care less about Mad Max but if Charlize can spare us JLaw’s smug face on Oscar night, I’m all for it!!! Go Charlize!
what if i don’t care about either ???? 🙂
i can see this happening.
Trust me, JLaw will get the nomination over Charlotte Rampling. The Academy has a boner for Lawrence.
If Rampling gets snubbed in the Oscars, then they are really stupid! I have nothing against Lawrence but i’m already tired of her projects with Rusell…
This is the Academy. Over-50s. 45 Years is right up their street, and Charlotte Rampling’s never been nominated before. If Jennifer Lawrence replaces anyone, it won’t be her. Trust ME!
I didn’t realize Rampling’s never been nominated. That’s fubar.
I LOVE these nominations. Happiest of all for the Mistress America screenplay nod and Cynthia Nixon getting in for James White. I could quibble all over the place, since even a list I made on my own, I would end up disagreeing with some choices eventually. But I really don’t think there are any nods here that feel terrible or wrong. Also, I’m VERY fond of the Best Documentary nods.
Mistress America is in my top 10 of the year. Great choice.
Great list. Nothing egregious here. I mean, I’m still not as enthused about Spotlight and The Martian as most are, but I’m learning to live with it.
Looks like a consensus is building in Animated Feature, same 5 titles are being nominated everywhere. Most likely to repeat at the Oscars.
Best list yet
Yeah its good!
Meanwhile JOY’s Oscar chances are officially dead. Worst reviewed DOR picture ever. 45% on RT, crazy. I didn’t expect it was so bad.
You win some you lose some but we put ourselves out there unlike them cowards
That’s life, the winner takes it all, the loser pays ……!
Make a switch and be happy – Cheers!
So it’s this year’s Unbroken.
Now that’s a healthier looking Best Actor slate. Keep on improving them, boys!
a couple dogs in that Best Pic lineup, but otherwise pretty solid across the board
Don’t talk bad about dogs, I’m in love for real dogs. :)) Lol
As Sasha said, the list is ok!
Of all the animals in this kingdom of ours, to disparage against dogs has never sat right with me either,
please get charlize theron in there!!!! if the snubs for Jlaw continously happen which is looking very likely, she needs to be the replacement..lets go!!!!!! icon female performance FTW.
