Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

I really like it when individuals come together and
share views. Great blog, stick with it!
such a classy speech. the likes of which we will never hear again from other legends honored honorarily by the Academy…since this type of prize is relegated to an event far from the big Oscar night and from the public.
RIP Peter O’Toole and Joan Fontaine.
“If the Academy can live with awarding people like Roberto Benigni, Jamie Foxx, Whitaker, etc”
-Whitaker doesn’t belong in that list.
It seems fitting that Meryl Streep would present the honor to the wonderfully talented Peter O’Toole.
It’s all true. We’ll see how it goes…
OK I’ve replayed the interview to get the exact words but it’s hard to hear behind the French translation so here’s what I could gather:
“Anyone who tells you he doesn’t want to win awards for something or doesn’t want to get great reviews for his performance, that would be a lie. But one thing that I’ve learnt in this business is you have absolutely no control over what people think of your performance or your film, and they may tell you something good in front of you but when they get behind closed doors they will write something completely different, or they’ll vote a different way. All you can do really is to give everything possible when you’re on that set and try to do the best you can, the rest is out of your hands.”
They also interviewed Jean Dujardin on a red carpet, he says when they first met, Leo had a weird look on his face like he was wondering “How on earth did you get an Oscar?” but then he told him he had voted for him. Dujardin added it felt absurd because in all fairness DiCaprio should have won 8 of them already.
Martin Scorsese was also interviewed separately about Leo: “That’s been held against him at times, because he was immensely successful, because he was in an immensely successful film, and so what? They typecast him but in the meantime he proved in my films and in other films like Blood Diamond that he was a damn good actor!”
I could just imagine how embarrassing it would be for the Hollywood industry right now, if Peter O’Toole had not won that honorary Oscar.
Winning an Oscar is often aobut timing and who is also nominated in the category. Deborah Kerr, Glenn Close multiple nomms, no wins.
Looking at O’Toole – lost to Gregory Peck (an awesome win there), Rex Harrison (ok, but Peter was up against Richard Burton – another multiple nominee who never won), lost to Cliff Robertson (a great performance in a movie that dated fast) perhaps Lion in Winter should have been his win. Then he lost to John Wayne (an iconic figure rewarded for lesser work, but seen as the last chance to honour him), Marlon Brando’s Godfather – no chance there for O’Toole. In the 1980’s losing to DeNiro’s Raging Bull, and Ben Kingslety’s Ghandi, and then 25 years later he loses his last competitive Oscar to Forest Whittaker. It is an incredible achievement to be nominated 8 times, but i don’t think he was ripped off. A great body of work.
Peter O’Toole was a class act, a great actor and may he rest in peace! His performance in Lawrence of Arabia will forever be remembered as one of the greatest of all time!
Leo is The Man! If he ends up like Peter O’Toole, so be it! If the Academy can live with awarding people like Roberto Benigni, Jamie Foxx, Whitaker, etc. and not rewarding giants like Kubrick, Hitchcock and great actors like DiCaprio, so be it..
The Academy sometimes amuses me with their poor gaffes and choices over and over again. It really makes them look like fools. I hope this year to be different. We’ll see.
OT: Leonardo DiCaprio on French TV answering a question about potentially winning an Oscar for The Wolf of Wall Street: “any actor that tells you he doesn’t care about awards would be lying. Some people will say to your face they loved your performance and then say differently behind your back, but there’s nothing I can do about it, except being there on the set every day and give it my best.”
Interesting…
