Haiku:
The “Great” Phil Hoffman
May he rest in peace for good
He was an “all-time”.
I can just picture now, in Heaven, the unconventional handsome is Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s rehearsing his role of Romeo. Only, in Heaven, they don’t die, they “eat cake”. Rest in (splendorous) peace!! 🙁
*tear*
I will always remember your smile. It was infectious.
Completely ruined my day today hearing this news….he was one of my favorite actors and I will miss him. Just very sad and devastating.
🙁
What a sad day for cinema… here in Brazil also died today Eduardo Coutinho, brilliant documentarist (Brazil´s greatest) and AMPAS member…
What sad news. One of my favorite actors, a seal of quality of any film. Happiness was the first time I noticed him, as was Boogie Nights. He was tremendous in Almost Famous, still to this day on my top 3 of films. So brilliant in Capote, Doubt, Magnolia. Gone too soon
T.
Absolutely devastating. I don’t think I have been hit this hard by the loss of an actor before. Really tough, and many thousands of us out there adored the man and his work.
Would be a lovely touch if Inherent Vice was now dedicated to him.
The last year, and especially the last 2 months, have been brutal. Schell and PSH in two days is really sad, but given the circumstances surrounding PSH, it is one of the toughest losses in recent cinematic history. We will all miss him dearly.
I guess I feel lucky to have seen so many great performances from him.
Really sad for his family and friends.
Terrible news. Tragic for all of us.
I can’t believe he’s dead. He’s been in so many important projects over the past decades. Without him, it’s like my sense of movies cannot be the same. I’ll miss him deeply. I’ve enjoyed every single performance by him I’ve seen. He’s made movies worth watching for me. RIP, great actor of our generation.
Sorry–an addendum–it seems his work in Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 may have been almost complete and hopefully can be preserved–perhaps we can see the final bits of his wonderful work–and how sad that it will be his final bits (as far as I can tell).
But more importantly, how sad for his loved ones.
So sad…..he was so memorable from the first moment I saw his character Dusty in the movie Twister on the big screen. And what an actor. An Oscar for lead actor in Capote and several other nominations. And I don’t know if it will be possible to ‘replace’ him as Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming Hunger Games sequels (Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2)….although, obviously, he’ll have to be ‘replaced’–he just left his mark on the characters he played. His performance in Boogie Nights was also particularly memorable for me.
Such a loss, so tragic. I feel for his family and his friends. His struggle is over. May he RIP.
I am truly shocked from the announcement of his death. He was a great actor who was in many great films but was a human being who had many demons that created this foolish and selfish act on his part. I feel bad for his three kids that he left behind and a girlfriend that I am sure he cherished and loved. Besides all that his work will be remember and face will be everlasting.
Rest in Peace, Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
I feel like i’m going through the several stages of grief – shock, anger, loss, acceptance etc. While the enormity that such great talent will no longer be creating, looms large, the wonderful thing about cinema is that it lives on, and so does his amazing body of work. Whether it be the 3 films that a James Dean made, or the 50 films that Philip Seymour Hoffman made, the spirit and soul of the man lives on. He will perhaps be more famous for dying young, it’s weird how that works. The few unreleased movies that he completed will hold even more fascination. Still, very tragic and distressing news. Thanks for the opportunities to wax lyrical about this amazing actor.
Yes Ryan thanks!!!
(Bruce, I’ll guess that should be “posts” and not “plots” — but let me know if I’ve made the wrong guess.)
This is very sad. It is shame to lose one of the best modern actors. Very sad. I never thought this was going to happen very soon. Very sad.
Holy fuck, my heart dropped when I saw this shit. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is one of my absolute favorite actors of the past twenty years, just one great performance after another. The Talented Mr. Ripley, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Capote, Mission Impossible 3, The Savages, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Master, Moneyball, 25th Hour…goddamn, this is heartbreaking to hear.
Dammit, first Maxmillian Schell, now this? Even worse as he was still so young, you knew he still had a few Oscar-worthy performances in him and was always fantastic in anything. Just a massive loss and a sad sign of how it’s not just the young kids who can succumb to demons. Just horrible to see this news at all.
Now i want watch doubt the master and capote over and over
Oh my god this is Terrible.
To Ryan Adams. After I posted that I noticed the posts you put up in recognition for the master last year. It brought a tear to my eye. You must never change that.
rough day for all of us, Bruce, so it’s impossible to imagine what people closest to Mr Hoffman are going through.
(do I need to fix ‘plots’ in your comment? is that autocorrect interference?)
This is really really upsetting. Such a great and I mean great character actor. I will truly miss the individual and his films. RIP Phillip.
Incredibly sad news. RIP
I’m so devastated by this. He was one of my favorite actors. People online are saying he died in his bathroom alone with a needle sticking out of his arm. It’s so awful and it just feels like we lost so many actors already this year.
I first saw him in a movie called Almost Famous. He was playing Lester Bangs and he was magnificent. My deepest condolences to his lovers.
I am simply devastated by this. He is one of my favorite actors of all time. So intense, so intelligent, so complex, so memorable. Shocking, terrible news. A gargantuan loss to the world of acting. He was a Master.
Fuck. That’s all that comes to mind. This is just fucked! I can’t believe this. Ahh man. 23 years of sobriety and this! FUCK!
I came here to check on the news about the Oscar race and wasn’t understanding why videos of Hoffman were on display. Then, scrolling down the page and saw the RIP post…my heart sunk. This is f*cking unbelievable and very sad. 🙁
What a Punch in the Stomach! What is going wrong in Hollywood? I can’t believe it! But we will all remember him as one of the greatest Actors ever! Thank you Phillip Seymour Hoffman for giving us so many truly remarkable hours and magic moments in Cinema! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!
Huge loss, Philip was definitely one of the greats. No bad performance and he was often the best thing about the whole movie.
One of the best actors of his generation, so tragic. RIP Mr Hoffman you will be so so missed
That’s just…wrong! So tragic, one of the greatest actors of all time dead so young. Unbelievable, what a shame.
No no no no no I get my news from Awards daily and this was the first I heard….no no no no this is unthinkable NOOOOO
(And Casey, thanks for sharing your professional experience with him.)
Shattering news. So Sad. And such a big loss.
I hadn’t heard this until coming to AD just now. I had thought of him occasionally since hearing that he’d gone to rehab a while back but hadn’t heard anything. This shouldn’t be happening. I’m shaking. This guy had a problem and knew it and no one could help him I guess. The world is a bad place and we all lose again.
A tragedy indeed.
This sad news unfortunately has come at the very least unexpected time for me, as well.

I’ve been fortunate ever since his earlier filming days, namely in the Scent of a Woman year (1992), and onwards to be able to delight in his thespian efforts in almost all of his US studios-produced films.
Some of my favorites — his performances — include but are not limited to ones in Almost Famous, Capote, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Savages – just to name a few or so.
R.I.P.
His relapse was a blind item recently; his castmates were trying to get him to rehab.
I guess it didn’t work.
Shock. Major loss to the acting world and only 46. So sorry for him and his family. RIP
James Gandolfini and Roger Ebert left me broken, so will Hoffman. His role in The Master is one of the best ever.
A remarkable talent taken far too soon
This is so wrong, so wrong. Rest in peace Philip. 🙁
What?
it’s like i’m choking, too many great actors have dies this year and all very unexpectedly.
Wow. I had to touch base with a few friends because we all loved him. He really was the best of his generation.
no
This is unbelievable. As an actor myself and as a film lover I feel like I have lost something today. Hoffman was more than likely my favorite actor of all time, every performance was a master class. I was lucky enough to have met him at the goodman theatre where I work and where he was directing a play called “the long red road” staring Tom Hardy. I didn’t have many interactions with him but found him to be 100% down to earth, a sweet and kind man. After sharing many cigarette breaks with Mr. Hoffman and briefly speaking to him, I asked him to sign my copy of “Capote” one day which he gladly did. I now cherish it more than ever.
NOOOOOO!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!?
What a punch to the gut.
So sad. Great, talented actor who will be missed.
This is tragic! The Academy needs to pay respect to this wonderful actor this year In Memoriam.
Very sad and shocking
No fucking way this is actually happening… The guy is one of my favorite american actors of all time… God dammit…
RIP…
Goddammit. Just unbelievable… RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman..
