Based on this trailer, it looks like we could have a game changer! And why do I have the feeling that it’s Jonah Hill who is playing the same role again, very ‘This is the End’-ish…
DiCaprio is an acquired taste
Him?
Jonah Hill looks fun in places, but I cannot get my head around this. The vibe I’m getting is nowhere near what I would expect from Scorsese and I’m anxious as to whether he will be able to pull it off. DiCaprio is an acquired taste, but the real problem here is the tone of the trailer. It seems like one big piss-take, which I’m sure it’s not. But I can’t help but feel that they are short-changing the potential of this story by highlighting the absurd and comic aspects of it. Not sold on this one. Any which way, it doesn’t look like obvious academy award material, but it might be a commercial hit. Who knows. I think there’s only room for this OR American Hustle in the hunt for BP, not both of them. Or just maybe they will both fail miserably.
I think DiCaprio looks awesome in this. I always think he’s good, but maybe a little the same, and I think there’s some range showing in this (the plane in particular). Might be a good year for him! Jonah Hill looks great too.
Forest Whitaker was wonderful in “The Butler,” my favorite thing about the movie, but the movie doesn’t have staying power, and his performance just doesn’t have the range or scope to contend with these others.
Bollocks. Just y’all wait and see. People doubted Life of Pi last year. It won more Oscars than any other film. The Butler team is working it behind the scenes and securing industry attention, and this shit is catnip for that lot. Factor in the $100m+ box office, the appeal it’ll have with actors (most of SAG’s in the fucking film lol) and Oprah’s power in Hollywood and you have a bona fide Oscar hit. Forest Whitaker will probably get in.
Oh, I don’t know, I was expecting something a lot more “Important” from Scorsese and DiCaprio. Hill does look like he could figure, as he’s doing something slightly different and more evolved than his usual supporting turn, and Supporting Actor is weak. But come on, everyone including Hill is just playing his type here. McConaughey looks too thin.
Best Actor still looks to be EJIOFOR, HANKS, MCCONAUGHEY, REDFORD, and DERN, with the possibility of BALE or PHOENIX depending on how strong their roles are (never count them out).
I don’t get the recent tepidness over Dern. I had originally heard great things about his performance, and it’s Alexander Payne and a character turn. So now what’s the problem? Too supporting? Too muted? Funny how everyone was saying he’d win in the beginning of the year, and now he’s the weakest of the top 5 contenders. I don’t know, he doesn’t have the clout of Redford, but I don’t see them ripping him off if he’s good enough in a well written film. The one who SHOULD be in the running but seems out of it due to the pulpy subject matter of his film is JACKMAN. That was powerful stuff, while I get the sense that all of the likely nominees except for Ejiofor and McConaughey are overrated. And I agree with Jerry Grant above me that WHITAKER doesn’t have what it takes to be nominated for his performance in The Butler, and have said as much since I saw the film.
This looks cartoonish in a bad way. I could not even make it through the trailer, and I see a lot of movies. Jonah Hill is kind of a deal breaker, but with Scorsese you always hope for the best.
Jonah Hill was absolutely amazing in This Is the End where he played…. Jonah Hill. 🙂 But yeah, he looks like he could surprise and get a second supporting nomination.
Jonah Hill looks great – kind of Joe Pesci-lite.
Could be fun.
What I’m stating is, based on the trailer, seems I’ve seen it before.
I’m getting a Goodfellas-y vibe from this, which is great.
Well….let me be the naysayer….Hollywood could be a little fed up with the “bernie Madoff” type movies….Blue Jasmin….Arbitrage…and there are many more that been released in the past 2-3 years, including TV shows.
It could be enough for the voters….although this looks entertaining….and as for Leo….he seems to be playing the same characters over and over…Gadsby…Howard Hughes…Catch me if you can….the little rich boy.
Just saying.
I don’t really like Jonah Hill, but I gotta admit, he looks good in this. I am looking forward to a Jonah Hill performance. There. I said it.
Okay I’m finally sold. It’s gonna be good.
MAYBE Dicaprio for Actor, YES Jonah Hill for Supporting.
Bryce’s top 5 above look good, though Dern and Phoenix could certainly take Hanks and/or DiCaprio. Forest Whitaker was wonderful in “The Butler,” my favorite thing about the movie, but the movie doesn’t have staying power, and his performance just doesn’t have the range or scope to contend with these others.
Jonah Hill looks like he has new dentures.
Ok for my money the only thing left to uncover now is whether Christian Bale is a Best Actor player. So for the first time this season I’m going to venture early predictions:
Actor in a Leading Role
Chiwetel Ejiofor – 12 YEARS A SLAVE
Tom Hanks – CAPTAIN PHILLIPS
Matthew McConaughey – DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
Leonardo DiCaprio – THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
Robert Redford – ALL IS LOST
Alternative: Bruce Dern – NEBRASKA
Safe to predict Jonah Hill’s second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor
