In my opinion, the trailer gives too much away. The audience should be as surprised as we were when it played in Cannes – to not know much about it except that it’s a black and white, silent film. It is one of the most enjoyable cinematic experiences of my adult life. That sounds like I’m overstating it, but really, it’s just wonderful. It is a film that will make the top of the top tens.
Finally, a breath of fresh air. “The Artist” looks like the slap to the face/the kick in the balls Hollywood desperately needs and deserves. Except for “The King’s Speech” last year (which was absolutely exquisite), I haven’t gone to the movies (multiplex) regularly since 2008–honestly. It seems like every single month Hollywood endlessly punches out sex comedies and god-awful comic-book action flicks that I never waste my time seeing. I’m sick to death of it. Although I haven’t seen “The Artist”, I fully intend to when it is released (October 12, 2011). Thank you, Michel Hazanavicius (the director).

Hunger Games teaser trailer now out, and already I’m yearning for Kristen Bell as Katniss:

In the barren year of 2011, this stuff probably makes it in. Fortunately. MAINSTREAM audiences will simply Hurt Locker this into boxoffice oblivion. Bad enough that Weinstein is positioning himself for multiple Oscar contenders…

midnight in paris sucked like most of the woody allen crappy movies, i wish gets ditched deep somewhere and never gets a nomination. haven’t seen tree of life but the artist may strike a chord. i think if there’s no language it won’t go in foreign language but may have a chance in best picture.

I cried out of sheer nostalgia. The Artists is on my top 10 for this Fall / Oscar season and that says a lot for a huge Oscar buff that basically sees everything in contention.

Actually the best parts of a lot of BP nominees are when the dialogue goes away.
Too true. The car fire in CRASH. The “Nearer My God to Thee” sequence in TITANIC. The part in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE where I turned it off and mixed myself a big drink. Classic moments.

Aren’t there rules for not having silent films in the best picture category?
Why would there be?
If they insist on doing so, then put it in foreign language film, say, as France’s official entry.
Even if they did, for some reason, it would still be eligible for Best Picture. The two are not mutually exclusive. Remember CROUCHING TIGER?

the best part of WALL-E was a silent movie, right?

It looks really amazing. Almost revolutionary to do a silent film in 2011. Hope it gets a lot of attention.

I’m so sick of trailers that go beyond teasing and tempting the audience and give away the whole story. Not that you didn’t warn us, Sasha.
Frankly, I think this looks cutesy and gimmicky and vaguely annoying. I have a low tolerance for nostalgia porn. And it bugs me that 99% of people who go to this movie would never consider sitting through a Rene Clair or Ernst Lubitsch film. But I’m still very curious to see it, because I know how much positive reaction it has garnered, and I hope I am happily surprised and proved wrong.

The cinematography looks amazing in this trailer. On my “MUST SEE” list. Doesn’t hurt that the film won “Best Actor” at Cannes, and that Sasha has highly recommended it. The film should be an Oscar contender, n’est ce pas?

This looks very intresting. I want to see J. Edgar trailer to see how much trouble Leonardo is in. Hopefully he still takes it.

I think that, fortunately for The Artist, its release comes in an era when audiences will be more receptive to a look back at silent film than was the case for Singin’ in the Rain, which came out in the 50s when audiences were more interested in the new modernity than in inventive films about the Roaring 20s.

@Ryan Adams…. Watched City Girl last night and I really liked it….
I have to admit that I liked it more than F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise…. But I always had trouble with the abrupt shift in tone of that film….

Nah, not really…just a role reversal with a man being the one negatively affected by the change from silent to talkies.

Wow, Dujardin channels Errol Flynn! Really lovely trailer, maybe it could be shorter and less revealing but lovely nonetheless.

Looks like it’s just “Singin’ in the Rain” re-done as a drama and without color and sound.
And with a different story and themes! Otherwise, just the same!

Never realized how difficult it was to put down French pronunciation in English!!
Thanks for doing it! Very helpful. Maybe I’ll try to put it down in IPA if there are any linguistics geeks around here. 🙂

Maybe we can get a French volunteer to go ad these names to Forvo with recorded audio examples.
(sample: Apichatpong Weerasethakul )

The Tree of Life is the best FILM I’ve seen in almost 20 years.
I am bound to be disappointed next year.

Yep, it’s the same exact trailer, just with English titles instead of French. Despite how much it gives away, I still can’t wait to see it — probably my most anticipated film of the year.

This is the (almost) exact same trailer from earlier this year.

Looks fantastic. Btw, what’s that bit of music used for the second half? I wanted to say Atonement at first but I think it was just used in the Atonement trailer as well

I saw best picture written all over The Artist ever since it premiered at Cannes. I can’t wait to see it and I just found out that I’ll be in New York during the film festival. Yay!

The more I learn about this film the more excited I become about it. Its been such a long time since I’ve revisited so many of my old favorite silent films and their unique type of magic. I can’t wait to see this.

@TheGhostOfEaster.
Hello! Frenchman here.
You pronounce: Meeshell Ah-zah-nah-vee-ssiüss
Jean (well, difficult to put that one down but I assume you already know how to pronounce it – not like Gene, more like diJON mustard) Dü-zhar-dain (without the diphthong)
Bé-ré-neess Bé-zho (without the diphthong on the “o”)

This has gradually risen through the ranks to become my most anticipated film of the fall/winter. I cannot wait. In the meantime, I’ll take your Murnau recommendation, Ryan.
I also am beginning to think that THE ARTIST may emerge as the one to beat in just about every category it competes in. Until we start hearing from people who’ve seen WAR HORSE and the rest, it’s the juggernaut in the race.

By the way, There’s something that I wanted to ask ever since this project was anounced….Maybe for the French people here… How do you correctly pronounce the names of the director and the two main stars?

I am really anticepating this one…
And I am also glad to see that John Goodman still gets roles in good films from time to time…

I’m very interested in this movie, if the trailer gives too much away then I won’t see it. Can’t wait for it!

Sorry I had to watch bits and pieces of the trailer since I’ve heard nothing about the film. It looks very interesting. I just hope it plays in a theater near me.
Anyone who’s really jonsing for this movie before its premiere might want to check out FW Murnau’s 1930 City Girl to whet your appetite. It’ll help prepare you to rethink everything you thought you knew about silent films.
There’s a UK blu-ray that’s region free — so you’ll be watching a movie every bit as gorgeous as The Artist looks to be.
Michel Hazanavicius and Berenice Bejo have both said City Girl influenced how they approached The Artist.

OK, so I won’t watch it, although I saw another trailer for this film earlier this year, which didn’t exactly give a lot away, as far as I’m aware. This isn’t the same trailer, no?

This was one of the most beautiful films I’ve seen in a very long time.
I sincerely hope Midnight in Paris and The Artist BOTH get a Best Picture nomination.
