Well worth waiting up till 2 a.m. to post — now I have to resist the urge to stay up till 3 a.m. watching it 10 more times. See it in HD at iTunes, or speedier streaming after the cut. New poster out this week, as well.

Sasha Stone has been around the Oscar scene since 1999. Almost everything on this website is her fault.

The accents are absolutely a no-go… it’s terrible, even if I didn’t knew how the actors “normally” speak, it’s absolutely terrible. I mean, come on, does it make a movie better if someone actually talks with a totally ridiculous accent?
And that one scene where Craig drives along an alley? Either they mirrored the pic somehow or they didn’t know that in Sweden you drive on the same side as in USA…
As for the movie in itself, well, I think you have to see it completely, not just a trailer, to actually see if the actors do a good job. In my opinion, the swedish movie was brilliant, I absolutely loved the actors, they played the roles exactly as I had imagined them to be when I first read the books.
I think, Noomi Rapace did a very fine job portraying a troubled and violent young woman with a dark past and problems to commit.
How and if Rooney Mara can fulfill my high expectations remains to be seen.
May main concern since I saw the very first trailer is that they will probably fixate on the sexual relationships too much. The swedish original has short and powerful scenes, and in their trailer they have only one very short scene where you get an idea of a sexual relationship…. and in the trailer discussed here you are almost knocked out with them…

Oops touched a nerve when I said obsessing i was not referring to you specifically but to a general trend within the thread towards deciding which Lisbeth was hot or not or bisexual or not or a lesbian or not….:-)
As for tawdry I quite agree it is not a forbidden area…….slightly moving away from tawdry but not too far a point I would make is that there have been a couple of pointers towards a warping of the relationship between Lisbeth and Mikael.
The poster ‘Evil shall with evil be expelled’’ with Daniel Craig as the owner and Rooney Mara as the pet. Also in the trailer Daniel Craig does a passable James Bond when ordering Rooney Mara to get rid of her girlfriend……
and the photo shoot all good girl gone male fantasy…………

Alright, i’m hoping as much as you are Ryan, although to do some clarification myself I hadn’t even noticed the tracker .. :/
Alex! sorry I’m being so fractious. I dunno why I thought we were talking about the Contender Tracker. Itchy trigger-finger preemptive strike on my part. Apologies.

Just read other comments It would be funny if it wasn’t so so predictable.
Obsessing about Lisbeth being gay/bi/whatever or how hot she will appear really does not make interesting reading about the film/trailer…………………….

oh you’re right. I’m sure such tawdry issues never enter the minds of filmmakers
Obsessing about Lisbeth being gay/bi/whatever
Obsessing? Is that what I was doing? That Lisbeth is bisexual is a plain statement of fact. If anyone had doubt about that, I was trying to help clear up the confusion.

Mara is no comparison to Noomi, based on this trailer.

Gah, I don’t know, Ryan … this looks like it’ll suit their tastes more than say, Zodiac (although that not scoring any nominations at least was pretty … yeah), and definitely more than Seven. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. He’s becoming more and more of a household name and this looks to me to be his most “awards-typical” film to date – I don’t think that *anyone* was seriously considering Button, which was very pretty and well-made and crowd pleasing, but at least I couldn’t take it that seriously. And I say that even if this *is* a “thriller.” If Mystic River (which would have won any other year, it just HAD to be up against LoTR) and Silence of the Lambs had a love child, it looks like this would be it.
But even Social Network got all of the nominations at least that it deserved, and the “facebook” and networking theme isn’t typical Academy fare. Of course it should have gotten best director (best picture is much more debatable) but … I dunno, I have a feeling. Button got even more nominations than it really deserved.
I hope Dragon Tattoo is good enough for a dozen nominations. And I hope the Academy can wise up and do the right thing if it is.
No secret that I don’t have much faith in Oscar taste anymore. They’ve got to prove to me they do. And they couldn’t care less about proving anything to anybody.
Bottom Line: You guys please need to realize that the contender tracker is not about wild blind guesses. The tracker is only for movies that Sasha has seen and can judge with her own first-hand impressions. It’s not a buzz meter. It’s a genuine quality meter.
What do all the movies on the tracker have in common? Sasha has seen them all.
We go through this every year. Veteran readers on the site know that trying to lobby Sasha to include reader hopes and dreams on the Tracker has about as much effect as lobbying the Academy. Which is to say. not no effect at all — and in fact, has the opposite effect, because the Contender Tracker isn’t a pacifier intended to satisfy everybody’s demands.

Just for the record Chris, this isn’t a “remake.” It’s a different adaptation. And no, remakes are not “necessary.” Neither are films, for that matter. And neither are books. Or clothes. the list can go on and on.
Everyone’s beloved Departed is a remake. True Grit was a remake. No Country was effectively a film-based “remake” of a novel. I just don’t see where your argument stands…
“True Grit was a remake.”
I don’t think so. True Grit was a different adaptation, not a remake. True Grit went back to the novel and honored it more faithfully.
No Country was not a remake by any definition of the term.
I’m all in favor of remakes. Even the ones that don’t live up to the originals are interesting for the sparks they create between too artists with two visions of the same story.
I love Let Me In as much as I love Let the Right One In. I admire both versions of The Thing, and the first 2 versions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers are equally valuable.
I’ll probably get eaten alive for saying so, but I enjoyed Rod Lurie’s Straw Dogs more than Peckinpah’s. (we talk about both those in the next podcast, so getcher pitchforks sharpened)

Gahhhhh Ryannnn …. “We’re not feeling it’s the typical “Best Picture” nominee right now — but who knows what awards heat might be generated if it scores with critics and rises near the top of RT and metacritic charts.”
Gahhh how does this *not* look like an awards contender?? District 9 and Blind Side and Winter’s Bone were *certainly* not “typical best picture” nominees…even Black Swan was definitely not a typical nominee, and it sweeped through the major awards noms… help me here Sasha!!
The trailer looks brilliant. Absolutely so … I prefer the first trailer simply because I love the “fun”ness of it but obviously it was just a teaser and this one is just beautiful…December 21 cannot come soon enough … the first thing I do when I get home for winter break from college is going to see this. At the very worst, it will probably be brilliant, which alone should be enough for a best pic nom. Should it rake in the cash (if social network was able to do it, this certainly should), and should the performances shine (looks very likely from what we’ve seen so far, and from what you’ve reported, Sasha), then I have a feeling it will be a very strong force to be reckoned with come awards season. I think the only thing going against Mara right now is that she’s *such* a newcomer, kind of like Carey Mulligan (who should have totally won her year), and she’ll be up against some of the screen’s biggest stars assuming both Close and Streep are nominated.
Of course, maybe I’m just getting too ahead of myself, nobody’s seen the movie yet. It might flop or something.
…sure
Alex, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo looks like it could potentially be my favorite movie of 2011. The sidebar isn’t about my favorite movies, or Sasha’s personal favorites either.
I have no faith whatsoever in the Academy nominating a Fincher thriller, simply because they’ve never done it before — and that means they’ve missed nominating 2 or 3 of the greatest thrillers ever made. That makes them clueless about thrillers.
They have a problem with Fincher. I don’t get it. But I can’t deny it, can’t ignore it, can’t pretend their problem doesn’t exist.
I don’t have anything to do with the sidebar contender tracker. I don’t even bother Sasha with my suggestions. In the past I think the tracker was only for movies that Sasha had seen with her own eyes. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to say a movie or a performance is a contender before anybody sees it. Otherwise Dreamgirls and All the King’s Men would be Oscar winners.
What we do know is carrying David Fincher aloft on our shoulders like he’s Caesar for 5 months is not an effective strategy.
“We’re not feeling it’s the typical “Best Picture” nominee right now — ”
I should clarify. I don’t know what Sasha is feeling. Looking forward to finding out.
That royal “We” refers to me and my cat.
