I think this looks great. I’m more excited about it knowing it won’t be too dark or depressing. I think dismissing it because it has a lighthearted side isn’t fair, it could still be a great movie. It could still be expertly written, acted, and directed. Don’t we whine and complain every time a great comedy gets dismissed by the academy? This looks like it has lighter elements and everyone is dismissing it automatically. Why does a movie have to be totally serious or depressing to be a serious contender?
http://tiny.pl/hbbf7 probably Clooney with another Oscar !
Argo meets Inglourious Basterds meets Ocean’s Thirteen meets Cate Blanchett’s horrendous “French” accent.
Another overrated movie probably this isn’t an oscar contender anymore as well as Saving Mr. Banks.
I don’t get all the ARGO comparisons, unless we’re just merely talking about the fact that these guys have to save something (in Argo, the “thing” was people). To me, this looks a little like light, jokey, more honor-driven KELLY’S HEROES, rather than like Frankenheimer’s deadly serious THE TRAIN. I still expect it to be hugely entertaining (especially with that cast, and even though I didn’t find the trailer all that funny). However, in the frame of Oscar discussion, I do believe its stock has fallen just a bit. It doesn’t look like an Oscar-type film (in as much as we can characterize a film these days). I have a bell in my head, and it goes off whenever I see the first frame of a film destined for the the top Oscar spots. This bell is rarely wrong (in my lifetime, only with CRASH and ARGO has it really failed me). And, with this trailer, the bell rang only faintly, as if it were in the next county. But this don’t mean it’s not gonna be a movie worth seeing.
In Argo the light moments were organic to the narrative since we had Hollywood. But in this one, the jokes look unnatural, coming simply from a desire to be funny, and cool. Not a good start. But it’s just a start, of course.
where are the links to the butler reviews?
Is Sasha up yet? Bc reviews for Lee Daniel’s The Butler are pouring in and it’s looking pretty good, not stellar, but certainly good enough to cement its place in the oscar race. Still waiting for AD’s Oracle in Chief to tell us what’s what!
Work hard play hard.
In the meantime may I suggest this fantastic hour of Forest, Lee, Danny, and Oprah with Charlie Rose?

Hi Christophe, I’ve been camping but am at a Starbucks and getting ready to post…
PHILOMENA trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr88sVLxVeo
It took me this long to see it. Yesterday, it kept getting stuck for me even on youtube. IDK.
I don’t know exactly what it was going for but it looked okay. I didn’t mind the music. But it can’t be meant to be serious. They were all talking like modern times. Like when Matt was stepping on the landmine. That’s how we talk to each other now, not how they did then.
It’s actually completely different than what I thought I’d see. I don’t know now. Maybe I’ll like it. I usually don’t like Clooney’s movies. lol
I can see why people make the Argo comparisons, but to be fair, this trailer really doesn’t contain a tone resembling that of Argo.
Argo had a much more serious air about it, Affleck wanted people to take his film very seriously indeed. Clooney seems only interested in turning a serious (underexposed) story from a (overexposed) time in history and turn it into a light-hearted romp. I don’t think – no matter the grudges you bear against Argo’s Oscar win – that it is fair to lump the two of them together. Not based on this trailer, at least.
The comparisons to the Oceans’ franchise are more to the point.
With this trailer….
All the more reason to predict a BP win for Inside Llewin Davis.
Which also has John Goodman in it.
Seems a bit more Oceans Eleven then Argo…. I dont care what people say (and how many sags it wins) but Argo was really not an ensemble cast-movie, while this definitely will be (and a nice ensemble too)… It won’t win any awards thought….
I was in Ghent just a couple of weeks ago and while visiting Het Lam Gods i thought i heard on the touristy audiotour-thingy that the Belgians kept the painting out of German hands in the second world war… So why are they disassembling the painting in the trailer?
Clooney tries to do light-hearted/entertaining with important subject matter, seeing how it has worked with the Coens, Tarantino, and Affleck. I’m expecting the reception of De Niro’s “The Good Shepherd”.
Lacks the heft that a WWII film should have. Life couldn’t have been as easy-going as Clooney is trying to show especially for a team trying to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi. Argo was an entertainer, but it took itself seriously. We will have to wait and see if Monuments also tries to do same or it just entertains. If it’s the latter, I am afraid to say, it won’t be a serious contender at Oscars. May be few nominations but definitely no wins.
Guys, it’s a trailer. Some trailers are reflective of the movie, others miss the tone completely. Trailers are just marketing devices, nothing more.
True, but they are meant to whet your appetite, not kill it. My expectations dropped as a result of this trailer.
Wow, great minds think alike. 😀
True. But I’m not expecting much from the second one, or the whole movie. My expectations got really low right now. Maybe this is a very good thing.
why does this guy keep directing movies? what a waste of acting talent
Best Picture winner right here. This looks awesome, I dont know what all the commenters are thinking.
I need some of that stuff you have been smoking!!!!!!!!!
It’s Only the First Trailer, i’m sure the Second Trailer will deliver a more promising picture for everyone who are sceptics
Very true. First trailers always try to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Nevertheless. I’m kind of stunned to see that these lines and these scenes even exist in the movie all.
“six people? wow.”
“how about seven then?”
“oh much better!”
Damon: “uh-oh, I stepped on a landmine!”
Clooney: “well, shit.”
Goodman: “well, shit.” (refrain)
“What are we gonna do with all this art cargo??!”
“Cargo fuck yourself.”
You made up the last one, right? Because I really don’t want to suffer through a second viewing of that inanity to find that out…
First trailers always try to appeal to the lowest common denominator
Yeah, but that was at a frequency too low to be picked up by anyone except maybe elephants or whales.
Not only were the lines clunky, they were all delivered at the same level.
Hogan’s Heroes
The Argo sequel no one asked for. I was really excited for this film, but the trailer is really underwhelming.
This looks like a very old-fashioned studio picture. Not arch-knowing hipster style old fashioned, but just old fashioned. I dig that shit, Oscarbait be damned. You got Bill Murray and Bob F***ing Balaban, have some fun.
Haters will be haters, but I don’t mind being entertained by a film. (Movie, whatever. I find the distinction patronizing and unnecessary.)
Even that is not happening enough.
Yeah, I too wanted “The Pianist” to be a little more lighter. Everything was so sad in this movie. Enough with the depressing Chopin already. Give me some groovy music…
I liked The Pianist very much and I listen to Chopin as often as possible. I also admire Inglourious Basterds (though I generally dislike Tarantino movies) bc it was a very original and emotional experience.
Different movies, different styles. Nothing could be worse for film than to make every movie out of the same template and water them down with pop music and smart-ass jokes in order to coolify them.
Howzabout this is Clooney’s answer to Inglourious Basterds?
Oh my god. They can´t be serious… Is that for real? Did George Clooney actually think he could make a light version of Inglorious Basterds. He´s no Quentin Tarantino.Everything about this trailer is wrong. It´s pretty frustrating that they took the Argo-route for a WWII movie. Repulsive even.
Huh. I think it looks good actually. Best picture winner good? No. But I will be seeing it regardless if it has a bunch of awards buzz.
In a very weird way, ever since I heard about the plot of the film and George directing I always expected a goofy take on this.
And when people started calling it a drama I thought “well, could be could be”.
Guess my initial hunch was closer to the truth. I mean, the moment I read the synopsis I imagined something very typically American in the good and bad sense of term.
I’d love it if Blanchett is not nominated for this in Supporting so that the whole AMPAS body will be entirely focused on her “Blue Jasmine” excellence.
Tone seemed extremely light. I actually laughed. Wasn’t expecting that at all. May have to downgrade this a notch or two.
Not what I was expecting at all—I thought it was going to be more of a Dirty Dozen thing. This is Hogan’s Heroes.
Argo meets Ocean’s 11. This should be a very fine, enjoyable film with a very good cast. Let’s talk about its awards prospects after seeing it, okay?
Wow, everyone on AD seems to dislike this trailer with a vengeance! Maybe my twisted logic is dead wrong, but that makes me think that that’s exactly why this could be right up the Academy’s alley…
George playing George, Matt playing Matt, smug smug smug. Jean Dujardin gets about as much screentime as Cate Blanchett. Yuck yuck yuck. This is my least favourite trailer since Lone Survivor.
Ugh, Lone Survivor. I hear there is an uninterrupted action scene that leaves me intrigued but Berg lost a lot of goodwill for me (and now he is going around saying HE HAD TO DIRECT Battleship to get Lone Survivor greenlit) and Wahlberg is such a miscast as Luttrell (Oddly, Ben Affleck would have been pretty perfect casting physically-speaking).
I should just be happy that such a bleak story is getting made but nobody looks right for the role and nobody except Wahlberg is a bankable actor to begin with.
Have anyone ever noticed that it’s nearly impossible to attack people for being “smug” without coming across as just as, if not more arrogant yourself?
I don’t get the venom people have towards this trailer. It’s almost as if people are attacking it because it’s too “baity” and they want it to fail. I can almost guarantee it would still be attacked if it had a more serious tone, probably due to being “self-important”
It’s almost as if people are attacking it because it’s too “baity” and they want it to fail.
Or else some of us feel the chummy flatfooted ‘wit’ isn’t half as funny or debonaire as it thinks it is.
So it’s Argo the Prequel?
*yawn*
That’s a-Oscar bingo sheet on the screen!!!!!!!!!!!
I notice that nobody on social media is talking about it. It’s does not seem potentially bad like The Butler or intriguing like American Hustle or Her that got buzzed about it recent days for their trailers.
It seems like covered territory in many respects.
It needs to be said that Clooney has only made one truly good movie as a director. Getting the serious-as-a-heart-attack in the director’s chair in Affleck to do Argo may have been one of the greatest coups Clooney ever made in realizing that there was somebody who would not have been so consciously cutesy with that material. Because I think we realized what the results would have looked like otherwise.
This was never on my list and despite a few performers I like in the movie, it looks bland and easy to skip out on. This may be more of an Ides of March than a Argo this awards season. Nobody wants to see last year’s movie.
I actually expected this to be something like “Good Night, and Good Luck”.That movie was close to perfection. I want serious movies about serious issues, damn it. No audience friendly bullshit. I guess he had two options here: “Shall I make “Lincoln” or “Argo”? Henslov:”I want another Oscar, Bitch!” Clooney: “Alright, Argo it will be.”
That’s my issue too. I am not saying make it a Zero Dark Thirty but an All the President’s Men with maybe just one Jason Robards-like comic relief who also can play serious should be the model.
I actually think Affleck is a serious director, his other directing efforts have almost no ring of humor in them, while Clooney always comes off very cutesy with a lot of humor peppered in. Clooney did one movie where it was all dead-serious (Ides of March) and it failed. So he got a juicy, bait-y script but realized there was a balance and seriousness but realized at some point he could not do that so he passed it to Affleck. But I guess he also found a juicy story and script and wanted to make his own.
Clooney keeps telling the people who have visited the set that it the movie is based on the Frankenheimer/Lancaster movie, The Train. I see none of that in the trailer but that is because the trailer was all about the cast while The Train is a technical marvel in long-takes and editing. The question is: Can Clooney pull that direction off? He has never come across as technically-savvy the way Affleck does.

Not even close. I agree that Affleck’s grasp on the craft is superior to Clooney’s, but he’s still quite a few steps below a Frankenheimer. Dying to get my BD copy of SECONDS on the mail. I hope nobody crucifies me for saying this, but even though the subjects he’s interested in are kind of weird, Mel Gibson tops both Clooney and Affleck as an actor-turned-director.
*face-palming; typing with another hand*
High five to David O. Russell and Woody Allen — one more gone with the wind [hyperbole].
Back to face-palming, reclining attitude….
I don’t know. I guess I’m in the minority, but it looks fine. Comes off a bit more different than I expected, but that’s not a bad thing. I actually like the music choice. Terrific cast. Concept is there. Could be fun.
Although Ryan brings up a good point about Blanchett’s accent. Also the last time Clooney and her were in a period piece together….we got The Good German. Yuck. Sorry Soderbergh. Not one of your finest moments.
The pedigree is there, but I dont think this will be the major player people expected it to be.
LAME!!! Not enough gravitas and not enough Jean Dujardin, what a disappointment!
The last time Cate Blanchett slathered on an accent this thick we got Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
what I meant with “Blanchett with an accent” was actually someone with an accent because accent makes the role look more demanding so that she can get nominated for supporting role. they could have chosen French (or whatever) actress but she wouldn’t get nominated. this is made-for-Oscar movie and it needs to get into every category possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make a song for this (to get best song nomination)
She’s not quite the best at it, though I dug her Dylan and she did her best at Hepburn. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was not bad because of that accent and although her Good German accent was TERRIBLE, there are perfectly fine movies where her accent e.g. Benjamin Button is best left unsaid.
But, and unless you have not seen the movie I apologize in advance, her Julia Sugarbaker-esque Southern Belle accent in Hanna was definitely her most campy accent to date- which was why the film was such bubblegum pop joy for me.
Come on! She said like two words in the trailer.
And about the movie itself – I agree it seems very light, not so Oscary, but might be fun.
I didn’t like the trailer either but this has OSCAR written all over it: looks like WW2 Argo, Blanchett with an accent (guess Meryl was to old for the part)), Clooney being Clooney. and lets not forget John Goodman – he is now an important ingredient as well for Oscar success.
Goodman might be a good ingredient for Oscar success but he never even smells a part of it. One of the greatest (if no the best) american character actor is oscar-less but that Christophwhatever Waltz has TWO!!!
Christoph deserved BOTH.
Good God who chooses the music for these things? Looks awful, like Leatherheads-level awful.
the music is Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra feat. Nino Mochella – “Kiss The Sky”
because…
…anyone have any idea?
Jesus. This looks almost goofy. Call me very unimpressed.
Oceans Fourteen.
If it really does turn out to be in the vein of the Oceans movies I’d actually be more excited about it. As it stands it looks to me as if they’re either hiding the weightier stuff to try and sell it to a broader audience (ala Wolf Of Wall Street), or they’ve made more of a comedy then anyone expected. One thing’s for sure, I’m VERY curious about Bill Murray in this one. I’m getting a vibe from him in this trailer.
Bingo! Was the first thought in my mind after the trailer.
Looks mildly entertaining, nothing more. Take it off the Oscar buzz list.
Well that was underwhelming.
Underwhelming is right. And that music. They will test-screen the hell out of this to maximize AMPAS friendliness. Are they just testing the waters with this one? I bet Clooney shot enough footage to come up with 3 different tones, again testing how the AMPAS demograph responds. Looks like Jean Dujardin has too been commanded to come up with his best Roberto Benigni. This is the movie every single AMPAS member will see –or 99% of them. Heslov is lurking ready pounce.
Exactly. Everything down to the trailer music screams “Welcome to ARGO, PT. 2.” Don’t think I can take another year of Heslov doing this to us.
Yup. Expect -out of nowhere- Antebellum historians, NASA scientists, and Niall Ferguson to swiftly and diligently question the facts, authenticity, and ulterior messages in 12 YEARS A SLAVE, GRAVITY, and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.
I think your tinfoil hats are on too tight.
I don’t know what I was expecting but I don’t think it was that. I guess I thought it wouldn’t be have such light moments in it. Kind of hits the same tone as Argo
