Initial thoughts – it is already breaking my heart. Can there be an Oscar nomination for a horse?

I can’t. I just can’t. Is this the same teaser that was released a while ago? Or is this the real thing? I’m sorry but …. that was too much. Wayyyyy too much. Nic V, as much as I appreciate a good dramatic crying movie, this was …. no. I laughed half-way through it. But, you can never (well, yeah, you can sometimes) judge a movie by its trailer

You know what quit kicking around the schmalz cause like it or not that’s what movies are supposed to do. They’re supposed make you feel something. Some make you cry, some make you laugh, some challenge your moral code, some inspire some people to do things they never thought they could, and some even ignite some dormant brain cells. Every film does not need to be a Fellini or a Bergman or a Welles. Every film is not going to be Shame or Some Like it Hot. Those of you who keep whining about schamlz and people feeling something when they see a movie are beginning to sound like you haven’t got an ounce of feeling in your bones. And we know that’s not true.

Wow. The music is breathtaking. I hope Williams wins his 6th Oscar. He hasn’t won an Oscar in almost 20 years. 5 just isn’t enough for a man of his talent.

Is it just me or are trailers going extra schmaltzy this season? It seems like every trailer uses the same music and editing sequence.

Geremy, sir, you are talking out of your arse: “The whole reason War Horse is such a major hit on Broadway right now is because it uses animatronic puppetry to move multiple horses on stage at all times throughout the performance in a way that no one has ever combined robotics with theatre on the big stage before. While the story is good, it would not have come close to winning the Tony without the incredible technology, heck it may not have even gotten to Broadway.” You clearly haven’t seen the play, or are using terms that you don’t know the definition of. There are no ‘robotics’, no ‘animatronics’, no ‘incredible technology’ in the play. What you see on stage are puppets, pure and simple, made of cane and aluminium and tape. The most advanced technology in them is the use of bicycle brake cables. The amazing lifelike movements are due to the skill of the puppetmakers and the skill of the puppeteers – three men per horse.
And no-one has seen the film yet, so how you can say “The film, while I’m sure t’will be a tear jerker, does not contain the story” is beyond me. DreamWorks Studio has said the screenplay is based on both the 1982 book and on the stageplay based on the book. Apart from what we see in the two trailers, we don’t know more than that.

Spielberg has EPIC written over himself this year.
New footage from Tintin: http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=32144
But how far will Tintin go in America? It will be huge in Europe, for sure, but will that be enough? I’m still guessing close to 800M worldwide.

And yet both are Oscar nominees. Lee Hall for Billy Elliot and Richard Curtis for Four Weddings and a Funeral.

^@The Great Dane and Sasha….ditto on The Color Purple. That reunion had me sobbing uncontrollably (snotty nose, red eyes and everything). With Spielberg again, I’m gonna fall for this movie big time.

But whatever, it’s Spielberg, and his failures are more intersting than 90% of Hollywood’s successes. Can’t wait.

Wow! Great Cinematography (almost definite). Great Score (maybe). But a great film? Not really … in my eyes. The reason: I don’t buy it. And it’s not so much about the tearjerking scenes (I actually like cheesy films), it’s more about this particular story idea of a horse in World War One. It wants to look epic but all in all it only looks: Ridiculous. But that’s just my opinion.
(By the way. There would have actually been a much better line at the end for this kind of film/trailer, with the horse looking into the camera: “Hi, my name is Ned.”)

In the animal category, is everyone forgetting that ‘Beginners’ has an even better supporting actor than Christopher Plummer? The dog in that was the best Jack Russell in the movies since ‘Bringing Up Baby’ in 1938.

Since I’ve seen the first images of the film I kept being reminded of another movie: THE LEGENDS OF THE FALL.
That movie looked as great as WAR HORSE looks in the trailers. John Toll won the Oscar for cinematography.
The production values for LEGENDS were top notch. The movie, however, sucked big time.
The most important thing for a good movie is something that cannot be shown in any trailer: The script.
Bad script = bad movie. It’s that simple.

Looking bland all the way. Here’s hoping the film is a little more intimate and unique.

Geremy, the reason the puppets work is that, if they mistreated an actual animal so much on stage, audiences would walk out.
and that’s the question…… will Speilberg have to hold back from showing the torture Joey endures because we won’t be able to stand seeing it on film?
The story and the play are as powerful a statement about war as The Hurt Locker…. we identify with the horse and experience the brutality of war directly as animals, without human rationalizations. We don’t know yet whether Speilberg will be able to achieve the right balance between truth and squeamishness…. if that’s possible.

I think the best we can hope for is a “Black Beauty” like movie, plus great cinematography, score and battle scenes; which in all fairness would be just fine with me.

Sarina, I couldn’t agree more: such a waste of talent in the case of Emily Watson (after her breathtaking turns in Breaking The Waves and Hilary And Jackie).
This movie looks AWFUL! I hate movies that stars animals in leading (or even supporting) roles. This is gonna suck so bad…

Jake, it’s funny you say that. I was just thinking, wouldn’t it be wild if it all boils down to Dragon Tattoo v. War Horse? That would be quite a match up from two very different directors but both masters at what they do.
If Spielberg pulls this off, I’ll be an utter mess in the theater. And if he pulls it off, I could so easily see this movie being huge at the box office and with the Academy. I’m not saying I believe it’s going to happen. But all the pieces are there for Spielberg to have a gigantic success with this. We’ll just have to see. I can’t wait for some kind of actual word on it from people who’ve seen it.

I think it looks great. The only part that was a bit too much was the, “Be brave…. Be brave….. BE BRAVE!!” at the end. We get it, geesh.

Yeah, it looks treacly and soppy, but I’m a complete sucker IF it’s well done (guilty pleasure confession) which they almost never are. I expect this to be audience manipulation at its best – the master of which is directing. I look forward to humiliating myself in public, praising the technology and skill behind it, then damning the movie – and myself – for the wallow. Could be the biggest sobfest since Hachi, a Dog’s Tale. I’ll also, if asked, deny I ever admitted to this failing.

It could be an Animal Planet faceoff at the Oscars, between the horse and The Artist’s dog.
Lovely visual and aural appeal: cinematography and score noms without a doubt. I cried at the first trailer, but now I’m feeling a bit of schmaltz overkill. Even as a horse-lover, not sure I can take all this sentiment, LOL.

The thing I don’t see mentioned enough is that War Horse – rather than Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – should get the British votes. And probably will, cause it’s a very English story. Based on a 30 year-old novel, but people pretty much only refer to the plays.
Even Spielberg works so often in England that he’s been knighted and stuff…

The usual schmaltz and it annoys me that, once again, Emily Watson is going to be wasted in a film, since this is about the horse and the boy. It just seems that, after Hilary and Jackie, she’s been stuck in supporting roles or bad TV Movies.
This film seems to be more like a cross between Son of Lassie and Black Beauty. I’m honestly not excited about it. It is the usual manipulative corn Steven Spielberg tends to provide.

Rin Tin Tin technically won Best Actor in the 1st Oscar ceremony (he received the most votes)…but the Academy obviously wanted a better image, so they went with the esteemed foreign veteran, Emil Jannings, instead

I gonna weep like a baby when the horse finally comes home (if it does – don’t ruin it for me, haven’t seen the play). The two reunion scenes that make me cry the most are the endings of The Color Purple and A.I. – both Spielberg, so I am SO getting ready to cry my heart out again…
Great Dane, me too. This is just the kind of thing that makes me sob hysterically. It’s going to get ugly if/when I go to see this. I’m going to have to make sure to sit completely alone so that I don’t horrify people next to me. That baby horse and then the war and then, oh god.

It is cheesy, but Oscar will eat this up like crack. I’m not gonna lie, it sounds and looks gorgeous. However, at least to me, it seems a tad formulaic for my tastes. I don’t mean that in a sense of narrative or plot, but in all of it. In fact, it seems like a bit E.T. with a horse.

Trailer 2 – now with more dialogue. That’s why. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s probably going to be the title with the MOST nominations.

I don’t know about the Academy, but this film is going got be absolutely effin’ huge. Gargantuan. The repeat business will sweep everything else away come the new year. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Spielberg’s first billion dollar movie (and please, feel free to remind me I said that if I’m wrong).

Pretty but hella cheesy. While watching the trailer I was a bit worried I might be bored by all the beauty (like in Atonement) but lack of any human emotional connect. It looks like everything is posed for maximum aesthetic impact.

Perhaps they should give the horse a special award, only instead of a statuette, they give it a crapload of hay, something the horse will actually want.

And IMO no other composer has given his movies such identity that is the VERY reason why they became hits. For example, Star Wars – some 30% of its success must be due to Williams’ themes rather than screenplay etc… If I’m humming the theme of Jaws (while swimming) to someone who has not even seen the movie, that someone knows it means “shark”.

Even though Williams has 45 nominations and 5 wins (He’s kinda like Streep = everyone thinks he has more oscars than he does), I think he deserves a special Oscar in recognition for all he has done for film music. My life has been completely enriched and changed by his music!

It has to be John Williams’ score, otherwise someone would’ve recognized it being something else already. Same with Tintin. Both sound good, but Williams have had a three year break. So, no wonder.

There is something about this movie that I am just not buying. I can see it opening to decent reviews (with some glowing reviews), but ultimately I think that this will be disappointing. I can see it getting nominations but not being a serious contender at all. Still think THE ARTIST and THE DESCENDANTS have nothing to worry about.

Are we sure the music from this trailer was a Williams snippet from the film? Usually they use stock music for trailers, but if this is Williams and from this movie, damn does it sound good, wonder if it would be available before the film coming out?

When Spielberg goes epic drama, it will not go Australia way. Even the much maligned Empire of the Sun was up for 6 Oscars. They are technically so good. Even if War Horse gets bad reviews, it will still get at least 5 or so nominations.
Australia was nominated for only one Oscar. If you want to bet that War Horse will be up for one Oscar tops? Then, I’ll take that bet.
I can’t remember the Oscars of 1988, but when I saw Empire of the Sun, it changed my life. I’m eternally grateful for that movie, and I can’t see it if it sucks.

Other than a nod for Emily Watson, i’m not so sure about this, it could very well go the Australia way. In my opinion this is in the same vein as Empire of the Sun (a fantastic film) and that wasn’t even nominated, refresh my memory how did that happen, i’m too young to remember.

I’m so with @menyc. Can I have some brisket with that schmaltz? Not just one but two women weeping. but I am always on the unpopular end of the spectrum with these Spielberg schmaltzathons. Be brave. Film on, mighty cameraman that’s the best money can buy.

Gorgeous (Kaminski very VERY strong contender for cinematography. That whole trailer is a FYC) and heartbreaking (got goosebumps from John Williams’ Score combined with the footage)… Love it. And yes, I am a Spielberg fanboy, and it does hit all the right notes for “you will cry”… But hell. It works… 🙂

More than any trailer in some time, this made me laugh out loud.
At the end, all I could muster is… Seriously, you’ve GOT to be kidding.

This trailer proves EXACTLY why I have a strong feeling about The Help NOT making the cut in the best picture category. After (probably) voting for SEVERAL (potentially) financially succesful tearjerkers/crowdpleasers from ‘name’ directors (Spielberg, Daldry, Allen, Payne, not to mention at-the-moment strong contenders The Artist and Moneyball), the Academy might be done with the “feelgood” and ignore the critically-liked-but-definitely-not-loved summer hit, that was ‘The Help’.
The fact is when it comes to “feelgood” contenders, the others either have considerably better reviews (Midnight in Paris, Moneyball) OR considerably MORE Academy-friendly release dates (War Horse, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Artist, The Descendants) and ALL have great Box Office-potential. So all in all, The Help only has the Box Office, but the lack of raves and the early release date might be damaging factors hard to overcome…especially if there are SEVERAL other viable ‘heart’ contenders in the mix…

Michael Morpurgo was the guest speaker at one of my school’s end of year award presentations a few years back and he was truly inspirational. Can’t wait for the film. Wonder if it will tap into that “Blind Side” family audience and be huge.

Wow, I’m totally sold on this film. Looks stunning in every possible way 😀 I’m still not convinced by the film’s acting cast thought.

Come on. Nothing else looks like that this year. It’s gonna have to really stink to not win. Unless everyone hates Spielberg. I mean, LOOK AT IT!!!
