The NYTimes has excerpts from Woody Allen’s “Spanish Diary” during the production of Vicky Cristina Barcelona. A few excerpts from the excerpts:
MARCH 5
Met with Javier Bardem and Pen√©lope Cruz. She’s ravishing and more sexual than I had imagined. During interview my pants caught fire. Bardem is one of those brooding geniuses who clearly will need a firm hand from me.
APRIL 2
Offered role to Scarlett Johansson. Said before she could accept, script must be approved by her agent, then by her mother, with whom she’s close. Following that it must be approved by her agent’s mother. In middle of negotiation she changed agents ‚Äî then changed mothers. She’s gifted but can be a handful.
JUNE 5
Shooting got off to a shaky start. Rebecca Hall, though young and in her first major role, is a bit more temperamental than I thought and had me barred from the set. I explained the director must be present to direct the film. Try as I may, I could not convince her and had to disguise as man delivering lunch to sneak back on the set.
Pure unadulterated Woody, and a hilarious reminder why he’s been nominated 14 times for the Best Screenplay Oscar.
I agree that Allen’s writing is great, and I feel the VCB screenplay shows great maturity and depth that doesn’t hit one over the head. This film can be absorbed on several levels.
Although the “brooding” Bardem seemed just a bit subdued in his performance, I think that this was intentional — that his portrayal was true to the character. I hesitate to go into details for fear of committing a spoiler.
This is really terrific! I laughed out loud many times. Woody can (still)
certainly write.
This is hilarious. Woody can still write like nobody’s business.

Can’t wait for VCB in HD. Love Woody’s writing, so would have been nice to have more entries on this “journal” eheh

While at one time, the Woodman was playing the same kind of Oscar game as George C. Scott, condemning every tenet of the contest, in recent years he has warned up to them, and he apparently sees the benefit of nominations. I am not a big fan of this film, but as always I wish him the best.
Woody Allen is fantastic. If there were 100 more entries, I would have read them all!

It seems clear that Woody actually wants an Oscar for this one. I think he’s got a real shot at Original Screenplay and Penelope Cruz has to win Best Supporting Actress.

He’s creepy-Hilarious. But you can tell, most had fun making the movie.
Love it!!
“She’s ravishing and more sexual than I had imagined. During interview my pants caught fire.”
Is this for real? lol
Why can’t he be this funny at the movies anymore?
“AUG. 20
Made love with Scarlett and Penélope simultaneously in an effort to keep them happy. Ménage gave me great idea for the climax of the movie. Rebecca kept pounding on the door, and I finally let her in, but those Spanish beds are too small to handle four, and when she joined, I kept getting bounced to the floor.”
