The parched anticipation drought wets up this week with three great trailers for War Horse, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Last night The Social Network dominated at the Golden Trailer Awards.
“The Social Network” came away the big winner at the 12th Annual Golden Trailer Awards tonight with four wins, including the top prize, Best in Show. The last trailer to win so many was “The Matrix” back in 1999.
“The trailer for ‘The Social Network’ lures you into the drama of the movie without any of the usual selling points in a trailer — its famous writer, or even the name of its famous subject—but you come away knowing exactly why you want to buy a ticket.” (Dave Lewis, HitFix)
Like the wordless trailer for Alien, mentioned yesterday by Twitter friend Anne Billson, the most effective trailers are the ones that break the rules (which makes you wonder why so many follow the same numb formula.) My favorites would have to include Psycho, The Exorcist, The Matrix, Jaws, Taxi Driver and the terrific PSA teasers for Fight Club, after cut.
I love how the trailer for La Dolce Vita turned its trailer into a tabloid slideshow of paparazzi shots.
Last night Fincher’s “The Social Network” won Golden Trailer honors for:
Best in Show Award
Best Drama Award
Most Original Award
Best Music Award
