Benedict Cumberbatch plays Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, a story of a gay mathematician who helped invent a machine that ultimately cracked the Nazi code Enigma. That invention would lead to the modern day computer. Turing was prosecuted for being a gay man, given the choice of chemical castration vs. prison. He chose the drugs, to his detriment. Cumberbatch is brilliant in the role, bringing hopeless and despair to a man born out of his time.
