There are few better ways of looking stupid than trying to predict the Palme d’Or. Unlike the Oscar race where there is history and precursors to be factored in to a prediction, the Cannes jury is different every year and they also have to reach an absolute majority of votes for the winners.
My picks are entirely a shot in the dark and reflect more a cross section of the movies I think will be rewarded rather than an absolute conviction of which specific movie will get which awards.
The awards are supposed to be announced at 8:45 pm in Cannes which is 11:45 am Pacific.
Enjoy the comedy after the jump:
Palme d’Or: Mommy, Xavier Dolan
Grand Prix: Leviathan, Andrey Zvyagintsev
Best Director: Damián Szifrón, Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales)
Best Screenplay: Mr. Turner, Mike Leigh
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard, Two Days One Night
Best Actor: Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
Jury Prize: Timbuktu, Abderrahmane Sissako
(Ed. Note: I’m reminded that each film can only win one award except in certain categories and only by special dispensation of the festival director, so I changed Grand Prix from Foxcatcher to Leviathan)
