Love Mike Leigh, his movies and these clips. Thanks, Ryan!
WW, I distinctly remember Mike Leigh accepting his BAFTA for Vera Drake in person, but I may be misremembering. Perhaps the BAFTAs were then held in a different venue, or either he is or I am incorrect.
Also, my broadcast ended with Mike Leigh’s Fellowship award. Normally the BAFTAd end with the Fellowship award both on air and in reality, I believe. Are the British and international broadcasts different?
Thanks for posting this clip. An earlier poster had mentioned that Mike Leigh had given a shout-out to ”Boyhood.” But when I saw the BAFTA telecast, I never heard Leigh mention ”Boyhood.” Now I know why. It got cut. Here’s what Leigh said: ”It’s great to share the stage with a number of truly independent films, but especially tonight’s winning film, ”Boyhood,” a definitive independent film for which Dick Linklater and his team can be justly proud.”
I also suspect the BBC adjusted the running order for broadcast. On air, the BAFTAs end with Best Film. But since Leigh refers to ”tonight’s winning film,” I’ll assume that the evening ended with HIS honor.
Leigh also mentions that he’s ”never been on this stage.”’ Does that mean that he’s never been to the BAFTAs? IMDB says Leigh’s been nominated about a dozen times, and won 3 of them (for ”Vera Drake” and ”Secrets and Lies”).
One of the best filmmakers in the world. An international treasure!
Great stuff! Thanks!
What a treat! Thanks, Ryan.
