What a great year 1978 was, when the Deer Hunter went up against Coming Home. Two movies about Vietnam from different points of view. While I think The Deer Hunter deserved to win, Craig Kennedy and Ryan Adams are on the side of Coming Home.

It was also the year Scorsese made The Last Waltz, ignored by the Oscars.

on Tue, May 7, 2013 | By Sasha Stone

This week we had much to talk about but decided to keep it as one long podcast rather than divide it up into two. I don’t know who would ever want to listen to two hours of this but we seemed to have a lot to say this week.

Steven Soderbergh and the State of Cinema and Oscar year 1977 – Annie Hall, Star Wars and Vanessa Redgrave.

Episode 28 – Rocky Takes It

on Tue, Apr 30, 2013 | By Sasha Stone

1976 is one of the more compelling Oscar years on record because Rocky, a great movie by most accounts, beat three of cinema’s best ever – All the President’s Men, Network, Taxi Driver and you might as well throw in Bound for Glory. Have a listen.

Craig Kennedy, Ryan and I discuss 1975. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest swept the awards and it was no surprise. It was time for vindication for Jack Nicholson who had been snubbed for Chinatown and the Last Detail. Have a listen!

Oscar Podcast Episode 26 in Two Parts

on Tue, Apr 16, 2013 | By Sasha Stone

For some reason, this week’s Oscar Podcast was too long for one episode so we’ve split it in two.

In Episode One we cover 1974, the year the Godfather Part II beat Chinatown – the same year Coppola was nominated for Best Picture (as producer and writer or co-writer) in the same year. He may be the only filmmaker in history to do that. Only one Director nod but still.

In Episode Two we talk about Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder and the doc Room 237.

Oscar Podcast Episode 25 – An Ebert Tribute

on Mon, Apr 8, 2013 | By Sasha Stone

Craig, Ryan and Sasha talk Ebert for the whole hour and pay our respects.
