Oscar Podcast Episode 16

Predicting the Golden Globes!

Craig, Ryan, Erik and I all give our reactions to this year’s Oscar’s nominations and we also predict the Globes.  There is always going to be something sloppy and dirty about our Globes predictions and we like that.

Sasha it’s so weird how you’re taste in music is so current and eclectic. I mean no offense at all is just that I thought you would be the last person listening to Beach House!

Sorry Sasha, you complain that people disregard stats to support their argument of who they want to win, then you leave out BAFTA because it doesn’t support your argument on Lincoln

Sasha! I thought you said you liked Les Mis…?

    Hey, Sasha…

Perhaps you oughta pay more attention when you watch movies.

You implied that Deniro’s mini-speech to Cooper at the end was what convinced him to run after Lawrence. That is not the case.

When Cooper walked over to his ex-wife, his intention from the get-go was to tell her goodbye and then confront Lawrence with his feelings. He didn’t pull a 180 once his father gave him the pep talk. You’re biased as hell. What the fuck were you watching?

Here’s why Silver Linings and Argo could win.

DGA is big, but it’s not the be-all-end-all this year.

So what if 300 out of 5700 didn’t squeeze Affleck in or squeaked ORussell in. IMO, Affleck still had a lot of people vote and I’m sure he just missed.

Ans …. 15000 in DGA don’t. Vote. For. The. Oscar. 5400 other people who aren’t in the directors branch …do.

Who’s to say that those 5400 and quite a few of the 300 in directors branch won’t vote for Argo or SLP?? I mean, why not?

I want Lincoln to win. I think it deserves to win. I think it also deserves actor, supp actor, writng, etc..

But there is support for SLP. And I think there a lot of 5400 in the academy who are outraged by what the directors did and will throw support to Affleck for Best Picture, and they probably love it anyway.

Am I completely out of line with that?

I think that some people are underestimating Life of Pi a little bit.

I didn’t even love the film. But … 11 noms. That’s more than Slumdog. And that film didn’t have acting nominations, either.

The box office is VERY impressive.

I think Ang Lee is wildly respected. I bet Pi wins no less than 3-4 oscars … At least.

And it could benefit from a lot of Lincoln, Argo, SLP splitting.

    What an exciting race.

I mean, from a “who wins best director” standpoint, I think Ang Lee and Spielberg are the 2 strongest options, as well.

I agree John. Pi is my dark horse pick, though I’m still predicting Lincoln for the Oscar

    Ryan sounds like Alexander Skarsgard.

Sasha — LOVE that you opened with that gorgeous Beach House song! And I’ve never heard your voice before but you were made to do radio!

Now I’ll listen to the podcast.

So much hate for Silver Linings Playbook in this Podcast. Lincoln would be the third boring, predictable win in a row. I’m not just hating on Lincoln because it would be predictable, but it had many flaws and I think SLP is better.

I’d love to see Silver Linings Playbook win. I still think Lincoln will. People keep calling it an unpredictable year, but we really don’t know how predictable the winners will be just because the nominations through us for a loop. Once Lincoln wins PGA and DGA, it won’t be a predictable year anymore. ::sigh::

Funniest moment of the podcast – Sasha says she refuses to dump on Silver Linings. Rest of the episode is them dumping all over Silver Linings and Les Mis. Have to agree with Tonyr as well…Silver Linings is only like my 5th favorite nominee, but that is not at all what happens at the end.

I watched Silver Linings again and I have to say the second half is insufferable since the first half was very good, almost classic David O. Russell. I mean is this what we’re going to get from David O. Russell now? I’m not saying he shouldn’t evolve as a director, but SLP was the opposite of evolving. While I liked The Fighter quite a bit, I think he was bit by the Oscar bug and he’s now gonna make movies that he thinks will win awards (in which they might).

I loved Argo and hated ZDT. They are very different.

” HE OWNS THE POLICE” I fucking love you Sasha, your film reverences are both hilarious and historically spot on.

Keep Erik as a regular!!! He is the only reason I listen to your podcast. Also, the southern gentleman reminds me of my grandfather, which is awesome.
