Then, Megan’s back from the Savannah Film Festival. We talk about what she saw and who she talked to while covering the festival for Awards Daily.

Finally, we talk about the films we’ve seen outside of the festival circuit. Everyone has finally seen Parasite. We rave about Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed masterpiece (SPOILERS) and pose the question, “Can it win Best Picture?” We also talk about a few other films we’ve seen individually.

With Megan away covering the Savannah Film Festival for Awards Daily, Awards Daily’s very own David Phillips joins us to present one of his very favorite horror films: David Fincher’s 1995 classic Se7en. Starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, Se7en is about as dark and brooding as it gets. The film tells the story of a serial killer making his way through the seven deadly sins, victim by victim. We dive into the film’s near 25-year legacy – what makes it great and why the Academy nearly completely ignored it. Plus, why is this one of David’s Favorite Movies?

Before jumping into the darkness, Joey and Clarence talk about HBO’s new Mrs. Fletcher.

We’re back at the Water Cooler this week finally ready to chat about two major fall films. Judy premiered in late September to strong reviews and raves for Renee Zellwegger’s lead performance. Plus, we talk about the brewing Renee Zellwegger versus Charlize Theron battle ahead. Then, everyone’s talking about Joker. It’s a huge box office hit. It’s inspired hundreds of think pieces. People are now proclaiming the film a Best Picture nominee and star Joaquin Phoenix a slam dunk to win Best Actor. We start our conversation with our personal reactions to the film. We then look at the probability around its Oscar chances.

But first, Clarence and Joey each attended film festivals. They talk about the films they’ve seen, what they loved, and what they didn’t. Also, Megan previews her upcoming trip to the Savannah Film Festival.

Timothy Greenberg, the creator of Netflix’s newest comedy Living With Yourself, won an Emmy as a producer on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. But that’s not where he started his career. You’d be surprised to know his entertainment business journey started as a CG artist-animator on Riven, the sequel to the hugely popular PC game Myst. Also directing some of the live-action sequences in the game, Greenberg’s career flourished as a producer on The Daily Show which saw him filming sequences in Iran.

It’s quite an unusual and varied career trajectory, and his latest venture is Netflix’s Living With Yourself. What was the philosophy behind it all?

“There was no overriding philosophy. It was pretty much follow where the path leads,” Greenberg explains in our podcast interview. “Each step was pretty random other than I tried to work on things I really liked.”

Lately, marriage and parenting have caused Greenberg to think more deliberately about his career path. Those two major life also inspired the new Paul Rudd comedy Living With Yourself. The Netflix series, dropping Friday, October 18, details the struggles of Miles Elliot (Paul Rudd), an ad guy who’s lost the magic spark that once drove his successful career. Faced with pressures to compete at work and deliver a family at home, Miles travels down a usual path of his own.

On our Water Cooler Podcast conversation, Greenberg talks in more depth about his career choices and how those choices brought him to Living With Yourself. He also talks about the process of working with the great Paul Rudd and directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine).

Be sure to check back with Awards Daily for continuing coverage on Living With Yourself. Until then, enjoy this interview with Timothy Greenberg, creator of the Netflix comedy series which drops October 18 on Netflix.

Author, screenwriter, and producer Tom Perrotta joins Clarence at the Water Cooler to talk about his latest project, HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher.

Clarence flies solo at the Water Cooler this week. Fear not, he’s joined by one of his very favorite authors, screenwriters, and producers – Tom Perrotta – for the 255th episode. Tom Perrotta’s work was last seen on HBO in the critically acclaimed drama series The Leftovers. But on October 27, Perrotta brings another creation to the small screen in the limited series Mrs. Fletcher. Starring the great Kathryn Hahn in the title role, Mrs. Fletcher explores the empty nest, independence, gender identity, sex and the #MeToo movement in an enticing and thoughtful seven episodes, each directed by a woman.

Here, Perrotta talks about his original inspiration for the novel, initiated by his own empty next transformation.

“It’s a sad moment but it’s also an opportunity,” Perrotta admits. “You’re not old, but you’re not young either. There’s this new era beginning. That just became the autobiographical impulse for the novel.”

Additionally, Perrotta talks about the evolving sexual revolution which now includes matters of gender identification, a theme that runs through the novel. Perrotta also talks about working with Kathryn Hahn and the sadness about co-star Cameron Boyce’s cut-too-short life.

Be sure to check back with Awards Daily for continuing coverage on Mrs. Fletcher. Until then, enjoy this interview with Tom Perrotta, creator, and co-writer of the HBO limited series which premieres October 27 only on HBO.
