The Cooler Gang reviews the 2019 Golden Globes ceremony, its winners, and its ability to forecast the 2019 film and TV awards season. Plus, Netflix’s Bird Box and Bandersnatch.

So, how about them Golden Globes? First and foremost on our minds today is the 2019 Golden Globes ceremony. In a rarity, the ceremony was much more entertaining for the mostly left-field winners on both the film and television sides. We dish the ceremony, its hosts, and its speeches. Plus, where will the winners land at the 2019 Oscars and Emmys? Will the Golden Globes prove a reliable predictor of future awards glory? Or is this another The Affair? Then, we chat about a few recent streaming projects we’ve seen. First up, does Sandra Bullock’s phenomenon Bird Box warrant the obsession? Second, which approval path will we take with Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch?

The Cooler Gang gathers to reveal their favorite television shows of 2018 on the last podcast of the year.

We’ve reached the end of another year. As we close out 2018, the Cooler Gang of Megan, Joey, and Clarence look back at the best television of 2018. What shows did they jointly enjoy? Which shows were unique among the three lists? What shows made their honorable mention lists, missing the top 10 by a hair? And what did each pick as the very best television show of 2018?

But first, we spend a few minutes catching up with the movies we saw over the Christmas movie-going window.

The Cooler Gang discuss Megan’s Volume 6 entry in the Our Favorite Movies series, Silver Linings Playbook. Plus, they list their favorite episode of 2018 television.

On today’s podcast, Megan presents her Volume 6 entry in the Our Favorite Movies series. David O. Russell’s 2013 Best Picture nominee Silver Linings Playbook perhaps best represents Russell’s odd sensibilities. Mixing romantic melodrama with comedy, the film was warmly received by critics and audiences. It eventually won Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar for the role. After five years since its original release, Megan asks Joey and Clarence to revisit the film and whether or not their original reactions to the film still stand. Particularly outside of the heat of the 2013 Oscar season. Finally, where does Silver Linings Playbook stand in the David O. Russell canon?

But first, the Cooler Gang looks back over 2018 television and selects their single favorite episode of television. Next week, they unveil their Best of 2018 Television lists in the last podcast of the year.

We’re looking back at the TV shows we gave up in 2018. Plus, the Screen Actors Guild has spoken. Who benefited the most on the TV and film fronts?

This week, we’re warming up for our annual Best of TV list. But you’re not going to see the shows we’re talking about today on next week’s podcast. We are talking about what TV shows we quit in 2018. These could be long-running series that we’ve finally abandoned. Or these could be limited series we started and just never finished. Were these bad television shows? Definitely not. They’re just not shows that kept our interest with the highly competitive television market. Are we missing out? Feel free to weigh in on the comments!

But first, we’re taking a look at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild awards in both television and film. What series did the SAG voting body push forward into the new Emmy season? What were the notable omissions? On the film front, which films benefited from the actors weighing in?

A slight scheduling change for the podcasts leading up to the end of the year. Monday, December 24, will feature Megan’s Volume 6 entry in the Our Favorite Movies series, Silver Linings Playbook. Then, before the end of the year, we will drop our final podcast of 2018 with our Best Television Shows of 2018 lists.

Patricia Clarkson speaks to Clarence, Joey, and Megan about her incredible performance on HBO’s Sharp Objects.

In Gillian Flynn’s twisted thriller, Sharp Objects, Adora Crellin is watchful danger. When HBO announced they were adapting Flynn’s debut novel into a limited series, chatter exploded about who would play the three meticulously drawn lead women. Director Jean-Marc Vallée found the perfect casting in Patricia Clarkson as Adora. It’s one of the best roles of her long, celebrated career. Awards giving bodies wildly approve: Clarkson received Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild awards for her work in Sharp Objects in the past week.

Adora emerges from the shadows when Camille, her eldest daughter (played by the equally incredible Amy Adams), makes an unannounced return to her childhood home. She looks at Camille with exhausted surprise, an amaretto sour clutched in her hand. Her delicacy is evident from the first time we see her, but we aren’t prepared for what a fierce woman Adora is. There is a toughness that Clarkson threads through her entire performance, but she keeps it as a guarded weapon. Adora’s daughters don’t know that they might be on the receiving end of her poisonous maternal drive.

“It is three women that are not wonder women. Three women–and we have our flaws. It’s valuable to tell the stories about imperfect women as it is to tell those of heroic women. They all have value. I was thrilled to be part of a miniseries that was written by a woman, produced by women, starring women. I’m overwhelmed.”

She’s not a mustache twirling villain, though. Adora is always watching whomever is around her, and you always feel Clarkson’s gaze even when the camera isn’t on her. Her stillness feels threatening. Whenever Calhoun Day is mounted on the Crellin property, you wonder if she is lurking in the background of every shot. Your eyes wander because you’re afraid that the characters on screen might say something that could disrupt her festive celebrating.

Clarkson was thankful and eager to play Adora, and you can hear in her voice how much she loves her. She keeps Adora’s secrets to herself, but she always reminds us how important a character like this is. The darkness isn’t lost on her in the slightest (despite how absolutely lovely she is to listen to). Listening to her speak, you will thank your lucky stars that Adora Crellin was in the hands of an absolute professional. A lesser actress wouldn’t have done her justice. It’s a beautifully wicked performance that sneaks up on you.

Team ADTV looks at the 76th Annual Golden Globe nominations in television and film. What impact will the Globes have on next year’s Emmy or Oscar race?

This week, we’re digging into the television nominations for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards. We’re welcoming special guests to the podcast to do it. On the drama front, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association only recognized one returning series, surprisingly ignoring Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale. As predicted, Bodyguard, Homecoming, Killing Eve, and Pose all made big splashes with series and acting nominations.

On the Comedy front, the Globes continued their admiration for Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and finally recognized NBC’s The Good Place in its third season. In a bit of a surprise, they nominated Kidding and The Kominsky Method for Comedy series when both were thought to be just acting plays.

Finally, on the Limited Series side, Gianni Versace continued its march through awards season, with only the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards remaining. Versace received four nominations to lead the Limited Series categories. What else received nominations? Is this race really over already?

But first we take a very quick look at the film nominations. What films jumped out in front of the Oscar race with Golden Globe recognition?

This week, the Water Cooler gang takes a final look at the 2019 Golden Globe TV nominations. Plus, what do all the latest critics awards mean for the Fantasy Oscar race?

We’re completing our look at the 2019 Golden Globe TV nominations, which will be announced on Thursday. This week, we close things out with a review of the top Drama contenders. Will the international and hot new drama series Killing Eve steal The Handmaid’s crown? Or will Amazon’s late-year entry in Julia Roberts and Sam Esmail’s Homecoming dominate? And will the HFPA be the first major awards body to embrace FX’s groundbreaking Pose? Plus, is there actually a drama ingenue waiting in the wings this year? Finally, we’ll reveal our collective predictions for the major races. Look for our full predictions on Awards Daily later this week!

But first, a slew of critics groups struck first blood on the 2019 Oscar season. Who did the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle recognize? What does it mean for the Oscar race? What does it mean for the Fantasy Oscar race between Megan, Joey and Clarence? Find out on this week’s Water Cooler Podcast!

This week, Joey offers 1985’s cult classic Clue as his entry in Volume 6 of the Our Favorite Movies series. Plus, which limited series will the HFPA nominate at the 2019 Golden Globes?

Joey leads the podcast in our latest entry in the Our Favorite Movies series. His Volume 6 entry stems from a board game. Yup, Joey brings us 1985’s Clue. Directed by Jonathan Lynn, Clue features an all-star cast of comic actors portraying such iconic characters as Miss Scarlet and Colonel Mustard. Initially receiving mixed critical reviews and poor box office, Clue has grown to become something of a cult hit. We talk about why this is one of Joey’s favorite movies. Plus, why, after 30+ years, it has maintained such a cult following?

But first, we’re looking at the Golden Globes limited series race in advance of the 2019 Golden Globe nominations on December 6. This will be the Hollywood Foreign Press Associations only shot to reward Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning American Crime Story entry, The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Is there any scenario where Versace will match the five nominations given to OJ Simpson? Or will the HFPA jump at the chance to be the first major awards body to recognize HBO’s acclaimed summer entry Sharp Objects? And how will they react to Netflix’s Maniac? Will it become Netflix’s first limited series Golden Globe Emmy nominee?

This week, the Cooler Gang dives into the Golden Globes Comedy races and tries to figure out who this year’s unexpected Comedy Actress ingenue nominee will be. Or will there be one?

This week at the Water Cooler, we’re continuing our month-long coverage of the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, nominations to be announced on December 6. Today, we look at the Golden Globes Comedy series races. Will a yet-unseen new season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel dominate? Or will Chuck Lorre’s The Kominsky Method, starring the great Michael Douglas, dominate despite mixed reviews? But most importantly, who will be this year’s Golden Globes Comedy actress ingenue?

But first, Megan has better cell reception so she can properly dive into her experiences at the Napa Film Festival. Plus, it’s finally time for Clarence, Megan, and Joey to trade out their nonperforming Fantasy Oscar candidates. Finally, we pause to consider what we’re most thankful for this holiday season.

What else is lurking under the radar?
