Silicon Valley season three

The Silicon Valley season three trailer shows the Pied Piper gang struggling again to overcome the odds

There are two things in the Silicon Valley season three trailer that had me at generic rock music. First, Zach Woods in Pied Piper swag, a gaudy yellow concoction that naturally horrifies the rest of the crew. Second, T.J. Miller in a Pied Piper costume riding a stuffed unicorn.

Suddenly, April 24 can’t possible come any faster.

Zach Woods

When we last left the series, Pied Piper won its litigation against corporation Hooli. Raviga then snaps up the start-up and informs Richard (Thomas Middleditch) that they’re replacing him as CEO. Season three continues with Stephen Tobolowsky (Groundhog Day) joining in a recurring role as “Action” Jack Barker, the replacement CEO.

Silicon Valley premieres on HBO Sunday, April 24.

Kimmy Schmidt

Only recently has my three year-old daughter stopped randomly exclaiming “It’s a miracle!” When I first binge-watched (three times, I might add) the opening season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, I was desperately hoping for much more of the same. The brand new trailer for the second season of the quirky comedy offers just that. Jumping from faux pas here to self discovery there, our cheerful protagonist Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) continues to rebuild her long lost life in New York with the usual – also-socially-stranded – suspects, including Titus (Tituss Burgess), Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski), and Lillian (Carol Kane). Ellie Kemper looks like she is giving it her all once again, surrounded by a terrific cast, and I personally cannot wait to hang out with these misfits again.

The daughter will be delighted too.

You can stream season two of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix once it resurfaces on April 15.

Dammit!

Game of Thrones trailer

HBO has been riding this question of whether or not Jon Snow is actually dead. Granted, no one involved with the show would seriously spill the dirt. That didn’t stop the Internet from wildly speculating. So now comes the official season six Game of Thrones trailer.

And the verdict? Well, Jon Snow does indeed appear to be dead. But you know nothing, GOT viewer…

My personal favorite segment is the brief snip of what is rumored to be a reincarnated The Mountain supporting Cersei Lannister in her battle with the Sparrows.

“Order your man to step aside or there will be violence,” Lancel Lannister advises Cersei as The Mountain looms.

“I choose violence,” she confidently retorts.

Is it right to root for such an evil woman?

The remainder of the Game of Thrones trailer is naturally very dramatic and extremely visually appealing. Plus, the near-acoustic version of “Wicked Game,” while initially jarring, provides stellar audio accompaniment. It is performed by James Vincent McMorrow.

Game of Thrones returns April 24 on HBO.

Penny Dreadful Season Three

A new trailer is now available for Penny Dreadful Season Three

Showtime released artwork for Penny Dreadful season three. As shown below, the image shows a tormented figure forming a skull given the position of his arms on his head and his legs. It’s a very cool image even if it gives no real sense of the third season. It fondly reminds me of the great Silence of the Lambs poster. In that great art, the bodies of three women form the skull located on the death’s head moth. Both images are creepy, unsettling, and effectively evoke a sense of horror originating from the human body. Both Penny Dreadful and Silence played around with that concept significantly already.

Penny Dreadful season three will introduce Dr. Jekyll and, presumably, Mr. Hyde. That certainly plays into the human body/horror theme. A trailer is also now available (below).

The new season premieres May 1 on Showtime.

Elektra

After releasing a dramatic Punisher-heavy trailer earlier in the month, Netflix unveiled the back half of its epic 2-part Daredevil season two trailer. This section features Daredevil’s former love interest Elektra (Elodie Yung, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) who is equally adept at ass-kicking. Aside from Daredevil and Elektra’s meet-cute re-introduction, the trailer focuses on their difficult battle with The Hand, a group of “evil mystical ninjas” who are heavily involved in organized crime.

What strikes me as intriguing/worrisome about the two trailers is how completely different they are. Not in tone, of course. No, that’s all ass-kicking and despair. On the surface, it looks as if the Punisher and Elektra components of the second season don’t completely intersect. Here’s hoping the creative team is able to gracefully blend the two components into a cohesive whole. Between the Punisher, Elektra, Stick (Scott Glenn, returning), the Hand, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page, Daredevil’s got a whole lot going on in season two.

Daredevil‘s second season premieres on Netflix March 18.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Break open the pinot noir. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt returns April 15.

Those sneakers. Those pants. That confetti.

The teaser trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season two reminds us why we fell in love with Kimmy Schmidt in season one. There’s Peeno Noir/Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski), and the titular character, played by Ellie Kemper, strutting their stuff like they’re Senseless in the City. While there’s no actual content from the new season, the trailer reminds us of the immensely quotable dialogue. Dammit.

The comedy’s freshman season received seven Emmy nominations including a bid for Outstanding Comedy Series. Star Ellie Kemper was famously omitted from Comedy Actress but did recently receive a Screen Actor’s Guild nomination.

Pee-wee

Before we get into the trailer for Netflix’s Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, I want to briefly discuss how Paul Reubens (AKA Pee-wee’s real name) does NOT age. Look at that guy’s face! I was watching him when I was 8 years old, and he looked youthful then. He’s a staggering 63 years old!

It seems that Pee-wee has lived a rather solitary and quiet existence. He lives in a house much different from his famed Playhouse, so he begins questioning his choices when Joe Manganiello comes strolling into the diner where Pee-wee works. Scruffy hot Joe makes Pee-wee realize that he hasn’t really lived, and he sets off on an adventure to expand his horizons. Oh, and Manganiello proves that he should always mess around with beverages in public.

Joe

One of the best things about Pee-wee is his homegrown energy. You probably won’t find him playing with an iPad or fiddling with all types of technology, because his imagination and ingenuity have always been one the funnest aspects to watching him.

His voice might be a little deeper and his laugh a little less spry, but he seems down for whatever comes his way. It might be a hard sell for a lot of younger viewers, but he seems giddy to be back.

Daredevil

Netflix seems very excited about Daredevil‘s second season. The newly released second season trailer introduces not one but two legendary characters from the comic series. The trailer primarily features Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) as Frank Castle, a.k.a. the Punisher. Its general theme invokes the differences between our blind anti-hero (still trying to be the good Catholic boy) and Punisher (deadly vigilante). Just as we’re about to meet the other major character, Elektra (Elodie Yung, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), the trailer abruptly ends. The second half will debut online February 25.

Daredevil season one was nominated for three Creative Arts Emmy Awards. It also received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series. Bernthal’s Punisher is reportedly in the running for a series of his own. The character, however, will not be included in the planned Defenders series which combines the previously revealed Netflix Marvel characters of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Neither Luke Cage or Iron Fist’s individual series have received premiere dates.

Daredevil‘s second season premieres on Netflix March 18.

Three high-profile trailers dropped this week, potentially forecasting future Emmy glory

Veep

Last year’s Emmy winner for Best Comedy returns April 24. One notable change in its fifth season is the departure of original showrunner / creator Armando Iannucci. Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s David Mandel joined the series as its new showrunner.

This sneak preview shows Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Selina Meyers struggling with a positive presidential message in the face of an election night tie in the Electoral College.

Roots

The History Channel’s remake of Roots will premiere Monday, May 30. The 8-hour remake of the classic 1977 series stars Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Anna Paquin, Johathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Matthew Goode, Mekhi Phifer, and Tip “T.I.” Harris among others. The original Roots, based on the novel by Alex Haley, won nine Emmys. Original star LeVar Burton is co-producing the updated series.

Roadies

Almost Famous director Cameron Crowe makes his first foray into television with Roadies. Following a touring fictitious band, Roadies stars Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino, Imogen Poots, Keisha Castle-Hughes, and Luis Guzman. The new Showtime series will debut on June 26. The world hopes for a return to Almost greatness.

Flaked

Will Arnett (Arrested Development) returns to Netflix in Flaked, a new comedy premiering March 11 on the streaming service. Set in Venice, California, Flaked stars Arnett as Chip, a self-appointed guru, who falls for his best friend’s object of obsession, London (Ruth Kearney). Naturally, Arnett’s Chip is a hopeless liar. Comedy ensues.

Flaked was created and written by Arnett and Mark Chappell. Ben Silverman, Peter Principato and Mitch Hurwitz (Arrested Development) also serve as executive producers. Arnett has received five Emmy nominations, four for his guest work on NBC’s 30 Rock.

Take a look at the trailer below. The series premieres on March 11.
