This is Us trailer

Milo Ventimiglia nudity has driven views of the This is Us trailer to near-record heights

The This is Us trailer premiered last week, and, if trailer views amount to anything, then NBC may have a massive hit on its hands. The trailer notched over 17 million views in less than three days on Facebook. In a week on YouTube, there have been over 6 million views. To put it into perspective, the Facebook numbers smash the record set last year for TV trailers by The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow. Only Fox’s Prison Break reboot tops This is Us with 20 million Facebook views. That, though, is largely attributed to the baked-in fan base for the reboot.

Starring Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore, This is Us comes from the team of Dan Fogelman (Tangled, ABC’s Galavant) and the directing team of John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love). The plot is largely unknown at this point with NBC’s description referring to the way the character’s lives “intertwine in curious ways.” Apparently, they have the same birthdays. Like, omg. Megan and Joey should be on this show.

It is set to premiere this fall on NBC.

Mr. Robot Season Two

Mr. Robot season two is upon us. The heavily Emmy-buzzed drama might help the USA Network break out of the awards jail it’s been in for years. After recognition from multiple guilds, Mr. Robot season two appears to amp up the action after the thrilling season one finale. Rami Malek (a surefire Emmy nominee for Best Actor) returns as Elliot Alderson along with the hactivist collective.

You have plenty of time to binge right now. Mr. Robot season two arrives July 13.

OITNB season four

The trailer for Orange is the New Black season four dropped today, offering very few concrete details about the plot of this season (all we know is that there’s an influx of inmates) but a whole lot of new faces and one-liners. Season four returns just as Emmy ballots are out for season three.

Lots of favorite recurring characters aren’t in the trailer. Alex (Laura Prepon) is notably missing, even if her voice can be heard. Other MIA actresses include Natasha Lyonne and Ruby Rose. Even Taryn Manning (who’s had some personal troubles in the news) doesn’t have much to do in the trailer, except utter this cryptic line: “Do you know the difference between pain and suffering? Pain is always there but suffering is a choice.”

Overall, the show looks like it’s getting back to its dark and gritty self, as opposed to the season three spiritual one.

OITNB season four drops on Netflix June 17.

Roots Limited Series

History’s Roots limited series premieres Memorial Day

History has released a new teaser trailer for its Roots limited series, a remake of the seminal 1977 miniseries. The original series received an astounding 37 Emmy nominations for which it is the current record holder. It received nine awards, topped recently by HBO’s John Adams.

The 2016 variation on Roots stars Malachi Kirby as Kunta Kinte, an African man sold into slavery. The limited series also stars Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Johnathan Rhys Meyers, Anika Noni Rose, Anna Paquin, and Emayatzy Corinealdi among others. Airing in 2-hour sprints over four nights, Roots is directed by Bruce Beresford, Thomas Carter, Phillip Noyce, and Mario Van Peebles.

Given the pedigree of the cast and behind the scenes talent, it would be foolish to ignore such a massive and potentially powerful event. However, not only does History’s Roots remake have to be better than the original miniseries that for years dominated the genre, but it also has to be better than the similarly themed (and Oscar-winning) 12 Years a Slave. That doesn’t mean there isn’t enough room for multiple takes on the subject matter, clearly. But it does sort of demand that the remake produce a unique take on the limited series. Particularly when the competition includes The People v. O.J. SimpsonFargo, and American Crime – all of which have played with the limited series genre in one way or another.

The 2016 Roots limited series will premiere Memorial Day, May 30.

Here is the new teaser trailer. The original trailer is included after.

Netflix's Lady Dynamite

Netflix’s Lady Dynamite may be your next obsession… Or a complete train wreck.

If you endured Netflix’s fourth season to Arrested Development, then you’re familiar with comic Maria Bamford. Her take on DeBrie Bardeaux, a methadone addict mistaken by David Cross’s Tobias Funke as a method actress, is the kind of equally bonkers and inspired comic acting you don’t often see in mainstream comedy. The streaming giant has seen fit to grant Bamford her own fully deserved series. Judging from Netflix’s Lady Dynamite trailer, we can anticipate a wild tour-de-force.

Created by Arrested Development‘s Mitch Hurwitz, Netflix’s Lady Dynamite is billed as an eccentric, absurdist take on Bamford’s personal life in the guise of a mockumentary. No doubt there’s truth mixed in with the lunacy, but Bamford appears to anchor it all with her skewed outlook on life. Is this the kind of performance that could give Bamford some long-overdue awards attention? Maybe even an Emmy nomination for Comedy Actress, taking Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback spot? It’s a different style of comedy, of course, but there are slots available for sure.

Netflix’s Lady Dynamite stars Bamford and Fred Melamed as her manager, Bruce Ben-Bacharach. The series will feature a rotating coterie of guest stars including Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, Adam Pally, Patton Oswalt, Ana Gasteyer, Jenny Slate, Mira Sorvino, Brandon Routh, Dean Cain, and Jon Cryer.

Netflix’s Lady Dynamite debuts May 20.

Game of Thrones trailer

“That is what I do. I drink, and I know things,” says Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in the new (and hopefully final) Game of Thrones trailer for season six. All these Game of Thrones trailers are leading me to drink, that’s what I know.

As heavily rumored, this season appears heavy on action, which should please those that quibbled with season five’s scattered focus. The trailer effectively underscores that most of our cast of characters are engaging in pithy battles between each other as the real threat (the dead) marches toward the wall.

Game of Thrones season six begins on HBO April 24 at 9pm ET.

Bloodline

Netflix releases a full trailer giving us a window into Bloodline season two

Bloodline was far from a perfect show. Its tone and pacing ebbed and flowed as much as the Key West tide of its central locale. But it finished strong as Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek, Linda Cardellini, and Norbert Leo Butz turned in great work. And as soon as it was over I didn’t want to spend another single minute with this darkly twisted family.

Apparently, no one at Netflix listened to my inner cries. Bloodline season two will debut on Netflix at the end of May. Judging from the new trailer, the season seems to be something of a companion piece, working to flesh out the original story rather than striking out anew. The Rayburn siblings continue to struggle with their season one-ending actions as their mother (Spacek) wrestles with being kept in the dark.

It’s probably a good sign that season two will be only 10 episodes as season one felt a little padded to reach the initial 13-episode season. Here’s hoping the writers have enough material to fill the 10 episode order.

Bloodline season two streams on Netflix May 27.

Grace and Frankie

Netflix’s own golden girls are back this summer in Grace and Frankie

A full trailer has dropped for the second season of Grace and Frankie. It looks as if the sophomore outing is playing it very light. Or maybe that’s how the trailer has been cut? It’s suggested that Frankie (Emmy nominee Lily Tomlin) and her former husband, Sol (Sam Waterston) deal with their recent indiscretion (much to the dismay of their children), but Martin Sheen’s Robert doesn’t comment on it in this sneak peek. What we do get is a lot of Jane Fonda reaching for a vodka bottle, and Tomlin’s willingness to talk about anything. Even recommending vibrators.

Grace Grace2

While the first season depended a lot on Grace’s prickliness and Frankie’s airy attitude, the season season feels lighter and more like a buddy comedy. Are they going for more belly laughs in this season. Is this The Odd Couple reformed? Take a look at how different the posters are for the first and second season:

Every episode of the second season of Grace and Frankie will be available on Netflix on May 6th.

Kimmier

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s second season final trailer makes the world a ‘Kimmier’ place

There’s something to be said about the 89 trailers it apparently requires to introduce new content. Netflix is The Worst about this requirement of the modern TV era, having introduced 4 or 5 (I lost count) trailers for Daredevil season two. Here, they finally introduce a “final” trailer for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, imploring all of us to make our world a Kimmier place.

Funny thing, it doesn’t really show any actual content from season two.

Now, you can take that one of two ways. The cynic in you will say it’s because season two really sucks. But let’s put that person in a doomsday shelter, shall we? Instead, let’s embrace our inner optimists and proclaim that Netflix is keeping all the jokes for the full reveal.

What we’re left with is a sunny dance number where Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) turns a grey world into bright pastels shimmy by shimmy. Tituss Burgess (shrieking “pinot noir”) and Jane Krakowski drop by to remind you they’re in the show too.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt returns to Netflix April 15.
