The Real Scream?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, MTV will launch a 10-episode reboot of the Scream franchise starting October 2015. The series will be executive produced by Harvey and Bob Weinstein and director Wes Craven.

Clearly, MTV is following in the footsteps of Ryan Murphy’s phenomenally successful American Horror Story franchise that recently premiered its fourth season to the highest ratings in FX’s 20-year history. There is no word if the Scream series will be an anthology or a continuation from year to year.

Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of the three of the four Scream films, will not be involved. Neither, apparently, will the iconic Ghostface character that launched the series and thousands of Halloween costumes.

However, the last entry in the film series, Scream 4, felt extremely tired and uninspired, earning a series low of just under $40 million at the U.S. box office. The series would perhaps benefit from a new story and (ahem) new blood.

Let’s hope MTV didn’t use all their creativity with the official series announcement: they tweeted a series of emoji simulating a murder and a phone number. Curious callers heard a male voice, more reminiscent of the Saw films, asking, “Do you like scary TV?
