The full gang is back at the Water Cooler this week, and we’re talking about the 2020 Emmy race. The Limited Series categories are traditionally our favorite races. However, the first half of the 2020 Emmy season provided only a few truly strong contenders, led by Netflix’s Unbelievable. So, what awards possibilities do we have in the 2020 limited series? Reigning champ HBO has three high profile series starring the likes of Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant, Mark Ruffalo, and Winona Ryder. Will one of their titles defend the crown? What about FX’s Mrs. America and presumed Lead Actress front runner Cate Blancett? And what of Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere? We preview the major 2020 limited series as we look forward to the 2020 Emmy race.
But first, Joey gives us the final tally for the 2020 Fantasy Oscar race. Clarence and Joey were running close but did Parasite‘s historic Best Picture win put him over the top? Or did Clarence’s acting wins from Renee Zellweger and Laura Dern keep him in the lead?
Plus, we have a special announcement about our 2020 Most Iconic Directors series, focusing on acclaimed director Pedro Almodovar.
We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

Ok you know eveyone, given i been part of awardsdaily.com for well pretty much since its original inception nearly 20 yrs ago..at long last it time i start to write here to commit energy the respect that the online streaming TV ONLY part of online streaming- that indeed it well past time (by about 6 years about on my watch since tv series started begin big past time for lot of you online)..and i can see now more than ever how whilst whatever misgivings me and silent majoprity have about the questionable legitamacy of otherwise small screen streaming movies competing in oscar season – there no doubting no mistaking the appeal of online tv series absolutely kicking traditional broadscast tv series into the sunest and as far up the bloody arse as well..one persons boot can go:
Inm short..i will be focusing my energy from now on at start of second decade this point forward to some truly magnificent, bold, intuitive, inspiring and thought provoking and downright hilarious online tv streaming series and not just focus on movies..
‘
I admit i was ignorant to mass appeal of online streaming tv series.
And i admit i never heard of “The Marvellous ms. Maisel. And it is most amusing original and inventive all in one and witty and charming and sassy tv series i have EVER seen..and it has heart at its centre without going overboard taking things too seriously..i become an avid fan and yet i only seen part of season 1- who here loves and adores mrs. Maisel? i must say i have a crush on her buit who doesn’t and she stunning actress but boy Rachel Borshanan has huge bright future in acting beyond this and she is just stunningly sexy hot full stop- cmon i can say that ok i did given no choice break up with my partner recently i am newly single- but regardless i still think even if i were with someone that Mrs. Borshanan is damn hot and in her role as ‘midge’ she is on fire!
But of course there are other tv series that have really blown me away..I always been a Tom Clancy Fan and well what dream come true to see such detailed, intricate, commited storylines of one event evolving through entire series- it first time ANY espionage adventure/ drama series has commited an entire tv season on one story line as we witness plots twists and turns and the do- or-die high stakes..strategy, lack of choices and John Kasinski is superb series eahc episode plays like a mini- movie featuree- THAT how brilliant this original tom clancy series is and it true to spirit of the books.
Then you have ” The Man in High Castle” easily the most provocative and bold and ambitious , dark and grim and compelling tv series i have EVER seen. I left speechless in a time that anti-semitism sadly is on the rise the confidence and self belief and CARE and seriousness with which this alternate- present day- what if nazi’s conquered all sahring power with japanese superpower’- type story has been handled to NOT present the series as ever showing sympathy to idea of fascism and it poisonous disease in society- and shows full throttle rightfully so no hold barred mercilous precision that real nazis once showed- and yet as a 3rd generation Holocaust survivor- my late grandparents survived the worst of Auschwitz b”H in both concentration and death camps- under similar brutal unforgiving rule, and yet i always wondered am not surprised the boundless endless curiosity and creativity of hollywood that when they get the right producers (ala the genius one and only Ridley Scott) and right writers you know hollywood know they in safe, responsible , respectable hands. Scot does not let his vision get out of hand to extremes- when there is moment of violence he rightfully shows what alternate- hypothetical but in his series ‘real’ nazi drones capable of…but he does it respectful of history by not shying away from true evil nature of nazism.
He dares to humanize some central nazi command characters even taking us into his house- but you do so knowing he has betrayed his country his values sold himself out- and yet he still carries our brutal tactics and oversees by his very involvement in this US conquered- Fascist neo- nazi state- a terrifying vision indeed and hence why it absolutely Scott was entitle to show in its stunning cinematography and throughtful sert design what Fascist US would look like- much like pre- WWII Europe- he realized- Scot has shown me that right hollywood personel and no less simply astonishing acting and cast and precision writing- just how Hollywood have a right in these right circumstances to explore whatever theme and idea and vision the fuk they want- and do it while reminding people that frankly the Nazis and their propaganda machine even in this alternate vision that they every bit as evil (almost let remember as is rightfully portrayed in this unforgettable series), that indeed many of nazi commanders are serving and eerily looking weary and old Hitlerin Germany and hence American blood still exists in the nazi ranks- it propaganda and idea of power and influence and threat it poses to central characters THAT the essence and heart of The Man in High Castle.
And ultimately it is these 3 television series i shamefully been late convert to to online tv strreaming i be watching with intense interest.
Hats off to all you who who give creators reason to renew these masterpiece tv series online and hence why they still being renewed for timebeing in near medium term.
Hollywood deserves some credit, so do actors and castr and crew and producers but you ALL make or break success of tv series now if only hollywood at awards season for movies would show same precise judgement that they have at golden globes and emmys for tv series since the game of thrones era began that woulfd be simply magnificant wouldn’t it?
This is somewhat off-topic, but I just wanted to say how much love Homeland and Succession. I just got a few free months of Showtime—what should I check out? I’m already an avid fan of Homeland, Ray Donovan (which got canceled), and Billions.
Also, I still can’t believe my local library still doesn’t have Parasite. I can watch it on On Demand and will sometime, but I’m cheap. 🙂
I started watching Succession, is that a limied series? I like the series except for one thing: TOO many F*K words. That word is thrown around like candy. It reminds me why I grew tired of Deadwood….too many orgies….so Sucession writes, if you read this blog, please clean up the language.
It’s a drama series. The second season premiered last summer.
If you haven’t watched The Outsiders on HBO, do it now! It’s okay – I’ll wait here. Ben Mendelson and Cynthia Erivo are locks for Emmy noms for sure
I loved Ben M. in what I’ve seen. I really need to finish the series. You’ve inspired me!

Erivo is phenomenal in that
I just continue to be super impressed by the fact that Reese Witherspoon qualifies for 6 Emmy nominations next season (3 for acting and 3 for producing) while Nicole Kidman qualifies for 4 (2 for acting and 2 for producing). Latter actually could score all 4 !
It’s amazing. I do think Nicole is on track for all for right now. She may miss out on Big Little Lies though.
Yes, Drama Actress is a bloodbath this season, let’s face it the 6 slots could be easily filled with 3 shows alone (Big Little Lies, Killing Eve, The Morning Show) and that still leaves The Crown’s Olivia Colman and the farewell tours of previous winners, Claire Danes and Viola Davis.
