Cineleet has compiled a list of directors-in-cameos they’re calling “Don’t Quit Your Day Job.” The best ones, obviously, are those where the director of the film has injected himself, as Hitchcock famously did in all of his scenes – later copied by Coppola and Scorsese. Actually, Scorsese has made a point to appear to in almost all of his films, especially the early ones. This Taxi Driver scene is legendary, showing a tightly wound, too-cleanly put together husband losing his composure. It’s contrasted nicely with the clip above, which is Scorsese appearing in Kurasawa’s Dreams as Van Gogh. Scorsese also had a nice part in Robert Redford’s Quiz Show, which may be my favorite performance of his.
