ok, this trailer is insane, so we’ll have to trust the opinions of those who’ve seen the movie in Venice, and try to ignore the maniacal promo song that turns it into ‘Barney on the Ledge without Ritalin.’
“the film is a visual treat. Shapes shift, objects and characters assume new forms; breathtakingly, Ponyo’s goldfish sisters become crashing, fish-shaped waves. The draughtsmanship is jaw-dropping, and Miyzaki’s ability to express extremes of emotion in his child characters without resorting to sentimentality or treacly music is remarkable.” (Telegraph, UK)
“All of Miyazaki‚Äôs films have their own blithe disregard for narrative logic, but Ponyo is as chaotic and exuberant as a story told by a hyperactive toddler who has just been mainlining Fruit Shoots. (The Times, UK)
“Ponyo is firing on all cylinders on every level. From the sheer creativity of its traditional cel animation to its characterisations (every adult here feels real); the interactions between old and young; the untrammelled imagination on display throughout the story; and, above all, the way Miyazaki still dares to be different.” (Screen Daily)
LOL! That trailer is just… I don’t know. It gave me no inkling of what the plot could be about.
But its awesome to hear great reviews. There’s something about all anime that makes me dislike it. All anime, that is, except Miyazaki’s movies. Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke are three of the greatest animated movies in history.

Maybe it’s the years spent with the Anime Industry but I would nothing even remotely peculiar in the trailer.
Miyazaki is easily my favourite living director: Spirited Away is my favourite film. I’m so so so so so ecstatic to hear these awesome reviews YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Barney on the Ledge Without Ritalin LMAO

can’t wait!
The (multiple) trailers for Howl’s Moving Castle were equally mad..
After enjoying the film on dvd, I was able to enjoy a whole different level of fascination on the special features watching the many many mad mad trailers for the film I had just seen. Not one of them inducing me to want to see the film, had I not just done so. They don’t even accrately reflect the story, at all, nevermind the feel or mood of it.
But the plus was I was treated to different snippets of Howl’s great score on repeat.
Asian marketing.. its something else. & I mean that in the nicest way possible.
