Brad Brevet at Rope of Silicon lists the six creepiest/spookiest movies he’s ever seen. It’s a fine seelction of genuinely squirm-inducing cinema. Brad stops at six titles — demanding that they stand up to multiple viewings and citing the highly subjective nature of horror for keeping his list short:
- Them (Ils) – 2006
- The Orphanage (El Orfanato) – 2007
- The Ring (Ringu) – 1998
- The Descent -2006
- Jaws – 1975
- The Exorcist – 1973
I like the inclusion of foreign directors and the appreciation for recent titles. To those I’d add John Carpenter’s The Thing (yikes!), Adrian Lyne’s Jacob’s Ladder (brrr!), and [Rec] (holy shit!) co-directed by Jaume Balaguer√≥ and Paco Plaza (remade this year as Quarantine). While not strictly a horror film, South Korean nail-biter, The Chaser (Chugyeogja) directed by Hong-jin Na is the most intense thriller I’ve seen in years. For me tension and suspense always trump shock and gore. (The Saw series? Sawry, no thanks.)¬†
