It feels weird on election eve, when Prop 8 is on the ballot tomorrow, to talk about homophobia in America but there it is. Last week on Grey’s Anatomy, and the week before, the show had gone to lesbian town in a big way, probably bigger than any other prime time dramedy has. They were talking euphemistically about girl on girl stuff. I thought, this is weird. This isn’t going to turn out well. An alarm went off that made me think someone somewhere was going to freak out. And it all seemed a little too abrupt, a ratings grab. Now, Brooke Smith, who plays Dr. Erica Hahn, has been fired suddenly and with very little explanation. The suits wanted her gone. It’s reminiscent of that scene in Quiz Show when Martin Scorsese makes a phone call to have their chump swapped out. Smith will bounce back from the shock:
How are you doing with all this?
It’s actually never happened to me before. I never had a moment where I thought I did something wrong. I was just really surprised. I just moved my entire family to L.A., so it was kind of like, “What?” But for some reason I feel like I’m fine. I feel like I’m going to be okay.
