Let’s get the party started this year with an FYC thread for Best Actor. Whom do you most want to be recognized either this upcoming Oscar season, or in the first half of the year that’s already wrapped.¬† For me, right now, there are two. Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker and Matt Damon in The Informant! For Matt Damon, it’s probably the best performance in a long, solid career. For Renner, I fear that his lack of star power and the early entry of Hurt Locker into the race could deny him a nod – this would be a mistake of epic proportions, sure to be muttered about for years on end. These things have a way of slipping through the cracks and there can be no greater frustration for an Oscar watcher. The Informant! will open soon and, like Up in the Air, it will be one of the more timely films, sitting nicely beside Capitalism: A Love Story. The theme for the male characters this year: the Nowhere Men. They slip into a void and look great while doing so. Well, besides Matt Damon of course.
