I’ve had my own endorsement in draft for a few days now, and the quote from Stephen King gives me confidence to post it:
In spite of the scorn before its release, I believe Let Me In is the best American horror movie of the past 25 years. And it’s the most seriously sinister vampire movie since Katherine Bigelow’s Near Dark in 1987.
I don’t know what 20-year-old horror film Mr King uses as his reference point for a cut-off date, but I’m going all the way back to 1982 and The Thing to measure my longer 25-year span. (Sasha tells me I need to see Evil Dead II, so maybe 23 years is a number we’ll agree on.) I said Let Me In is the best horror film in 25 years during the phone call for last week’s podcast, but I think that part got trimmed out in editing.
The point is, I’ve been telling anybody who’ll listen for days. If you miss Let Me In you’ll be letting a chance slip by to let Hollywood know torture-porn isn’t the only horror that sells tickets. Let Me In had a very disappointing opening weekend. You guys have another chance to vote at the box-office weekend. Please don’t blow the opportunity. Let Me In will show up on Top 10 Lists at the end of the year, and you’ll be regretting the money you spent on _________ instead.
I have to say that for the past couple of hours i have been hooked by the amazing articles on this blog. Keep up the great work.
I agree utterly with both statements. Let Me In is a very deep and emotionally powerful film, although I would add that as such, it qualifies as more than a horror film. Its’intent seems to me to inspire far more than terror/horror in the watcher, it also causes pity, a contrast of hope and desperation for the main characters and a number of other more complex emotions that render the film mesmerizing. This film contrasting romance with horror, cuteness with danger and pity with elation is therefore very hard to define and must absolutely be watched.
I am both at a loss to understand why it has been so badly received by the public and compared to the previous Let The Right One In, and to accept just how little this type of film has been considered or produced, especially on the potentially endless psychological matter that is vampires. I personally believe that this work of art is unique, and that the use of children as main characters is a master stroke (particularly considering the two main actors who are perfect for their role).
I am in fact very sad that there are no other films like this one, which has affected me so much. I would love to see similar films, or even better, a continuation of this one, as it ends with an open mind for the future. Of course, I write this keeping in mind that a sequel of such a film can be risky as it might turn out badly, leaving the first one to “rot”…
I might also add that the first film Let The Right One In is also a great film, but contrary to what I have read on the web, I prefer the remake as I find the atmosphere darker, the emotions clearer and more realistic, and the contrasting dark side of Abby/Eli deeper and more complex.
